Elvis trying to talk to God here. Just 6 weeks before his death, Elvis was not well, his body riddled with heart pain, added weight, and organs failing, but he decided to go forward with his last tour and honor his commitments to his fans. The result was some incredible music, with some of Elvis best emotions and vocals prowess on full display. This is the greatest live rendition I ever heard of this song. It is very moving, especially if you believe in God. Hard to watch for Elvis fans but "required reading" as this is a legendary and epic performance of a man speaking to his God in his own way, and very much in a public fashion. From southern church choirs to music pop legend.

Even though he was best known to hundreds of millions as a rock artist, he was even better at singing Gospel. He grew up in black and white southern gospel churches of the 1930s and 50s before hitting it big and changing the music world but he never forgot his roots in a poor black and white christian communities during segregation. Its why he speaks to and through hearts on a very unique organic and truth to power way still to this day.

Elvis was the best friend i ever had in my entire life. we met when i was 17 yrs old. I won a radio show contest and the prize was a day with Elvis but our friendship lasted past that one day in time. All the memories of my friend are tucked safe in my heart forever. dancing and singing breaks my heart because i know he is not here anymore my mind understands but my heart never will, i saw him a few weeks before he passed we had a short conversation which i will never share again because people are so nasty and comment hurtful heart breaking things they do not know me but they still can't keep their mouths closed about things they know nothing about. I walk past Graceland everyday. He was so ill but Parker didn't care Elvis was a means to an end to Parker i hated him and i made it my mission to tell him so. .loved your reaction his body failed him but his voice never did.

Gospel was Elvis's passion, As a child he was accepted by & into the Black Church near his home grew up in the church & even sang in the church choir. It was routine after a concert he & his inner circle would go up to his room hit the piano & sing gospel for hours. The only grammy awards he won were for his gospel work. He worked with so many singers The Sweet Inspiration are there as well with him & Whitney Houston's mother was a member of that group. His backing singers on this are JD Sumner ( Baritone ) & The Stamps.. Anther tru;y amazing version of this song is live with Elvis in a Blue Jumpsuit

Amen on wishing he was still here... We all do. I've heard many of his renditions of this song... But here, the guy is in extremely poor health, delivers (IMO) thee best performance of this that he has ever done...

Oh God sweetheart we all wish he was still alive. He may not be here in spirit, but I guarantee by the time the 100th anniversary of his birth comes around in 2035, he will be bigger than ever.

It is heartbreaking to me because it is right before he died. But he sure did give it his operatic gospel all. There is no doubt about that. And those backing singers? The way he has them hold their phrase for so long at the end? I had never noticed that before. That is just stupendous.
