Unfortunately, Russia hasn’t recovered…. As decent people died in the red terror, the descendants of the Reds have remained in power ever since. I read a lot of memoirs in Russian about the methods of the Cheka-NKVD, and what is happening inside Russia now is their methods directed against their own citizens. Yes, the West is Russophobic, but then why is there repression against its own citizens inside the Russia?

these photographs are absolutely stunning in beauty, richness of colors, clarity and the characters seem as if they are real and present to this day. It is so heartbreaking to see so much beauty of the russian aristocracy that would later be destroyed after the revolution. One can feel why the russian classical music and arts are always so moving and heartfelt, when you look at these people and how they were dressed, how they were holding their stature, how proud they were to be part of Russia. I completely agree, I have a long-standing interest in/ love for Russian literature music, arts, politics and history too. Such a unique country and culture in many ways...While the 1917 revolution made a sharp break with "Old Russia" and millions of people were to be gravely abused, it should be added though that the Soviet Union also did much to promote classic Russian literature and music and bring this heritage to new and vastly wider audiences, both in their own country but also abroad. 16:28 Chekhov knew at this point that he was mortally ill, he only had a yer left to live. :(

Imperial Russia was a society with any number of injustices and inequities; but these pictures make it crystal-clear that it was an incomparably more HUMAN society than the steel-cage totalitarianism that succeeded it. Your heart breaks for the children in these photographs, at the thought of the horrors that lay In their future.

The Russian Empire was not perfect. It suffered from some problems like any other empire, but we must also not forget that it was a golden period for the flourishing of arts, culture, literature, etc. If you compare it to the communist regime and the era of the Red Terror, you will find that it was a paradise.

When I look at these photos, I have completely different thoughts. They say that humanity has always lived hard, endless wars, people like cannon fodder, all these peasant boys and girls for merciless exploitation for 16 hours a day, girls will be married at 14, they will all grow old early.

Элиты не были русскими по крови. Сужу по своим предкам. Поляки, немцы, татары - они дали ту самую особенную русскую смесь. Речь, повторюсь, об элите.
