I worked for a company years back, we had this one lady call in freaking out that he 3 year old ac wasn't working. She made such a big deal, they sent me out that day to take a look. Her friend/ handyman built a fully enclosed box around it, because she didn't like the look of it. I'm not joking, literally not one vent hole and door always closed. They argued with me for an hour that I was absolutely wrong and that wasn't the cause of her issues. It was a hot day and the unit was tripping in high discharge. She then (while I was standing there) called into my office to tell them I was wrong and that we needed to send a different tech. The owner called me and told me to leave. We never did work with her again

Years ago we did a new install of a carrier infinity system. Worked great. Next day they called and said it wasn't working and were all pissed off. I got out and the wife had put up trellis and plants against the condenser coil. Completely blocked air flow. I ripped it all out and stacked it about 10 feet away. Had the system running perfectly. When she got home she called the shop all upset I had ripped out her plants. We told her she could have her plants or she could have AC. And we did charge for the service call.

I was in duct cleaning for 32 years. I have seen jobs where the ducts were the cleanest part of the house and they were disgusting. When you smell the stink of the house 50 feet down the driveway from the house it's best to turn it down. I have been sick from going into homes like that and you would probably be shocked to know the profession of the worst homeowners that I've seen. In their work they have to be very clean but they lived in filth.

I hate to be the homeowner that fixes my own hvac, but with KZbin, I've been able to diagnose and replace faulty boards, blower motor, pressure and induction switches on my unit. Ran into an ignitor issue, took it out to clean and verify, but didn't a ring of some sort came out and boy, did me and a few techs have fun trying to figure that one out. Great guys that took care of me.. it took several hours of swapping stuff in and out, cleaning the burners, etc. Finally replaced the ignitor and it worked. The initial tech was somewhat newer, diagnosed as the board, so I swapped that out before the backup senior techs came out. After explaining all I did, and them triple checking the wiring diagram. I think they realized I wasn't an idiot, and I very much appreciated them to the tune of a large cash tip because I know they heard "homeowner tried to service unit" and just wanted to run.

some people always think that AC repairs guys are always trying to screw them. Unfortunately, there are bad service contractors in every business. Good to see there still reputable people who actually care about what they do. That system should have never been shoe-horned in there like that. That whole thing needs to come out and be redone. You did what you could for her. I wasnt to see you how you diagnosed it....maybe on the next one

I see she got some classic R&B 🎶 going in the background. The problem good techs face. Is sometimes a parts changer or crappy tech comes out first. Now the home owner is skeptical. So I like for the customer to watch and I explain as I go. I usually talk extremely confident. It’s how I’ve been able to lock in repeat business.

I had a customer once who was having trouble with their generators handling load changes and load swings. There were three units exactly the same on site and two were always running. The fuel system was a first generation that had a lot of issues if the natural gas was not kept clean. This customer extracted their own fuel from the process in the plant. After much searching and diagnosing including removing the main fuel control valves and disassembling them we found a build up of a black metal residue inside the valves gumming up the works. I even had the plant supervisor and the foreman in charge of maintenance out to look at what we had found with there own employees assisting me. They would not believe that was the issue and they actually accused me of sabotage not to my face but to my boss back at the office in a phone call later. My boss phoned me later at my hotel and was giving me grief over the customer calling him and what they had to say about my attitude. I told my boss that this was my last trip to this site and to NEVER schedule me to ever work on their equipment again. I finished that trip and never went back. One day I was in the office getting ready to go out to another site and my boss came running into the field techs office. "Oh good you are still here I need you to go to the generator site because they are shutdown and losing money and are phoning in a panic to get some one from our office out there right now." I told him to get someone else because they did not want me sabotaging their equipment and did not want me on their site. My Boss looked at me incredulously and turned around and left. He was back in about five minutes telling me that no one on that site had any problem with me going there and I should leave directly. I told him to get someone else because I refuse to work for a customer who calls ME unprofessional and does not trust MY integrity when I was trying to find a difficult problem and they did not like the answer. My boss sent someone else and after working for that outfit for 27 years for me to explain that to this boss made my retirement decision 6 months later that much easier.

A lot of people think when they call a repair person to come to their house and they start digging around they're trying to scam them for some reason but they don't realize in order for you to diagnose the problem you have to dig around and look at stuff. But you're right sometimes it's better to walk away from a job then try to help somebody, because a lot of times the customer doesn't know you're trying to help them, especially if they've had some jack leg come to their house and do crappy work for 20 bucks they think that guy knows what he's doing because he got it working the last time but what they don't realize is he only temporarily fixed it you're there to fix it permanently.

Not HVAC, but towing/road service provider here; I've been in the towing business for 30+ years and have owned my own company for 15 years. This is the only business I know of in that the Police, Fire Dept, Medics, AND the customers all want to try and tell us how to do our job...."load the car this way"....."can you put your chains/straps HERE instead of THERE?"....."let me borrow that tool in your hand & I will unlock my own car"...... at one time or another I have told certain officers, "I don't tell you how to write your citations, so don't tell me how to tow this car"......or the medics, "do I tell you how to start those IV's?.....no?.....then STFU and let ME do this!"...... as for the customers, if they do ANYTHING other than put the keys in my hands and step away to a safe spot within my line of sight, I tell them to go rent a tow truck or rollback or car dolly and tow the car themselves. Me or my staff have one or two people a month that we simply walk away from b/c they want to dictate how we should be loading their vehicle....and THOSE are the people that will call us in a few weeks and swear we damaged something on/around/under their car. Thank GOD for phone technology these days that let us document everything before we begin to load/unload. We send it directly to our dispatch and it's entered into the call-log, so it's date/time stamped. I've even put dash-cams in our trucks. Too many people trying to win that "commercial vehicle lottery" these days.

The air filter is a joke, how big is that house ? Im going to make an assumption based on the house next door and say the avg house size is 1200 to 1400sq? Now I live in western N.Y I see thats a heat pump , not sure where in the south this is , what your design temp is , but im going to go out on a limb and say that thing is way oversized , esp looking at the grossly undersized return. I got to say the compressor sounds off Its hard see what the pressures where, but they appeared close like no compression. Do you think the compressure was shot? what was your amp draw? it almost sounded like the compressor was pumping down at times. I see burn marks on the evap door , think they wrapped the service valves when they brazed it in? When she said the last guy who was here, I thought she was going to say he was still in there lol. They must have assembled that one in the room. un real! good call thought GTFO of there. She can call Hack Inc. to come back and fix it. On those calls you have to wonder what else they cut corners on, and if its a mismatch breaker and catches fire , whoever the last guy , you dont want it to be you.

She obviously doesn't know a lot about the system and wants it to be repaired without spending loads of money. Personally I would probably tell her I can take it all apart but its going to cost extra. I know its frustrating to hear a customer trying to tell you how to do your job, but I don't think it was done with any ill intent.

I had a call at a grocery store where the customer wanted me to replace the water filters for their convection steam oven. They were located up 20 feet in a crawl space. I found that the only way to get to them was to walk across the top of the wood fired pizza oven that was covered with 6 inches of sand for insulation. Then I would have to jump a 3 foot crevasse to land on a ledge. I told them it was unserviceable. They said the last guy did it. I said I hope you still have his number.

Wow. Everyone knows when you install filters for any equipment whether it be for a steamer, ice maker or beverage machine, you put the filter within 5ft of the unit. Guy who did that must have loved billing them 4 hrs to replace filters. If they didn't want to look at them then they should build a damn cabinet!

You can do that if you work for a company. I've done it a number of times, with awkward managers occasionally at the sites I look after. Nice as pie to me now. It took a few years mind i think they had issues from other engineers. I'm glad I came away from A/C in fairness and do Refrigeration now. Finding anyone decent in the UK is a minefield

@@Straight_White_Fatherly_Figure You'd be surprised how many people that work on aircraft don't know Jack about working on other stuff. I knew lots of aircraft mechanics that couldn't work on their own cars when I was in the Air Force. I'm talking stripping spark plug threads because they're trying to tighten it like a 440 head bolt.

@@414Chevy Years ago I got called out to a fireplace that wouldn't fire and client was an electrical engineer. I know because upon entering it was something like "Hi, I'm mr smith, my fireplace is broken. I know its not the electronics because I'm an electrical engineer". I nodded and smiled, opened up the panel on his fireplace as he went on and on about how he had tried to fix it, and had gone over the wiring schematic and did I want to see the schematic and it must be this or that. I politely declined as I looked underneath. I almost immediately noticed one of the wiring harnesses was plugged into the wrong part of the burner control module. So I unplugged it (as he watched), plugged it into the correct place, turned his fireplace on and said OK, well it's fixed. I think the phrase is Humble Pie? His wife absolutely loved it.

Whenever a HVAC tech enters my home to work on my system, I say hello, ask them if they need anything, and let them know I'm around if they need any information. Then I just let them do their work while I'm in another room. To this day, I've never had any issues. I also work in the service field (Not in HVAC), and know how miserable it can be if a customer is breathing down the neck.

Yeah, went to a call a month ago and was met by the “I went to school for Hvac, but didn’t finish” guy. After he followed me around trying to tell me how to do my job, I diagnosed a bad defrost board. He then informed me that the outside unit had nothing to do with the inside unit. I looked at him with a smile and told him “ Obviously you know how to do this and you no longer in need of my services” I packed up my stuff and left. His wife called me 10 minutes later begging me to return and letting me know she kicked him out the house until I leave. I went and grabbed a board and had her up and going.
