I remember hearing mention of this game, though I never got a chance to play it, myself. I don't mind the monochrome, and appreciate the amount of detail, but it seems likely that the slowdown is due to a rough conversion from another format (Spectrum, perhaps?) without much accounting for the Commodore's particular strengths, which is a bit of a pity.
@CheekyCommodoreGamer26 күн бұрын
It was a little like the game, 'Night Shade'... another superb isometric game which suffered heavily with slowdown due to it being a port from an 'inferior' machine 😇🕹️👌

I've not seen this game before... it reminds me of so many of those games that had that isometric perspective... some of them were hard to control, as I remember. :) This looks like a fun one, though. I think I'll have to fire up VICE... :) I have a recapped refurbed C64 but no desk space (at the moment) to hook it up. When it was, having it s-video going through to my 2k monitor via a retroTINK was the bomb! I recommend it. :) Nothing beats M.U.L.E. on a 32" display in all its crisp glory. Beats the pants off my 13" TV I used back in the 80's. ($15 at a second-hand TV repair shop.)

AAAAAAAARGH 😹!!!! I saw this Werner Herzog movie tie-in for the Commodore 64 as a tape version (loose) once at a finnish 🇫🇮 website back in the early 2010's. I was going to buy it, but... SOMEONE ALREADY BOUGHT IT 😹! After that, i have never heard of that game... until i saw this video. That game is so rare, i can't even find it from a single retro game store not flea market. If i ever see this game for the Commodore 64 on a tape or a disk, i'm gonna make sure, i will buy it immediately 😹😺👍🕹️. The gameplay may seem slow, but i could give a try. And Klaus Kinski is a legendary actor. NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE is absolutely a legendary classic movie of 1979. Thank you 😸😺👍🕹️.

Luckily, pressing 4 on the menu screen will give you the objectives and instructions - I never hardly read game inlays until long after playing the games (as I was very impatient!) but somehow, with perseverance, we'd figure it out one way or another. However... with this game, you definitely do need to know where you are going 😇🕹️👌

@@CheekyCommodoreGamer I was the opposite, if I had an original copy of a game, I'd read the manual from cover to cover before trying the game. However, since the majority of my games were pirated, I didn't have the manuals for most of them. Sometimes people would post the keys that a more complex game used, on a BBS, or maybe a text file version of the manual. There used to be an Apple oriented BBS in my local calling area (in the US, phone companies used to charge by the minute if you called a phone number that wasn't "local"), and they had a copy of the manual for Elite online. I forget the details, but for whatever reason, I could view it, but I wasn't able to directly download it. So, I "buffered" it, saving the terminal program's buffer to disk each time it filled up. At 300 baud. With no error correction. I think I ended up with four files, which were full of garbled spots that I painstakingly corrected in a C64 word processor (probably Speedscript). On the Amiga, all the cracked copies of Archipelagos were broken, then I met someone with an original copy. I copied the disk and borrowed the manual. At first I was just going to type in the code pages (black print on maroon paper, hundreds of codes), but I ended up typing in a copy of the entire manual, which I then uploaded to local Amiga BBSs.

@@CheekyCommodoreGamer I forgot to mention that I had one game I bought, and I STILL couldn't figure out how to play it: Alien. I've seen scans of the UK/European release and it looks like it comes with a complete manual. We didn't get that here in the US. The game was on disk, but it was a "budget" release, which meant that it was in a thin, plastic clamshell package, just thick enough to hold the disk and maybe a single printed sheet, I found it hanging on a revolving rack of software in a supermarket for just a few dollars. One of the other games I bought was a chess game that used PETSCII graphics to draw the pieces, and I could never tell the black pieces from the white pieces! Anyway, I honestly don't remember what kind of instructions came with it, but I do remember that whatever they were, it wasn't enough for me to understand how to play the game. On the other hand, I also bought Space: The Ultimate Frontier, which was an upgraded, but unlicensed version of Star Trek. That came with complete instructions on the disk.

It's oddly specific for a video game adaptation of a film. I wonder how other films by Werner Herzog would translate : Aguirre would be some kind of endless adventure on a raft with the occasional amerindian attacks… and in Gasherbrum, you would have to clim up a mountain range without having your brother killed.

I played this for about 10mins as a kid. So boring. However, it looks like a game that improves if you persist with patience. And a speed-up option in an emulator.
@CheekyCommodoreGamer25 күн бұрын
True enough, these games will look and feel mega slow now... you could increase the speed 20% I guess with an emulator though if it feels 'off' but that will just garble the music haha 😇🕹️👌

One of the C64's games that impressed me highly - because of visuals and melancholic, lonely atmosphere. I love Stoker's "Dracula", Werner Herzog, Isabelle Adjani. I also love old black and white movies, and silent movies also. Thus, I love seeing well done monochrome hires games on C64, unlike many other C64 gamers. Sure, it's like ZX Spectrum, so what? Instead of being happy for owning computer that was capable of doing its own PLUS ZX things, people scorned for no real reason. Hires visuals, 2.5D, have undeniable charm and class. And good coders were able to speed it up on C64 using hardware sprites in multiplex. And sure, there were some lame ports from ZX, not doing C64 justice. We needed more of this stuff, also spreading on more parts in multiload, giving scope and/or details to the game world. Last Ninja did it with the bang, truly epic, but it's not exactly based on the hires engine with set of assets like all those isometric old school games. However, Last Ninja did rely on large numer of parts - 3 games, 6 loads each. Many "episodes" to enjoy. Just imagine having that with classic 2.5D games. Bigger and detailed, much much more.

I vont to suck yer blot! Not really but you make a great case for this slow burner of a game! I do believe Zzap! liked it in it's day too but it is indeed an acquired taste (just like... nah!). Certainly one of the better isometric arcade adventure puzzle games for the C64. Save states do, ehm, save it I guess, because few people would have the patience and perseverance to complete this in a single sitting. Nosferatu 1979 was cool but I like the original more, which is now over a hundred years old! They even made a movie about the creepy actor who played the original count: Shadow of the Vampire from 2000...

Looks interesting. Thank goodness for trainers and other cheats though, eh? Isometric games are harder to do than people realize, because you have to draw things in the right order (from back to front) so that they appear correctly in the 'Z' plane. This is why, I suspect, the game slows down so much when there are a lot of things on the screen at the same time: That's a lot to ask of a 1mhz processor!
@CheekyCommodoreGamer26 күн бұрын
I agree with you there, without trainers I'd probably not be able to cover half these games as my skill-set has waned over the years! Haha I wish I could have recorded the footage of games from when I was a kid and had 10x better reflexes, especially on the playform types. Good game this, shame about the slowdown in places... but I could overlook that 😇🕹️👌
