Andy is off to respite care again, and we thought that was a good opportunity to answer some of the questions we regularly get asked about respite care, including what it is, what he does there and whether or not he enjoys it. The respite care discussion starts at 8:32 if that's what you're here for!

ABOUT KEVIN CHAPMAN
Hi, I'm Kevin Chapman, a full-time KZbinr, author, podcaster, speaker and occasional teacher from Peterborough, UK. As part of my daily vlog I release new videos every day at 5pm UK time with topics including life as an autism family, conventions and geek culture, technology, education and tutorials and entrepreneurship.
When I left my full-time as a Computer Science teacher in July 2017, my partner, Anna, was trapped in our house by our son Andy, who is autistic and had refused to go to school for 18 months. Our daughters Lucy and Amy and our dog Dave hardly saw me because I was always working to try and solve all our problems! Today I'm a full-time content creator who's always at home when my kids get home from school (all our kids!) and Anna has been able to return to university. This channel is the story of my family's ongoing journey as family vloggers! Previously known as lollujo Vlogs.

respite seems not too different from other kids his age in terms of not spending everyday at home with his parents. usually people his age would be sleeping at friends or going on short trips away from home so it’s great that he has something similar

We have a respite provider that comes in to help give my husband a break so he can focus on his computer or drawing while I’m at work. We don’t trust many people to watch her alone because she can’t tell us what happens.

I think all parents want a break occasionally and all children, especially teenagers, want a break from their parents even the best parents in the world. It sounds like everyone involved is having a blast.

I've worked in a respite care home for children with disabilities including Autism for 2 years and absolutely love it. Currently applying for a Team Leader role, as for what a respite care home is, you've summed it up brilliantly, so many of the parents could and should get more, but there really isn't enough money. Have you thought about instead of him having extra hours like the SW is pushing for, to ask for PA hours instead funded through Direct Payments? It'd be cheaper than the over nights, so they'd probably go for it plus Andy would still get a positive role model and gain more independence and less reliance on you and yet he wouldn't be away for the whole night. PA's can even just come into the home and help with the morning routines etc etc. As for "never getting a lie in" having worked in this home I have a new appreciation for what families have to do. I've had children get up at 3am and they're ready for the day, sometimes this means I have to get up, because I sleep at work to support the night staff should a young person get up, depending on their needs I may need to be up. I hope he loves his respite home like the children I support do. I was wondering if you know how many children go to his? We have just over 40 children attending ours at the moment, it's 6 bedrooms all ground floor. We have 3 bedrooms with profiling beds that move up and down etc etc, plus 2 "safe space" beds, which are like a big crib that they can't leave, then 3 usual divan beds. Currently I'm making a DVD version of the Young Persons Guide for our care home which is currently only written in PECS which not all of our children can respond to. I have worn my "Different is not broken" t-shirt to work, and took my mug in, which went down a treat with the registered manager ;D

I've never really liked the DC films as much as marvel, being more serious and dark (rather than the nice balance of seriousness and comedy that marvel has) but recently they've been doing an excellent job with wonder woman and aquaman! Can't wait to see what comes next from DC

My mum use to offer respite care for children with special needs, she's looked after children with autism, down syndrome and a set of twins who's mum had extra needs. She now looks after my lad for a weekend as he's autistic and gives me somewhat of a break as I still have my youngest to look after unless I can time it that they're both away at same time, which only happened once last year! I only thing is, hardly have any friends I can go out with, cinema is miles away and I usually just end up slobbing the weekend away!

Hi Riley, I hope you're successful! I'm not sure where you are in the country, but they have adults respite available with a company called "progress care", which have a placement called "Stourbridge house" which is near Wolverhampton. Some of it is children, but some is young adults. If the issue you're getting from your SW is related to "there are no homes available" they are lying and won't fund the transport. I know for a fact that if the need is there and the placement is available they have to get you there, we had young people come to us from 100+ miles away. (I'm not at Stourbridge house, I work for another company)

@TheKellyGreen
@TheKellyGreen 5 жыл бұрын
See danger? Do you mean does he have a concept of fear? I have a son similar to Andy. He doesn't have a "standard" concept of fear ie he doesn't understand playing in the street is dangerous, but he is terrified of most foods so will only allow a very small few to be anywhere near him. It's not a sense of no danger, but what's dangerous is just different. The long and short answer to all questions like this are autistic brains are just wired differently. The only person who can give you a direct answer is the person themselves, and in my sons case and Andys, they just can't quite do that, so we do our best to guess. Knowing why is nearly impossible to answer.
