Of course, there is also my struggles with the anxiety of living under a modern, capitalist system and the fear that the forces of Fascism that my father gave his life to stop might one day come back and that I might turn out insane like my best friend, Syd. I'd like to imagine that a lot of my generation feel this way, and it might bring them comfort and contemplation to hear these feelings reflected in art." *The Nostalgia Critic:* "LOL YOUR JUST WHINING ABOUT HOW SCHOOL SUCKS! Honestly the analogy to hating The Wall because a kid in school who wore a Dark Side of the Moon t shirt beat you up is pretty apt considering Doug has gone on record saying he hates the tv show Doug all because kids in school bullied him since he shares the same name. At first the running joke was funny, to hate something over such a petty reason but now his pettiness levels are so off the charts even when he's "out of character" that I can't discern the difference between Doug the person and Nostalgia Critic the character. He talks about certain films being pretentious when he himself is pretentious and seems to have a self inflated ego about him. I don't really care if he likes or dislikes something I like or vice versa but he is guilty of many of the things he is critical of, like not being funny or entertaining in the last 5 or more years.

I know this comment is like a year old now, but since then I've actually seen some examples that show that Doug, despite all the flaws I mentioned, can at least take criticism a lot better than others. NC stopped being funny when he started doing all the sketches and his reviews ballooned from 15-20 minutes to 40+
@Silverstar_5 жыл бұрын
Doug tried to retire the Critic twice, but each time fan outcry and the failure of CA's other projects led to Doug bringing the character back. The feeling I get with Doug is that he really wants to break free of the Critic and do more ambitious stuff, but after Demo Reel flopped with viewers and the Pop Quiz Hotshot debacle blew up in the channel's face, he's become reluctant to try anything without the NC label slapped on it. There's also the matter of Doug signing away the rights to the Critic character to CA president Mike Michaud, so he's probably more or less forced to continue NC for the algorithm. Bloating the Critic episodes with story lines, filling them with more and more sketches and performances from his troupe and making them extra long seems to be his way of doing Demo Reel type stuff while keeping fans of the Critic happy, unfortunately these latest NCs just haven't been very good. The whole "angry reviewer" shtick is best taken in small doses and doesn't really lend itself to a 30 + minute format. Most of the online personalities who gained notoriety around the same time as Doug (James Rolfe, Lewis Lovhaug, Lindsey Ellis, etc.) have since improved their crafts and evolved their shows beyond just screaming angrily at media; unfortunately the same can't be said of Doug. He can be funny when he has a good concept, but he really needs to move away from the constraints of the NC and learn to better hone his craft.

My main problem with this, aside from being a comedy black hole, is the insensitive implications of some of the jokes and comments Doug makes, whether intentional or not, and the way he takes things out of context in very degrading ways. He interprets Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2 as “school sucks because all my teachers hate me and I don’t wanna do homework so I must rebel against the system,” when it’s actually much more serious and not really something to be joked about. The song was inspired by Roger Waters being abused by his teachers as a child, during a time when it was perfectly legal for teachers to perform verbally, and in some cases physically abusive practices on students. With that added context, the jokes Doug makes seem to imply that Roger’s abuse wasn’t a big deal and he was just overreacting because of hormones. Same with When The Tigers Broke Free (which is about Roger’s father dying in war). I’m not saying you’re not allowed to make fun of The Wall because it deals with these themes. I’ll admit I think it’s a pretty stupid movie at times, and I’ve seen very good and funny parodies of it. But good parodies make fun of the movie, not the horrible context in which it was made. This is a perfect example of how context is everything.
