Can we once and for all put an end to the canard that Burton's 'Charlie & The Chocolate Factory' is truer to the book than Mel Stuart's 'Willy Wonka'? Burton's film restores a couple of minor, superficial things -- the Oompa Loompa chants from the book, the ancillary character of Charlie's father -- but adds a metric ton of new stuff, including a third act that completely betrays the original novel. Burton's film strays much, much further from the the book than Stuart's does. Wonka's childhood, Wonka's father, the fact that it's Wonka who really needs the Buckets and not the other way around? That's all the remake. Characters like Mike Teevee and (arguably) Wonka himself are all but reinvented from the ground up. But those Oompa Loompa chants are word-for-word, so Burton's is somehow deemed the "truer" adaptation. Oh, and the squirrels from the book are here, too. Big whoop. Stuart's film makes a few changes, but they're for good reason. The addition of Slugworth's Everlasting Gobstopper test makes it so that Charlie doesn't win through sheer attrition. He has to earn that victory at the end. The fizzy lifting drink shows that Charlie, too, is fallible. And ditching Charlie's father just makes sense. The character is dull and serves no dramatic function. Without him, the story becomes about Wonka's search for a son and Charlie's search for a father. With him still in the picture, the connection between Wonka and Charlie is much less resonant.
@seanfraser31258 жыл бұрын
THANK YOU!!!! I have always thought that the original was, in some ways, truer to the book than the Burton version. Really, neither is very accurate to the book, but that doesn't really matter much. At least the Stuart version kept the same tone and charm of the book. RIP Gene Wilder :(
@alexanderklepp8 жыл бұрын
Both are to me. They both capture it in different ways. Just my opinion, but both are of quality to me.
@gokuxsephiroth45058 жыл бұрын
I really feel like both Slugworth and the fizzy lifting drink performed the same dramatic function, and the fizzy lifting drink was done worse. They're both honesty tests, but not only is Grandpa Joe the one egging Charlie on to try it, (Despite being the moral standing for Charlie in both the book and the remainder of the movie, so I don't get it) meaning it wasn't Charlie who decided to do wrong, but he was allowed a chance to repent when the other kids had horrible things happen to them without a chance for a "sorry". If that scene had followed the book's logic, he would have gotten chopped up by the ceiling fan. And I don't understand what you mean by father/son relationship in the movie as well- Wonka was more of a mystical mentor, I thought, and Grandpa Joe had the father role. The Slugworth honesty test was great, though- much closer to the original book's intention. After all, Wonka wouldn't want someone who's as tempted by something as common and silly as money- he wants someone to carry on the wonder. That was a good change, actually, I feel that Charlie did earn his victory by not being tempted, rather than just not touching anything. Just my thoughts, though.

@@ragejoona431 But at least with those remakes of Dracula and Frankenstein, there was still some connection to their original source material. I think all the censorship for things such as sex and homosexuality actually helped a bit because if directors wanted to add that in they had to do it in such a subtle and clever way that it made the character fun to talk about. Not to mention that "gay" characters back then were very interesting whether they were written as a bad guy or not. In the 90s gay characters had substance to them. All they were is gay. Rather than having homosexuality be a simple aspect of who they were it was just what they were. "I'm gay!" "Ok.....anything thing else? A past? Any hobbies?" "Nope. I'm just gay." "That's it? There's nothing else?" "Yeah pretty much." "No inner struggle with you sexuality growing up, or fear of not being excepted by the ones you love?" "Nope. I'm just gay." "Are you a protagonist or an antagonist?" "Neither. I'm just here to be gay." "Oh. Ok."

Absolutely. It wasn't even awful (since it was a shot for shot redo) but you're right. Utterly pointless.
@Shadowman47108 жыл бұрын
Gregory House You're talking about The Fog reboot in, what 2005? Yeah that was terrible.
@Shadowman47108 жыл бұрын
Gregory House That was the remake, right. I actually enjoy the original "The Fog" with Jamie Lee Curtis. Not a great film but a lot of fun. Good for Halloween.
@Shadowman47108 жыл бұрын
Gregory House In fact, maybe one 'Nostalgaween' Doug ought to take a look at that one and the rest of Jamie Lee Curtis' scream queen period films. I don't know if he's done Halloween yet or not but that one and the sequel plus Terror Train might make a nice set.
@Shadowman47108 жыл бұрын
Gregory House Ahh well I don't think any of the Halloween films are worth talking about after the first two. Halloween 3, which I saw years ago is just...weird. But that makes sense. These guys tend to coordinate their reviews. One Curtis film that I would love ANYBODY to discuss is "Road Games' which is a neat little psychological thriller that seems to have been completely forgotten.

At least the Ghostbusters remake had some redeemable qualities and even one of the few live action films with good 3D if you saw it that way. It was mediocre. This is just plain bad.

At least one good thing came from the Haunting remake. The Nostalgia Critic's review of it got me to check out the excellent original Haunting.

As bad as the House on Haunted Hill remake was at least it made me watch the original.
@TheGoldenDunsparce8 жыл бұрын
I watched the original when I was 9, and it fucked me up so badly. That old lady ghost in the closet is all I remember, and even then I can't quite remember it (might not even be an old lady lol), but the feeling... I can't forget that feeling of almost shitting myself in fear for the first time ever lol
@BossKnightFilms8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there are few modern movies that just freak me out the way movies like House on Haunted Hill used to. Not trying to get all "everything new sucks and everything old is great!" I still get goosebumps watching old Hammer films. Mixing British humor/drama and horror is a great thing.

To say that Fant4stic was the worst remake of all time would be the same as to say that the first Fantastic Four Movie was good to begin with. Hell forbid though I didn't know Barb Wire had a remake.

Barb Wire was the remake. Casablanca is the original.

I was hoping that you would do your real thoughts on Garbage Pail Kids. Even though I've heard many times that you two consider that the worst film of all time. But I do want to hear more about your mom helping you avoid that movie and took PG more seriously back in the day. Just as a way to commemorate her. You two take your time trying to heal and reflect. It's though losing a loved one. Best wishes.
@doctordoom858 жыл бұрын
Worst remake for me is Rob Zombie's Halloween. Carpenter clearly showed that the minimal amount of explanation we got from Loomis on Michael's mental state in the original was enough. So right off the bat Zombie fucks all over that by trying to "explain" it for like the first half of the movie*. And then not content with ending there he managed to make an even worse film with his Halloween 2, the worst film in the whole series, and when we're talking about a series that has had a movie where Michael rapes his underage niece (producer's cut of 6) and a movie where Busta Rhymes beats Michael with karate (8), that's saying something. *what's funny is that psychologically explaining your antagonist can work, you just know how to restrain yourself. Hannibal Rising was a piece of shit because it showed way too much and included stupid elements like Nazis tricking Hannibal into eating his sister. The TV series Hannibal fixes this as we get far less information about Hannibal's past other than little bits here and there and when his sister's fate is revealed Hannibal says he couldn't understand the concept of his sister loving him and vice versa and eventually rationalized this as her deliberately influencing him so he killed and ate her. THAT works because it's simple and to the point.

Eh I like his remake. At least its different and creative. Most horror remakes just re hash the 1st movie and don't do anything new. Nightmare on elm street (2010) being the worst.

Did you hear about what John Carpenter said recently? He said that Rob Zombie lied about Carpenter's response to the remake. Zombie said he was very bitter, when really, he just told him to do what he wanted.

Maybe you should do "Stephen Kings Rose Red" - if I remember right Spielberg and King tried to do "The Haunting" movie together, but both split up. Spielberg produced "The Haunting", while Stephen King did the "Rose Red"-miniseries, which is in any way far superior to this pile of crap! And since it will be soon Halloween and the Stephen-King-Mini-Series is a recurring theme on your show, you should absolutely do that - noones going to be dissapointed - promised :)

This is one of those movies that I watched when I was younger and just went along with. 13 Ghosts was another one. Going back and watching them, they are terribly written and not scary, but it was something to watch. Few scary movies have stuck with me, like Darkness Falls. In my opinion, still a pretty good movie.

_The Haunting_ (1963) is one of my favorite horror films, and quite possibly my all-time favorite haunted house movie ever. The remake on the other hand, ruins the entire point of the original, Jan de Bont, while an amazing cinematographer, _Speed_ was a great film, but he was the *_wrong_* choice to direct a haunted house movie, let alone _The Haunting_ .
