I still don't know what "Her sword traps the souls of its victims" even MEANS. Like... dead is dead, yeah? Would a regular sword not be just as good at removing your soul from your body? Or did nobody trap Slipknot's soul so he can come back eventually? Does he just have to talk to the Spirit Healer or make his way back to his corpse?

@@The5lacker Definitely not enough time for each of the "fairly well-known criminals" to contemplate the fact that the existence of her character means there IS an afterlife in their universe, which means a possibility of eternal reward/punishment based on their actions, and whether or not being trapped in a badass sword might be worse than...something else. Yeah, let's not dwell on that.

Kind of stuff that any fresh-out-of-the-college visual designer would say "yup, that's no bueno". It's funny that the text even got a subtle drop shadow - that's usually meant to create some isolation for the typography from the background - but since the text itself is dark... it does nothing.

I think something that could have been neat with the Unicorn is he, in a panic, checks what was stabbed. Seeing its the money, he tosses it aside like it's a day old diaper and checks his coat in a panic in order to see a completely unharmed unicorn, in which he'd give a very; almost out of character; comedically childish enthusiastic response at the unharmed unicorn.

My mind jumps to a subversion like Boomarang is stabbed, the audience thinks the unicorn saved him, but the knife punctured through and he's actually badly wounded. Though I guess that same set-up and payoff were used in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with the detective novel, so it's not the most original idea.
@IncredibleMet

I like that idea Travis Wolf and I'd like to combine it with Quote's. He gets stabbed, checks, realises he's badly wounded, roots around for the unicorn, realises it's fine but covered with his blood and gets angry and goes apeshit at the thing for messing up his unicorn more than wounding him. The audience would be like "dang! he must really love his pink unicorns!"

@@Saibellus That could've been a real plot point. Maybe Waller doesn't trust him with a sniper rifle because he could kill her or the other people with the kill switch before they could react. More clarity comes with what we know now: Enchantress's brother was originally Steppenwolf, leading off from _Batman v Superman,_ while Steppenwolf in _Justice League_ was planned to be Darkseid, leading off from _Suicide Squad._ Waller was in Midway City for some reason bridging the other two movies. Dan's probably right, the original _Suicide Squad_ probably wasn't a very good movie, especially if it was an overly long bridge plot between other movies. But as Dan points out in a later video, the reason Waller and Incubus's stories seem to go from nowhere to nowhere is because they got all the way to _CG-animating Steppenwolf in post-production_ before they added Incubus to the movie.

So, the script was crap, and instead of fixing it, the director tried to shoot his way out, and got nothing fixable in editing. So they got worse editors, who couldn't fix it. So then, they combined the bad edit with the worse edit, and probably lost some continuity in the process. Then, the audience showed up to see the Joker, who wasn't really there. What could go wrong?

A lot of the problems came from Warner Brothers. When David Ayer was hired, they already had a release date in August 2016. As mentioned, Ayer only had 6 weeks to write the script. Scripts usually go through multiple drafts before shooting begins. Then after BvS came out in April 2016 and was criticized for its depressing tone, WB demanded reshoots and re-editing to make it more comedic. They also refused to push the film back, just like with Justice League. So don't blame Ayer, blame Warner Brothers.

I also would like to add somethin that I noticed while rewatching. Deadshot several times speaks about their entire operation like it's some horrible suicide mission, where they are barely making it out alive. Like, in a scene with Waller reveal he says "This dude better cure cancer after all that shit". But it never looks like they are having trouble. They dispatch all of Enchantresses goons with ease. No one ever gets hurt or injured (Boomerang gets stabbed once, but who cares about him). The movie never really shows that these characters are in any kind of danger. So, it's always really weird when Deadshot talks about how hard this mission is, and "when will at all end, Flag?". Makes Deadshot seem lazy, to be honest

Gotham's Finest well, that's pretty much the problem of action scenes in general in this film. They're all pointless filler. All enemies are faceless zombies, and no main character dies or gets injured, and their characters dont progress in any way. In a good action movie an action scene is a result of good conflict buildup and has narrative purpose beyond "it's an action movie, so we need to see some action". And no, we still need to see the Squad being in danger, even if we know that they're still humans. Deadshot in particular is supernaturally good at shooting, so we need to establish that he is not invincible in some way. We need to see that stuff, we can't just assume the danger there

It wasn't just Harley who said shit like that which is the worst part. El Diablo literally said something along the lines of 'I'm not losing another family' in reference to the squad. I actually ended up tilting my head to the side and giving my family the look of 'did they actually just say/do that?' Same exact reaction to Katana's """Introduction""" scene. The dialog in this movie feels like the 'flavor dialog' you get in games, when your team is walking trough an environment and comments on it. It does not advance the plot and only if done well does it let you get to know your characters.
@lartrak
@lartrak 8 жыл бұрын
That's an astute observation - they have that neutral dialogue in games that is meant to be character building but has to be completely stand-alone. It works in a free roaming game quite naturally as you spend hours with each character, but it's very poor writing in an encapsulated linear narrative like film.
@thejamesthird
@thejamesthird 8 жыл бұрын
lartrak exactly, this 'flavor dialogue' works well in; the witcher, mass effect, gears of war 2&3 or fallout 3. But in GOW 1, final fantasy 15 and fallout 4 it felt like the same few hollow and pointless lines repeated over and over, like his example about suicide squad with the witches heart, same shit repeated. I loved the games I mentioned but it was just the worst in flavor dialogue, it's just there to fill time between action set pieces rather than contribute in a meaningful way!!

Can you tell me the difference between momentary editing and structural editng please ?, i've searched the internet for 2 weeks hâhhha
@Tuckerscreator
@Tuckerscreator 6 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly, momentary editing is how an individual scene is edited. Structural editing is how the film as a whole has arranged its scenes. Bad momentary editing results in things like dialogue that doesn't flow together, character blocking that makes their movements feel abrupt or out of order, the action being too hard to follow, etc. Bad structural editing means there may be too many unnecessary scenes, or essential scenes may be missing, or scenes out of order, or repetitive, or not adding up to a story at all.

See, the frustrating things is that a well made movie could juggle at least a handful of characters and still have you invested in their fates and stories. Or at the very least have you impressed by the characters even if their stories don't matter. You shouldn't have to be familiar with the source material if the movie is GOOD. There's a decent number of canonical characters in the Fellowship of the Ring, but even without reading the books I feel like I have a firm grasp of each character and a fair amount of investment in the fate of the world they live in and each story that may be unfolding within. Suicide Squad just tumbled down the stairs and spilled its box of action figures at you and called it a movie.

The thing that got me the most was the fact that at the end, Harley just went with the rest back in the prison, but the bomb in her neck was already disabled by one of the Joker's guys. Like, it was made a big deal in the scene where she jumps at the rope on the helicopter and escapes, they try to blow her up, but it doesn't work. But then at the end they are threatened with the bombs again and the others have no other options but to go back in prison, but Harley could have just left because hers was disabled. And it was never mentioned that it starts working again, so it's just assumed that it remained disabled. They just completely forgot that they disabled her neck bomb. Even she forgot about it, because she immediately touches her neck and bolts only when Flag destroys his bomb detonating wrist thing in the bar. They made this huge plot point and then they completely forgot they did it.

god i forgot to reply to this "Perhaps instead of defining base assumptions with a clumsy traffic light example he ought to have talked about how the gaming journos started gamergate in the first place" that is why you should watch again, the traffic light example was to show how some things are assumed as normal in arbitrary manner, not because they are more logical or more efficient, but because of inertia and an unquestionable decision he very clearly define how gamergate is divided by two groups, the ones who genually believed in the journalistic cause, and the appropriators whom only goal was to be biggots and sexist his interest was to talk about the second group and how they used the sincere group "But secondly, this idea that he has about gamergate being a reaction to increased visibility of minority voices should be crossed out and incinerated." clearly because you said so, not because of what people in gamergate actually said and we had actual evidence that you are making a very wrong assumption, as was shown in the video "It comes from a feminist "base assumption" that feminists are the voice for minorities and that their ideology promotes the best interests of minorities." no one said that, feminist are not the voice of ALL minorities, but they speak for woman and many in the LGBT group " It's almost as if he's conflating the two, because his bullet points about gamergate's base assumptions don't even mention the increased visibility of minority voices, but rather representation in gaming, which is a completely seperate issue. " it is not, the visibility of minorities is what provoked the increased representation, it is not completely separeted, and neither was his bullet point his argument was that gamer gate follows this theme "in the internet everyone is default" , not anonymous, default, if you don't reveal who you are you are assumed to be a white hetero guy, which is undeniable that his was GG assumption "Then he talks about terrorism in gamergate. I'm sure everyone agrees that the sort of gamergate people who take down websites and try to de-platform people are wrong and unhelpful, but then he just has to lump in CRITICS with those same terrorists." like he said, one shields the other the "terrorists" are the critics audience, and they confirm the critics bias against minorities, the "terrorists" attacked on their name (just look at the comment sections that they dogpile) "Well then don't put your ideas out for everyone to see!" so you are telling that people should open hand of theyr freedom because assholes exist? how very quaint weren't the gamer gate people the "rationals"? the ones who were up for freedom? now you say the people who criticize GG should just keep in silence as if it was censorship? hypocrisy much? "Then he says "the primary target of corruption and conspiracy accusations being women, queer folk, and their allies" Which pretty much gives it away. By "allies" he means "feminists" allies means allies, if you assume that allies means just feminists you are just making wrong assumptions and either case, what would be the problem with having feminists allies? what is your problem with feminism? with what feminist group do you have a problem with? and why feminist in the conversation are a problem when gamer gate was run by and support by white supremacists and literal nazis?? have you actually checked how the GG people is going on today? because the mask have fallen for most of then, they finally admit they are the nazis we always knew they were "He's trying to make it seem like gamergate is about identity polotics. It's about IDEOLOGIES. " "identity politics" is an manifestation of ideologies and how very coincidental that the ideologies that are criticized just so happen to be the ones who defend minorities "Then he correctly assesses the term "literally who" and proceeds to incorrectly assess the very same term. First he says that the name was created to deflect accusations that gamergate was all about hating Zoe Quinn, which is true, but then he says that it was meant to... .... ....dehumanize her? I don't even understand what would be the point of that. " well you answered "They are rejecting her because she was never meant to be anything other than a catalyst for a broader discussion." she was dehumanized her, GG turned her into a symbol, a strawman, an example if you think it just stopped with calling her "literally who", you are either naive or blind rape threats, dog pilling, doxxin, and so on these woman, people criticized GG were hunted by reactionaries, that USED GG to do so, doesn't matter how it begun, but what it became, and nazi had run the show using the legit critics as shield, very much like you intentionally or not is doing now.

the whole "losing track of Enchantress' heart" is something that really bothers me. All I can think of is Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom when Indy is poisoned and everyone is kicking the antidote around. There's a great example of an object = suspense. When it's "lost" the characters and audience feel that panic and ultimate relief when found in the scramble. In Suicide Squad, the object is just...gone. No suspense or importance attached to it.

I know this comment is 5 years old but I can't help but get excited over the temple of doom opening and how perfect it is. not a flawless movie, but that opening sequence has perfect escalation, tension, fun silliness, all of it works. it revels in its own wackiness while also having engaging action, utilizing its setting and props, with actual stakes. it's maybe my favorite example of "characters chase object being kicked around amongst chaos that is comically always just out of their grasp", because it's both easy to follow AND fun, as that gimmick is prone to be frustrating to watch. suicide squad couldn't fail harder at this understanding of good action.

If WB had a clue how to handle production of DC movies there would be more than one good movie out of the bunch. Whoever's idea it was to only give Ayer six weeks to write the movie should be fired (if they haven't been already). For this kind of movie, six weeks might give you time for a solid first draft. So, they've already shot themselves in the foot. Ayer shooting over 200 hours, before reshoots, in order to attempt to find the tone and plot pretty much guarantees that the movie was going to be a mess even before WB tried to "fix" it. I imagine a lot of the editing problems in the movie come down to a lack of coverage, or things not working due to reshoots to try and give the movie a more comedic tone. From the sound of it, a lot of the ending initially relied on the Joker. Leto's Joker had a much, much, bigger part in Ayer's original cut and his plot tied into the ending of the movie. Cutting that probably lead to a lot of the problems with the final battle. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of editing issues in the movie come down to a lack of coverage. Plot crucial scenes getting cut in order to make the final version and coverage simply not existing to fill in the holes left by the cuts. Suicide Squad might very well be the opposite problem of what happened with Solo. Lucasfilm, reportedly, reshot most of Solo when they brought on Ron Howard. SS had extensive reshoots, but it doesn't sound like it was quite as extensive as that. Which leaves Suicide Squad feeling like three completely unique movies all vying for dominance over the same film.

I think the fact that it's a $175 million dollar production is what prevents one person from fixing it. A project of that size is pretty ungainly just by its nature, and when you add in the fact that the top dogs who play studio politics are infamously incapable of admitting error for fear of appearing weak, it's almost impossible for any one person (or even an entire department) to raise their hand and say "Excuse me, isn't this obviously bad idea obviously bad?"

When Flagg yells "Her heart's out! We can end this!" I distinctly remember thinking "Oh, the only reason they would signpost that so obviously is because there is something the audience doesn't understand about the heart." I (much like your suggestion with the unicorn) then expected there to be further twist with the heart, and the audience should pay close attention and track the heart. That Harley, who had antagonized and undermined Flagg constantly through the film, was now in possession of the heart and therefore in control despite Flagg so obviously thinking he was in control... That only the person with the heart could kill the Enchantress... That Harley would usurp the Enchantress' power to escape.... but no. Just no.

Chekov's gun serves as an illustration here, as this movie's an inch away from a _literal_ failure at it: Deadshot's introduction spends a few seconds lingering on his odd proficiency with the musket. That's not impressive enough to reiterate Deadshot's skill, and it's superfluous anyway if that's the intent. It's a solid set-up, though, for a later-act gag in some appropriate location: crack of a gunshot, threat falls, cut to Deadshot with a smoking musket. Never happens.

Let's not even mention how the movie makes an even bigger joke out of Katana by inter-cutting her half-paragraph of tragic emotional backstory with a gag! Gotham's Finest I do watch a lot of those but the people dying in those, cracking jokes are typically faceless goons. I didn't hear any jokes when Quicksilver died, nor the main cast of Rogue One, nor Han Solo. Not even with Superman's death. If they want us to care about their main characters, they shouldn't insert inane jokes that have nothing to do with what's actually being said sloppily in while that character is crying and going through emotional pain. Also, please do not try to make assumptions on my viewing habits simply because you didn't know how to respond to my valid point.

I believe Hayley was saying that there should have been a pause to let the tragedy of the moment sink in so the audience feels some sympathy/connection to Katana. Without that connection, there's not really a reason she should be there. She didn't really do anything in the movie anyway. Her swords steal no souls except in that brief flashback. I'm pretty sure Hayley put "that's not appropriate" in quotes to describe the type/tone of the pause she would have liked to see, not a line that she thought someone needed to say. I see what you're saying in that the Squad only care about themselves so they wouldn't care that Katana had an emotional backstory, but I feel there would have been a better way to present that. Because a better writer would be able to write a scene in a way that the audience remains sympathetic to a character even if other characters in the story do not. I think it was a case of trying to squeeze too much in one movie. The characters are introduced like 3 times, but we don't feel invested in them because we're mostly told what their past is and how we should feel about it rather than shown. Yes, there are flashbacks, but for a character's developmental and empathetic arc to be truly felt by audiences, we have to see it unfold steadily over the course of the film. Harley could have just as easily not said anything, pretended like she wasn't listening to the story, changed the subject, or just rolled her eyes. And the editor could have cut the scene so that Flagg tells us that her husband is in the sword and then go directly to Katana crying, then wait a beat, maybe even show some of the more sympathetic characters like Diablo or Deadshot reacting, and then move on.

If even you think that they aren't perfect and agree with his points, then why don't you see how it's bad editing? Does putting black font on black background make sense? Does showing crucial information about the Enchantress' brother in the middle of exposition in the form of vague images actually make the it works for the movie? Does stopping the momentum and flow of the action just so Flagg can inform the team about the Enchantress' heart being ripped out, even though we just saw it, makes the movie better? If they aren't perfect, then maybe actually fixing these problems can make them perfect.

The sheer scale problems were the thing that annoyed me the most when the film came out; this is a group that works in the comics because they do secret and ridiculous missions that no one else would agree to (eg. fight an entire stadium full of zombies to find one person), and that they're all disposable. But the movie made it this grandiose superweapon, and followed it around with something akin to a private army, and never really used the fact that they're villains for any sort of significant payoff... Your video made me realize just how much the way the movie is put together highlights each of its fundamental issues... Anyway, great analysis, bad movie.

@@rhythmandblues_alibi That's actually fairly simple. Each sequel has to have higher or equal steaks to the previous to feel exciting, but then other films/comics released at the same time need to compete so they match the steaks or beat it. The end result is that since the 60s we've had progressive creep of threat to the point that comics regularly deal with multiverse destroying events for soft reboots which can't stick because people still love old characters and the reboots have to vaaery quickly approach planet level threats to compete so it never lasts. Marvel is currently struggling with this, Infinity War dealt with destroying half of all life in the universe so what's next has to be even bigger hence the focus on drawing in a multiverse, it's not just one universe under threat but millions.

Honestly, I think part of the reason I would say that BoP worked (or at least worked much better) is that it actually COMMITTED to the atmosphere of wacky neon contrivances. Harley was clearly telling the story and they didn't constantly cut to a war documentary's color palette, the soundtrack was much better spaced out and had a consistently bouncy feel for the most part, and the flashback introductions were used to demonstrate the unreliability of the narrator (Harley). It all felt much more casual, even when dealing with pretty high stakes or tension, and the only parts where you were confused about what was happening were when you were supposed to be because Harley is unpredictable, never in dramatic moments where you needed to be able to follow the action. I genuinely enjoyed BoP and went back for another theater viewing- Suicide Squad I haven't even gone back to once out of theaters and I maintain it's one of the sloppiest and least coherent movies I've seen, while still managing to be boring for an unfortunate chunk of it's runtime; honestly, managing to be boring AND scattered AND over-narrated AND underdeveloped is almost an achievement. BoP is never what I'd consider unambiguously boring, there's always either new information, character development, or action of some sort on screen, whether it's high-quality or not.

I actually saw Assault on Arkham and I THOUGHT that's what SS was going to be: Not every "superhero movie" has to be about saving the world/universe from an apocalyptic threat. especially when the team you assemble is clearly not equipped to deal with it. We got got guns, swords, boomerangs and...a baseball bat. Yep, I feel so confident in their skills to handle this cosmic level being. *rolls eyes* I would have loved a heist movie with these guys.

The most surprising thing about the unicorn is that a very simple way to keep both the unicorn and the money, and to subvert the audience's expectation with it, would have been to have the wad of cash hidden inside the unicorn : you'd understand why he was so adamant to keep it, you'd have a moment of surprise of "wait how did the unicorn block the stab?" followed by a fun and understandable payoff, and a minor redifinition of the character as more grounded and cunning than what he pretends to be.

You left off one of my biggest problems with the editing. The Harley Elevator fight. The decision to use the song Come, Baby, Come was a good one. It's high energy, heavy base and filled with sexual innuendo (perfect for a Harley fight scene). But there was no attempt to sync up the action to the song. Culminating in the line, "Hey, batter, batter, batter... Swing!) Being delivered AFTER the fight is over when she's just standing there. It's shockingly lazy and dumb and it makes me grind my teeth both times I've watched this movie.

It was just "that was in the movie? I like that song. I do not remember it."

That is actually an EXCELLENT example of why the music in SS failed so badly at what GotG succeeded at (and later, arguably, BoP as well). Especially in the first GotG movie, the songs are for the most part burned into my mind with the scenes: Escape (the Pina Colada Song) reminds me of Starlord flying back to the group, Cherry Bomb makes me think of the team walking /almost/ impressively down the corridor, Come and Get Your Love brings me directly back into the super fun title sequence, etc. The Deadpool movie accomplishes this to a degree too, I can't even hear Mr. Sandman without thinking of torture.

THIS IS KATANA, SHE'S GOT MA BACK! Still the absolute worst example of "character development". Fantastic analysis of the mess of editing on this film. SS is a good example of modern blockbusters suffering from studio interference due to either early backlash from trailers or competitors releasing something successful ahead of them. I wish studios would pick directors and crew for their specific talents and not get cold feet halfway through production and try to change everything.

When you watch movie reviews, you get the sense that poor scriptwriting and storytelling is part of the problem and that it has been an issue for a LONG time. Considering that there are movies that had zero studio interference and either turned out as masterpieces or train wrecks, you have to concede to the fact that studio interference on its own isn't always the problem.
@GeneralBolas

Have you ever been responsible for a $175 *Million* dollar project? Where if it fails, your bosses are going to have some very tough questions about it? Where if it fails, they're going to ask why you didn't do more, why you didn't wrangle in the idiots *you hired* to make the film work. It's easy to say that you should just hire someone to do the job and leave them to it. Much like it's easy to say that you should let the tightrope walker walk on their own without interference. But if the tightrope walker is carrying *you*... well, I think we'll forgive you if you want to make some pointed comments about where how he puts his next foot down. Especially if you see that they're about to put that foot down wrong. That being said, the foundation of SS's problems were not studio interference. They were in the highly abbreviated pre-production period, where they only had 6 weeks to get a script. Now, that's *also* the studio's fault, but it's a very different kind of fault from interference in the final cut.
