As a Mainer who lives practically in the same town as Steven King I just wanted to say that Doug's thoughts on what he's like is actually quite accurate. He's a nice and humble guy who doesn't want to be treated as a celebrity, but just another townie, which all the locals pretty much do. I've never talked to him personally but I know a lot of people who have, as he's always nice and casual when he comes to support local businesses and stuff. So yea regardless of his "hit or miss" writing he's a pretty cool guy.

little bit of trivia, in THE BOOK, (there go those dreaded words! haha) the officer who is attacked by Pennywise when he's turned into the dog is named Koontz. anyone who's familiar with Dean Koontz and his writing knows that he's a huge dog lover. My thought is that that moment was intended to be kind of bizarrely funny, a playful jab at a fellow author and his love of dogs.

Anytime I hear people say, "this IT movie will be true to the book", it makes me realize they haven't read the book. The child sex bond thing and the seduction of Henry Bowers and of course Robert Grey's enemy The Turtle? You can't show everything in the twisted world of King's mind on screen. It'll be the same as every other book adaptation a movie can make within two hours: Hit the bullet points of the story, make it scary and entertaining. If you want something to be like the book, pick up the audio version of the book. All that being said, I hope the movie is scary and entertaining.

I've only read some of the book, but the description of the clown in the book is some scary stuff. The movie has a kind of cartoon interpretation. In the book hes like this calm sounding angel whose intentions are pure evil but his voice is inviting. He takes many forms but hes been described as being like dry bones, cracking and popping with thin skin over top. His eyes are black with a small diamond of light in the center of his eye sockets and he wears a generic kind of clown suit. but the real question is....Do they float?

Totally agree with Rob on Stephen King's locations. Desperation, Nevada from Desperation is just so beautifully realized. Every building the characters go into is so intricately detailed that it simultaneously feels alive and dead all at once. The movie theater, the police station, the abandoned mine just all brilliantly made. Also just looked up the new Penny Wise from the It remake and.....I kind of love it. He looks REALLY cool. And I appreciate that they didn't just ape Tim Curry's style. It really looks like they wanted to do their own unique take and personally I think it works.

I have no opinion on scary movies or scary books or any of the writers they are talking about, but I just love hearing them talk so much that watching this video is worth it. I never used to think about what I'm watching/reading to a fraction of the extent I now do before watching Nostalgia Critic. It might seem by doing so like you're ruining what you would otherwise consider awesome movies by analyzing them to the extent that a good critic does, but you're actually learning to weed through the crap to find those nuggets of gold, which allows you to appreciate them that much more deeply. When something truly touching, amazing, original, moving happens, and you're not distracted by the crap posing as those things, then your ability to experience such works gets elevated to a new level.

***** Mmmhhh no, I've read the book many times (like every "Dark Tower" related SK book) and they *never* speculate on what the balloons are. Implied or not. As for Henry Bowers, I think you're (sorry English is not my first language) confusing/remembering different scenes incorrectly; can't find the right word... There is a scene in which young Bev is almost assaulted sexually by her father (because Pennywise told him Bev was playing with boys), And just when Bev manages to escape from him = Henry, Vitor and Belch find her and they try to kill her, but there is no "rape" subtext. Only violence. Bev is at one point afraid that Henry would rape her (when she spies the trio + Patrick having fun with a lighter) but Henry never expressed such a thought.

***** What rating did original movie had? Because I don't think this one wll pass for PG-13. Also, I think this movie will cause mass hysteria among Americans, due to continuation of the current clown prank attacks. People are so overreacting because of it, that it is hilarious. Believe it or not, but there are even serious conspiracies made about it and how "Ancient clown cults" are about to cause a purge on american youth. No, I am not joking.

I only really found out about It when I got a VHS tape from my sister for my birthday over a decade and a half ago. Like alot of people she seemed to think it was scary as she was a little girl who saw it with her friends when they were very little in the early 90's. Let me just say that as teenager of the early 2000's who had been previously exposed to better horror films such as Hellraiser, Alien, and Nightmare on Elm Street, to name a few prior to my viewing of It, I really didn't find It to be scary. Also compared to some of the above mentioned I found certain things like, the writing, the acting, the production values, and even the cinematography to be rather lackluster. And another issue for me was I just found it to be too long, a younger me was always puzzled to why it felt like two movies smooshed together. I only ever watched the whole thing once as when attempting to rewatch it, I'd always get really bored by the time it got to part-2. There are certain scenes I feel if they were cut out I wouldn't miss all that much. There were also certain scenes that always really bothered me like the father getting angry with his son for going into his dead brother's room, like what Doug said "how dare you mourn the loss of your one and only brother" Overall I just never really got much out of It the TV mini-series, recently doug made an editorial titled (When Should Remakes Not Happen) and I have to say I'm all aboard It being remade, as I think just about anything would be an improvement over the It TV mini-series, and I have to say so far I am impressed by the trailers, as It actually looks sort of scary. I've sure quoted the word it alot in these paragraphs, no pun intended.

What are your thoughts on the remake, coming out next year, Doug and Rob? Are okay with the 80s setting, as apposed to the 50s/60s settings of the novel and TV film? Do you like the new look of Pennywise, for the reboot or do you still prefer Tim Curry to the new one?

It'll be better than the crappy Poltergeist remake, at least. Setting it in the 80s doesn't necessarily ruin it, but the 50s made it a lot scarier and more innocent. You actually feel sorry for the losers. People in the 50s had more morals than those in the 80s. The remake will probably have the losers playing NES and hanging out, at the mall playing arcade games, to clarify that it takes place in the 80s. I like how the TV film took place 1960 and that 50s feel is still intact as well as the second part, set in 1990, which still contains that 80s feel as well.

The reason(to me anyways) that movies like THE EXORCIST , SALEM'S LOT and HALLOWEEN or IT are so "scary" is because King and Blatty basically raped your mind's safety zone by bringing in old monsters into YOUR modern times and across you street , thus not giving us any safe place to which say to our selves "it's all just a movie/story".

The Tim Curry clown is scary to me because he looks like one of those ones that you would approach at a circus and that's what he has on his side, like you can approach this, it is safe he's a circus clown and when you get close enough he'll snatch you up. The new Pennywise, The Bill Skarsgard Pennywise is just one of those clowns were you looking at and you're automatically afraid. You know not even go near it. The Tim Curry one had that false sense of security with it that I think made it a bit more scary in a different way, a more realistic way I guess you could say.

There are moments in IT that are really well done. I will agree that those moments are all in the first part when the characters are kids. The biggest problem with the film is it was made for television. the book is intense, dark, scary and violent. Just things you can't put on network TV.

I tend to really like Stephen King books, but they don't really translate to screen very well. Unrelated: I wish Kubrick had changed the title and character names in The Shining. It wasn't the same story, and it didn't have the same feel. With as much as was changed, that little bit should've been changed too. It watches like it was inspired by a brief skimming of The Shining. It's not a bad movie, it's just not The Shining. I read The Shining when I moved into my first apartment by myself and parts of it kept me awake at night, which is hard to do. The scene where Jack goes to investigate after Danny gets attacked, and is standing in the hallway is legitimately frightening. The hedge animals would've severely messed with my mind if it happened to me. I love that book, but it's not good on film.

Stephen King created one of the most terrifying stories to me, and that is the first third or so of "The Stand." That part of the book, it's hard to put down and it's horrific what is happening.
