Best Director? I’ve enjoyed much of Robert Eggers’ work, but there seems to be a huge lack of direction in this movie, especially when it comes to the actors’ performances. Much of this movie feels like it was second unit-directed, or- even worse- all first takes. The performances are lacking the touch of the visionary behind the entire project. Lily Rose Depp’s performance, for the most part, feels as if she said “let me try something real quick” before the cameras rolled, and that’s the one they used. Nicholas Hoult, who is normally a fantastic actor, seems like he was given only one note by Eggers in rehearsals- act bewildered- and never saw the director again. Aaron Taylor Johnson’s performance feels like he wasn’t given any direction whatsoever and just made it up as he went along. It’s seriously the worst performance in the movie. The only person that turned in a good performance is- surprise, surprise- Willem Dafoe. It’s as if he read the script (which is horrendous, by the way) and said, “screw it, I’ll ham this up.” He leaned into the cartoonish aspect for his character because it was the only way to sell such crappy dialogue.

Hey great video 🙏🏻 as a Romanian, I just wanted to point out some things, I don’t know if anyone else noted this but here it goes. In the scene where Thomas encounters the village, just the people that dance and sing are gypsies. The man that invites him in is romanian (the version at that time) and he is speaking Romanian, including all the people in the inn and at the monastery, they are not gypsies. Also, it really took me out of the movie when Orlok crossed some kind of sea while going to Germany, which is non sensical? The only water that connects Transylvania and Germany is the Danube River and that looked a bit too stormy to be a river so that’s weird.

Even reading the book I was glad I don’t know enough about geography to tell if it was accurate, the chase at the end when they took 3 different routes to the castle made me want to see if all 3 of those routes would even have existed 😅 Still not as egregious as James Fenimore Cooper 😂

As a Transylvanian, I appreciated the look of the countryside but I couldn't help wonder how and why Count Orlok took a boat to Germany. Great work as per usual, Heavy (he’s my brother!) I felt by the end he wanted to die - each had there own indulgence but in the end, it couldn’t go on forever. The Beauty of her and the sunlight was too much to pass up. So he looked again, knowing this would break the curse. Obviously Depp’s character wanted to stop her lustrous visions by giving in to her destruction, but also vanquishing her lifelong obsession/foe to save the real one she loved but not craved. It worked out for both of them. Just a theory/interpretation.

20:40 I like to think the count was driving the buggy in this movie too but not in person, by controlling the wolves chasing the horses where he wants the buggy to go. To pick up, and then to bring to the castle using the wolves to direct the horses by chase, the way dogs herd sheep.

A subject nobody ever covers when it comes to Dracula, is how he is canonically a wizard first and vampire second. Dracula is a Solomonar. The Solomonari are a type of weather wizard in Romanian mythology and they also ride dragons. Sound of the Dragon Dracula.. Get it? Robert Eggers Nosferatu is the first movie that shows Count Orlok having power over lesser demons to possess others. They even refer to him as a solomonar in the movie when the Romanian nuns are healing Thomas Hutter.

there are also some connections with frankenstein, the novel and some film adaptations: 1: the novel: the fact that von franz is changed from dutch as van helsing was to swiss, is a reference, as well as mentioning paracelsus and cornelius agrippa, alchemists that were mentioned by victor frankenstein. when orlok tells ellen ÿou have three nights"this reminded e of the promise made by the creature to victor frankenstein that he would harm his loved ones unless he creates a mate for him. 2: the films: 1: the restraining device that knock is tied to resembles the one used in "bride of frankenstein". prof. von franz resembles to a large extent, doctor waldmann the groundbreaking mentor of victor frankenstein in the brannagh version, portrayed by john cleese. orlok himself resembles to a certain extent de nero's appearance in the brannagh adaptation although the connection to vlad tepes's appearance is there. 3. overall, the frankenstein connection makes sense in the context of 1838 and german romanticism, since the vampire genre was born on literally the same night that frankenstein was concieved. sadly murnau didn't adapt frankenstein...

So for other potential symbolic significance of the shadow of the cross on Albin’s cheek I’ve got some thoughts. It could represent his complicated position in Ellen's sacrifice and tie in to themes of moral ambiguity. Since even though he was fighting evil, he essentially guided a young woman to her death. So I agree with your belief that the mark might suggest divine judgment. it can also convey his own guilt in using Ellen as a weapon against Nosferatu and how he could be seen as complicit in her death. Furthermore suggesting that he bears the weight of being the knowledgeable guide who led Ellen to her sacrificial decision. Like a priest hearing confession, he carried the burden of knowing her fate beforehand. Therefore, the shadow could represent his role as a guardian of dangerous knowledge about vampires. It can also speak to the duality of the sacred and profane. Like the vampire hunters in Gothic literature, he straddles the line between the sacred (fighting evil) and the profane (using death to achieve it). That’s why the mirror itself is also significant, conveying self-reflection and the facing of one's own moral choices- which one can argue he avoids since he’s looking out the window at the world he just helped save instead of facing his own reflection introspectively. Contrasting the previous interpretation, the cross can even be taken as a visible sign of the cost of defeating evil. Though they succeeded, the victory came at a terrible price. So it might suggest that he probably will carry this event with him, literally marked by it. Lastly, another interpretation that comes to mind could be the fact that her death has sanctified those who remain. Playing to the idea of Ellen as a christ-like figure. Also similar to how priests are marked by their contact with the divine, he is marked by his proximity to Ellen's Christ-like sacrifice. In general I think everyone can arrive at their own interpretations with their individual impressions of it. The same goes for all the symbols throughout the film since Nosferatu itself could convey a plethora of meanings such as western fears of The Other, substance abuse, toxic relationships, mental illnesses, death drive, repression, sexuality, queer identity, shadow archetypes etc and that’s the beauty and strength of such an impactful source material. Anyhow that was my two cents as an English Literature MA. 🙂

If it was hidden by thick clouds then the body of them would have illumination not the tops. Swing and a miss on the shot in the daylight theory. Unless, of course, it was actually shot in the daylight and you were right all along. If that's the case, i apologize.

[27:19] love this channel. long time watcher, but the wound on his chest is on the right side (at least in the pic you chose). The heart is on the left side for vampire feeding. lol
