This one has come completely out of the blue - after taking his Nintendo 2DS, or an equivalent device, on the school bus with him every day for the last 6 years, we've been told Andy is no longer allowed to take it with him, effective immediately, and that he won't be allowed on the bus if he insists on having it with him. For those who've been following for a while and know how much Andy relies on his 2DS to manage his anxiety and process the world around him, you can understand why this is such a big deal! To be given no notice and have no opportunity to prepare him for it is even worse...

ABOUT KEVIN CHAPMAN
Hi, I'm Kevin Chapman, a full-time KZbinr, author, podcaster, speaker and occasional teacher from Peterborough, UK. As part of my daily vlog I release new videos every day at 5pm UK time with topics including life as an autism family, conventions and geek culture, technology, education and tutorials and entrepreneurship.
When I left my full-time as a Computer Science teacher in July 2017, my partner, Anna, was trapped in our house by our son Andy, who is autistic and had refused to go to school for 18 months. Our daughters Lucy and Amy and our dog Dave hardly saw me because I was always working to try and solve all our problems! Today I'm a full-time content creator who's always at home when my kids get home from school (all our kids!) and Anna has been able to return to university. This channel is the story of my family's ongoing journey as family vloggers! Previously known as lollujo Vlogs.

Kev, I’ve been listening to you for three four years now but have only recently found this vlog/learned about Andy. It’s astonishing how much difficulty you have been through with Andy with other professionals. If you ever need legal help, feel free to message me as a senior manager at one of the largest legal firms in the county. I have a sister who is a SEN senior in a council. Please ask me for help, they are discriminating against your family.

'Dave effectively told us he is not allowed on the bus tomorrow' I thought you meant Dave the dog... haha it took a while to clock that. Well, that is not very good... just when we thought progress would be permanent (ish). Oh dear, odd that the new bus PA fed it to the council, not you guys or the school.

I’ve got autism and really isn’t easy for someone like me to adapt to something that we’ve done for a long time. The littlest change makes me go off on one. I really wish people would just stop being petty about little thing like that. Autism and mental health isn’t going away just because people think it’s not real thing. Well they are wrong it’s real for those who have it and the people who care for them. Love that you are trying to get awareness out there. Thank you so much. 🙂🙏🏻

My mum had so much trouble with transport for my brother a few years ago, basically the council wouldn't give him transport to his special needs school, which is only 5.1 miles away, because apparently the one that was 4.1 miles away was the most suitable for him (it wasnt, he was non-verbal at the time and the closer school only take kids who can communicate), she took it to the local papers and radio, and fought so hard for so long and finally got it. Taking him 5 miles everyday really put stress on everyone because me and my other brother sometimes needed taking to our high school, which couldnt happen when she had to take the youngest to his special needs school. Now everything is a lot happier and stress free and he goes on his bus happily every morning. But keep fighting Kev, you can do this.

My school put up a fuss when they told me they were practicing stim suppression, e.g. making our autistic son stop flapping his arms or tapping his head when he gets flustered. They said that it was a standard ABA therapy practice, to which I responded "well, maybe ABA is the problem." It's been an ongoing thing. I am not sure we will keep him in this school next year.
@malikaibass2609
@malikaibass2609 6 жыл бұрын
As an autistic person, i highly support your choice getting your son out of there. ABA is almost always abusive and plenty of autistic adults have written and shared about the long term harm it caused them but all aba therapists care about is trying to make us not autistic through brainwashing and torture.

I am a bus enthusiast and it helps me keep occupied and relaxed with ADHD (I know it's not the same) but I film the buses and also get pictures and upload them onto sites like Flickr. I have only ever had one issue with a police officer asking if I'm filming them and I simply shew him the footage and he got on with his day, it's ridiculous how they can't let Andy keep himself relaxed and keep his DS as a safety bubble

I'm a school worker in the US, primarily in the SpEd department. At first I was thinking why isn't this in his IEP (Individualized Education Program for the States). I was relieved to hear that it is in his plan, because they can get in BIG trouble if they don't follow through with that. In my school, the bus driver or whoever made that decision, would not be able to make that call. To make any sort of changes to his IEP, they would have to have a meeting involving his teachers, any specialists that work with him, and you guys. This school needs to be very careful!

The thing that would blow my mind, is that they haven’t even thought to work out either a compromise, or come up with a practical plan such as them being allowed to delete his footage at the end of the school day. This school’s inability to communicate effectively with you, has got to be worrying for you to trust their ability; to provide a good learning environment for Andy.

The DS is Andy's diary where he processes the world around him. I write letters to friends when in public to lower my anxiety or i send texts and emails to friends. None of this stuff i do will invade anyones privacy any more than Andy's DS does. It is Andy's way to cope. Why on earth would it be in Andy's best interests to take his DS off him when traveling on the bus has been a step towards him getting to school in a way that doesnt involve the cost of his individual transport.

Would it be an option to explain the situation to the parents of the other children, explain that they're not being filmed but are in the vicinity of him filming, and get consent from the parents to allow Andy to film? Having worked with children and done safeguarding training, I was under the impression that it's a safeguarding issue if an adult is filming, ie, you filming Andy getting on the bus with other kids in the background. I work at a kids summer camp and the staff are not allowed to take photos of the kids on our phones, only on the official camp camera, which parents have consented to. However if kids want to take pictures with their friends on their own phones then there's nothing we can do about that, except tell them they're not allowed on social media cause they're under 13 (which they completely ignore anyway but we're supposed to say something if we see). In my opinion, if the parents of the other children on the bus are aware and understand the situation and give consent for Andy to film their children (even if he doesn't actually film them, he still has consent), there shouldn't be an issue.

It's so bizarre because you know 100% that the first people to complain and raise issue with Andy having a meltdown would be the bus driver, pa and then the school because it goes further than just on the bus. He doesn't have it on the bus, he doesn't have it in school. It'll affect everything. In my opinion its the whole council money saying malarkey but even i, someone with no political or large-sum budgeting job, knows that if they paid for a couple of people to go through even minimal training then it'd save so many problems and probably a lot of money. It's a knock on affect that will not only go from an issue with him not having the DS on the bus but then his schooling, his home life, potentially even his personal well-being in that he could start rejecting food and medicine. Thats a huge long shot i know but its a possibility and when its purely a DS that he doesn't use to film footage for a public domain, its purely personal use that not even his parents see before its deleted, is just mind blowing and unnecessary. They'd have one hell of a shock if they were in a position where Andy went into meltdown or if they had other autistic children who could potentially be extremely agitated, overwhelmed and/or disruptive. They've been let off massively with how well Andy has soldiered on and should count their lucky stars that the only issue they can scrape from this barrel is a bit of DS footage that is deleted with 8 odd hours. A tiny bit of understanding and perspective would go a hell of a long way and save everyone - including the person that made this decision all of the bother of rectifying it or dealing with the consequences.

Confidentiality causes way more harm than good... For example abusers can move across county boarders to avoid social services because different county's aren't allowed to share information because confidentiality... Hosptials won't tell nursing homes about their own patients... Again same thing. Social care/education is all just about people protecting their backs, service users are rarely considered..... This is just another example of that. It's nothing about people, just companys and the nannny state doing damage control. As long as it looks like people are cared for that's all that matters to the professionals and CQC and the council.

To play Devil's Advocate, this again feels like a situation that could have and should have been dealt with better through conversation. Rather than the bus driver rudely approaching you, or Andy's PA approaching you before reporting Andy, both of them could have spoken to you first. Even more, the school could have asked to have a sit-down meeting with you and Anna so that you can all come to the table and create a solution that works well for everyone.

I totally agree!!! I too understand that recording devices around other kids is not really legal-but Andy and other kids with Autism/Asperger’s need time to adjust with a change of routine!! I’m not sure how to totally look after both sides of the coin on such short notice-If you had known about it earlier, you could have at least started to plant the idea in Andy’s mind, and started working on the issue. They (council/school/etc.) should be communicating better with you!!! Would a 3-6 monthly meeting (rather than yearly) with his social worker/school/county/council (transport)/others involved in Andy’s care help with giving you guys time to plan change with Andy/make sure his needs are met/everyone on the same page? I’m sure you could request it (like a parent teacher interview)-just an idea!

I hope you can come to some sort of compromise that will work for everyone especially Andy.

I have a suggestio. Bye suggestion is sad you could have him forget him to try and listen to music when he is on the bus. I listen to music on the bus sometimes and it really helped. That would be my suggestion. And explain to them as long as he's listening to music or whatever he's not recording or anything.

I kind of find it ironic that they won't let him have his DS on the bus because in a typical child teenager 14 year old school bus they have their phones out they have their video cameras Facebook KZbin Instagram whatever else and they take videos and post stuff I mean how do you think the the kid funny things or the the teacher reaction kind of things are put on KZbin? And why should it matter if he has it if that's what he uses to help him process during the day then why should it matter I mean come on think about it kids playing on the phone all the time it's no different.

The way I see it, this situation is no different than someone bringing an emotional support animal on the bus.

Please remember that THEY don't know Andy as well as you and I and everyone else here does. They don't know that what he's really recording is buses and for all they know, he may have been recording sensitive information even though we know he's not. They are just following protocol at the end of the day. Then again, hit may be time to arrange the taxi again.

The whole situation with Andy is horrible but I completely understand the decision they make. You know that nothing happens with the footage but the other parents don’t have that security. I would feel very uncomfortable if my vulnerable child was being filmed, even inadvertently. Even if the camera was not pointed on me, my anxiety would cause me to feel very uncomfortable with the situation. Unfortunately, the it’s just not possible to cater to the individual needs of everybody.

Transport saturation round to the principle is that sprang it on you he won’t be able to cope he might surprise everyone and take it in his stride but why take the risk when he has done it for a really really long time

may i suggest something kev? Are you able yo get a hold of the footage he records with his DS? If you can show them what he is recording. Its horrible to hear this happening. I would advise going to your local MP to get more help with the individual transport.

What is wrong with people now a days? Simple little things bothers someone. This device makes Andy comfortable to coexist in this world. He doesn't annoy people with it what's the problem. geez this issue is so petty it's ridiculous. I hope everything works out for you Kev..

sorry what I said does not make sense. My voice input makes things sound really goofy. What I meant to say was have them let him at least bring music on the bus that he can listen to. Also I do butter on Long bus rides if I have my CD player for my phone. I had a similar problem where I put my stuff away

It's sadly not just that they have no understanding of autism, it's that they don't want to learn more about it. It's not like they haven't had a myriad opportunities to learn.

I feel for you I really do, so 1 new PA wants a super badge cos they just started on the job & has personally caused all this problem for you!!! , a similar thing happened to me when a new carer started & she had to have everything just so & investigate / tie up lose ends etc, it resulted in me losing care money set aside for my personal care after serious head surgeries I was to under go, I was awarded & the money was in the bank all set & ready to go towards the after care that I would need, What happened was somehow somewhere along the line the council changed there mind in how long it could be banked without being used, & we were just slightly over that time, so we lost the lot a week before the 1st of my major head surgeries....... So Yh I feel for you, although slightly different scenario.....
