My uncle actually worked on the special effects in this movie. He always said, reading the script, "This is not going to be great, but goddamn will this be interesting to see others watch it." Wasn't wrong.

+Swedish X I honestly think that it was already dead on arrival as soon as you put Mario in live-action. I feel like with a whimsical and magical world such as the mushroom kingdom, it could look beautiful in animation.

Funny fact: Shigeru Miyamoto apparently loved this move, they showed it to Nintendo in a private screening. There were a lot of horrified managers... And Miyamoto sitting there with a grin on his face, just enjoying the ride.

***** He apparently was thinking it would slide over, just in case. XDDD... Another fun fact: Bill White *head of marketing at this time and was having a devil of a time with the movie along with their policies*, left Nintendo partially because of this movie. He then joined Sega and fought against Nintendo in the Lieberman hearings about violence in video games. He was also the one who slapped Nintendo down in an unforgettable moment during said hearings when he pulled out the Super Scope, said it was built by Sega (an error on his part, he meant Nintendo.) And described exactly how you play with it with rapid fire towards targets and it wasn't rated. He in one sentence stopped the hearings, turned the Senators who were huge fans of Nintendo, and saved video games partly because this movie was made.

***** No, from what it sounded like it was the actual movie right before release. Maybe he liked it when he was younger, I don't know. But that's what I read. It could be also he realized it was a train wreck and no matter what happened it would fade into obscurity. Which it did... Partially... But still was so famous it made a black mark on Nintendo's record.

As far as casting Mario, Tom Hanks was initially hired for the role, but was fired and replaced with Hoskins, whom the executives thought was more profitable. (contrary to popular rumor, Danny Devito was never a choice for the role of Mario)

Thats the problem with Hollywood doing video game movies. They just take the characters, change them until they are barely recognizable, put them into a world that looks and feels totally different and make up a shitty story that has maybe a few arcs of the source material. They don't respect video games. They only see them as basket where you can take elements out and build your own story, while not giving a shit, that they take a huge dump on the original.
@supermariof0521
@supermariof0521 7 жыл бұрын
I think the biggest mistake this movie made was that it was live action. If Nintendo were to give the Mario license over to say Walt Disney Animation Studios, we could've gotten something really good.
@gamemediafan1714
@gamemediafan1714 3 жыл бұрын
What's weird is that with how technology has improved, there's no point to make video game movies, cause you could basically make movies within video games themselves. There are so many games that are incredibly story-driven with a fuck ton of cutscenes that have a lot of characters and story elements. Seriously, go back to the Metroid Prime trilogy, Uncharted, the later Legend of Zelda games, Portal, Sonic Adventure games ,etc. So many games now have the capabilities to have cinematic scenes and elements. So making a movie based on a game is pretty pointless cause you could basically make the movie within the game itself. And this especially applies to movie adaptations of video games that are known for having very big stories and cinematic qualities.

Really, the most insane part of all about this movie is the director, who did two films you might have heard of in the previous decade: The Killing Fields and The Mission. How he went from that super highbrow material to this (as well as stuff like the Demi Moore Scarlet Letter and cheap torture porn flick Captivity) in really not that long a time is an utter mystery.
@Charles12
@Charles12 Жыл бұрын
He was actually the producer, but I do kinda blame him for the way the movie turned out because he really should've had the directors make a family friendly, somewhat, game accurate movie (Mario doesn't translate well into live action faithfully) instead of doing their own thing. Yes a director should have final say in what goes into the project, but it should be common knowledge when you let artists loose on an IP with a huge fanbase that's made to make money, and change their vision after pre production is done to suit studio mandates, you're bound for failure.

What's not to love about the Baz Lurhmann Romeo & Juliet film you asked? Let's see…. 1. Leonardo DiCaprio being in it 2. Claire Danes not being able to act if her life depended on it 3. Setting the film in modern day and yet having everybody talk as if they were in the 1500's 4. John Leguizamo as Tybalt being, in my opinion, the worst casting choice in film history (in fact, I'll dare even say that it was a worse casting choice than John Wayne as Genghis Khan in The Conquer) 5. Calling guns "swords" 6. Horrendous editing 7. The Montagues looking like 90's white trash 8. Switching Sampson and Gregory over to the Montagues and Abram over to the Capuleta THAT's whats not to like about it!
@darkservantofheaven

Toyland Flores I was refering to the Berretta with the Virgin Mary on the grips when I said "whats not to love" but yea, the movie itself is bad...I laughed my ass off at the movie when I saw it in 7th grade. Its up there with Queen of the Damned guilty pleasure. Though I'd argue that Jamie Kennedy as Samson is the dumbest casting choice! At lest Leguizamo was having fun! Tybalts pistols were the only thing that truely stuck with me...When I saw them I was like...I want them I want them! but in the end, I'd rather watch Baz Lurhmann's Romeo and Juliet over than any of those Twilight movies...

The history and production of this movie fascinates me. At the time, this was such a daring creative endeavor. Despite the studio trying to attach a lot of big names to this (like Schwarzenegger, Tom Hanks, Harold Ramis, and even Michael Keaton,) nobody wanted to touch this thing, yet I don't blame them. This had the potential to crash and burn (even though it ended up doing so.) Reading the various drafts of the script (see smbmovieDOTcom for full history and downloads) gives a lot of insight into the work that would become this wondrous train-wreck we now know as the world's first video game adaptation.

When I was seven or eight years old (and a big Nintendo enthusiast), my dad called me and said that there is a Super Mario Bros. Movie on TV. I watched maybe five minutes, turned it off, said this is bullshit and went back to my room.

How do you think you would have felt if it turned out the way it was supposed to, as an adult satire?

I would think, that it was/is a horribly executed adult satire... and would watch something of quality instead.

And I do not believe that that was their initial intention, thats sounds more like one of the makers of the picture in hindsight tried to came up with an excuse for their failure.

A few years ago a man named Ben Reeves wrote a article in GameInformer magazine about the making of the Super Mario Bros. movie. Its a well informed read and entertaining too. I would suggest you check it out.

This doesn't save the movie in the least. But, I found the best way to enjoy it is with copious amounts of greasy food and alcohol with your friends doing their own drunken Rifftrax style running commentary. It doesn't make it better, but it becomes a lot more fun.

While I cracked up at the Critic's comment on the pizza running gag, I personally found those funny. Especially the one when Koomba says "Looks like I win" (even if it was more for the line itself than the running gag)

I was 10 when this movie was released before I saw it at the theater I remember buying the novelization of the movie from Barnes & Noble JR I had a Nintendo and was hyped for the movie and then being disappointed and wondering why they made so many changes from the source material.

I just watched this movie again. It came out when I was in 3rd grade, so I was too young to judge it as bad, and liked it. Now, I found it alright but very dumb and with many plot holes and too much exposition. I don't know how a live action Mario Bros could've been good in any rendition.

I wonder how much better a reputation this movie would have had it dropped all the ties to the Mario franchise. I mean, it was a very interesting concept, and even if it still would have had its share of cheesiness, it would have at least been known for being creative and not another infamously "in name only" adaptation.

I love that this film got a brand new transfer on blu-ray and a retrospective documentary... After watching the doco, I have a new appreciation for this film even though it's a mess. It's got a unique look to it and there's some elements to enjoy. And the blu-ray transfer looks amazing. This blu-ray is available everywhere except the US ;)

This movie debuted two weeks before Jurassic Park. Ouch. You have to figure the makers of this movie were thinking "At least we might get a special effects Oscar nomination out of this." Denied. But they sure cleaned up at the Razzies.

You know, with it recently proved that Jumpman is Mario's pappy, Pauline is Mario's mommy, Luigi is Rosalina's dad, Peach is her mom, and the DK we all know is the child of DK Jr., where does this movie fall in? Well, given that the Mushroom Kingdom is being rebuilt...could Jumpman be Luigi and Daisy's kid? But that's just a theory....

The movie does not indicate they were father and son. Although I do see where one can be confused. At the dinner table scene, Luigi (with a thick Brooklyn accent) explains to Daisy how "Mario brought me up. He's been like my mother, my father, everything.."
