One of the stupidest things about the film is that it tried to combine both versions of Mr Freeze into 1 character and failed miserably. The thing about Batman and Robin, Schumacher says this in an interview, is that he was told to make a movie that was more "toy-rific". So the entire movie is basically just a big commercial designed to move action figures--that's it. That's why the 3 heroes apparently either go back to the Batcave and change outfits or just had a spare costumes along between capturing Poison Ivy and confronting Mr. Freeze and why Robin has his "Redbird" bike and they have separate vehicles for driving on ice. The more shit they can throw in this movie, the more they can make toys out of. You can tell, they really just didn't spend enough time going over the script and going over the story because the studio just wanted to ram this big toy commercial down people's throats as quickly as possible.

I remember so distinctly when B&R came out and I was one of the very few who really enjoyed it. It was a Batman movie, it was supposed to be fun and more headed towards families and especially children. I was really surprised at the negativity it received at the time because I was so hyped to have live action Batman movies and just made me wonder how the series would have gone had the studio didn't pressure Joel into making B&R a merchandising machine as well as a very Adam West style film. As I was very young at the time, I was so excited to see all the merchandising and promotion for the film, just 2 years after Forever. I look back to when B&R came out and I remember so many theories at the time of where the 5th film was going to go. I believe Schumacher was toying with the idea of a Scarecrow driven story with hallucination cameos of past villains, especially a possible cameo from Jack Nicholson, tying in the last 4 films into the 5th. This was just before the internet took off where people could post their views but I was so disappointed that Warner Bros had scrapped the 5th film because these films were such a big part of my childhood. It felt like a 5th should have been made as an apology for B&R. Even when Batman Begins came out, it felt so underwhelming for me without an iconic Elfman style score you could remember and also the Tumbler, not a patch on the Batmobile of Burton's era. I still watch the Schumacher/Burton movies far more than any Batman movie that came after them. I just feel B&R was misunderstood and just wasn't what audiences expected after Forever. Schumacher even said that after Forever he wanted to make an origin Batman: Year One as it was his favourite comic of the character but Warner Bros wanted a lighter brighter sequel. Real shame how the series went.
@SimonBergeron19779 жыл бұрын
Rob Walker pointed out THE best argument: WHO's to blame? Because Schumacher seems to apologize for the guys over him, those who did write the checks. He does seem to take the hits for everyone else, as if he was the only one deciding. My guess is he was TOLD to do the movie this way (with the merchandise in mind), and even though he did kill Batman for a few years, I don't think he's so much to blame. If anything, Warner's execs are the ones who should answer to us and apologize.
@1997residente5 жыл бұрын
Yep. But when you read Michael Keaton's reason on why he dropped out Batman Forever,he said Schumacher complained about Burton's dark tone. The colorful aesthetic didn't bother but It pisses me off how Schumacher thought lame dialogue and humor could make this work.

I think the problem with genre's like comic book movies is that once they decline in popularity it becomes a downwards spiral. Because they are less successful people aren't investing in them so that makes them worse which makes them even less attractive for the studious to invest in. One thing it proves though is that a genre is never truly dead. Even if a movie kills it, once the next generation has come that doesn't know about it, it will be revived. Superheroes will always stay with us, they are as old as civilization itself, every single tribe or civilization had stories about supernatural heroes doing good.

While I will never in good conscience say that Batman & Robin is a good movie (because it's clearly not), I can say without any guilt whatsoever that Frank Miller did far more damage to Batman's mythos and the DC Universe in general than Batman & Robin ever did. Yes, Frank Miller gave us The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One - two of the greatest comics ever written. But sadly, just like George Lucas, for some unexplained reason he made it his goal in life to destroy his own legacy with The Dark Knight Strikes Again and All-Star Batman and Robin (aka The Adventures of Crazy Steve and Dick Grayson Age 12). The Dark Knight Strikes Again is a dumb and unnecessary sequel that's far more interested in dishing out social satire than actually telling a compelling story, but ASBAR is the bigger offender because it portrays Batman as a psychotic, unreasonable, sadistic and just plain unlikable asshole. And this was given to us by the same man who once said, and I quote, that "Batman is as good and pure a superhero as you can find". The same man who praised Batman Begins for being true to the character and for having heart and substance. Compared to ASBAR, Batman & Robin is harmless.
@TheAdam199510 жыл бұрын
I know I'm going to get alot of hate for this but Batman & Robin is Guardians of the Galaxy compared to Superman 2! The more I watch and think about that movie, the more it pisses me off. It was a disgrace to the character of Superman and it's legacy. Yes, I do hate it more than Superman 4. As far as I'm concerned, none of the old Superman movies are any good at all. I can give the first film some respect but the rest are super forgettable trash. I'm going to come right out and say that Man of Steel was the first and so far only good live-action Superman movie ever made. Fuck the haters! This movie did what none of the other films have the balls to do. It gave Clark Kent, not Superman, but Clark Kent a challenge. It shows that even the greatest heroes can make mistakes, can be unprepared and don't have the solution to everything. Clark can't save everybody because Zod won't let him by constantly pummeling him. Clark was just a student starting out. He's not Superman right away. He's just an inexperienced youth. Sorry, guys. Man of Steel rocked. It's far from perfect but at least Superman doesn't act smug when he killed Zod unlike in Superman 2!
@dvass725310 жыл бұрын
***** Personally, I wouldn't go so far as to say that Superman 2 is worse than Superman 4, but yeah, it really doesn't hold up well. It still has some entertainment value - I don't care if he's one-dimensional, Terence Stamp's General Zod is impossible to hate; you can tell that Stamp is having fun in the role and he's throwing himself head-first into it. Hell, even the battle in Metropolis is entertaining as hell. Sadly, the movie has a ton of other problems that bring it down significantly, especially the way Superman kills Zod at the end.

Patrick Grealis TTG by a landslide. At least Suicide Squad had great action, cool visuals and funny humor. Plus the characters in films had a little bit of development. It's also NOT insulting. TTG however is not the least bit funny, the animation is lazily done, and there's pretty much no action in the show because the characters are lazy, selfish, annoying, stereotypical, immature, stupid, sadistic, one dimensional assholes that they almost never do any superhero work. And TTG is incredibly insulting. Suicide Squad actually tried. Nothing about TTG is good at all.

The weird thing is-I enjoyed this movie more than Daredevil. Yeah, it was terrible, but I'd rather had a terrible blinking light than a terrible dark gritty movie

I hate when Shumacher and other people say "oh Batman and Robin, it's suppose to be goofy, it's a satire of Batman, blah, blah, blah"... how and why the hell would be a satire?! Especially when it's a sequel to, what was originally, a really dark and captivating story...that's like making the dark knight and then the Adam west show as it's sequel, it's so out of place, it's a poor excuse

While I fully agree, can I just point out that despite how it stands as a film, (Quite well, honestly.) Burton's Batman is a pretty poor Batman film. I love Tim Burton. And that film along with the animated series is why I'm a Batman fan. But it screwed with one huge aspect of Bats's character: He doesn't kill. Especially not when he's already experienced and not accident-prone. (Year One was brutal.) He wiped out quite a few of Joker's mooks in the film. On top of that he pretty much lets the Joker die which is so, so against his character that it is painful. They did not capitalize on his relationship with the clown prince of crime hardly at all. Also, this one is a personal thing, but, I don't like that in that version The Joker was the one who killed Bruce's parents. I think removing the act of random violence it was by tying it into his greatest arch nemesis kind of strips the original killings of their significance. It's just too...convenient. The Joker is often best as an out of nowhere force of nature. As if he simply sprang from the ether to counter Batman. Again, that's just me nitpicking. I love the original film. Batman and Robin is difficult to sit through. Especially for slaughtering Victor Fries. Though, admittedly, Arnold was the best part of the movie. lol

You bring up some awesome points and I feel the same way for the most part. For a while, I couldn't really get into the film because, while Michael Keaton is a great Batman, and same thing for Jack Nicholson about the Joker, Tim Burton seemed not to know the source material too well. He admits he had never read a comic book before making this movie, and for a Batman fan, it does kinda show. Not only with Batman killing people, but also, and this is the biggy for me, that we know the Joker's origin story, and name. Plus the fact that he decided to have the Joker kill Wayne's parents also made the fight seem more revenge filled as opposed to general justice. But still, despite all that, Michael Keaton is my favourite live action Batman, Nicholson is really enjoyable (though I really like Ledger's version better), and it continues to be one of my favourite comic book movies.

I just realized that you guys should do a real thoughts video The Neverending Story. I realize that it's probably too beloved to skewer it with an NC, but watch it again and see if it still holds up. In my opinion it does, but there is a lot of dialogue that should have been left unsaid and simply implied.
