Strongly recommend traveling to Chongqing, Lijiang, and Dali in Yunnan Province. Chongqing is such a unique city! Can you believe that I took an elevator to the 20th floor or higher, and I could walk straight out to the street from the door outside? And Yunnan is so beautiful, really stunning. These places are worth visiting many times, even for Chinese people.

Hey Lauran, that sweet rice thing is basically 酒酿 ( jiu niang ) and also named differently from different parts of china and alot of people make it instead of buying from shops. There's a dessert called 酒酿圆子 which is that as base with glutinous rice balls and sometimes egg.

You can make “Tian Jiu” yourself. Just cook some sticky rice , cool it to room temperature and mix it with yeasts (you can get the yeasts from grocery store) thoroughly. Put the resulting mixture in a container with a cover (important, the yeasts don’t like oxygen) and leave the container in a warm place (ideally around 37C). The fermentation will get going quickly and it takes a few days for the “ tian jiu” to be ready. You can eat it “as is” or eat the way your friend made it.
