Well, in my opinion Jaguar just did it right with thier design language in the past ten years. Yes the older ones are more iconic, but as the first XF was introduced back in 2008, I was really in love with it. I´m living in germany, so cars like AUdi, Mercedes and BMW are very often and kinda boring. Seeing cars like those Jaguars is a pleasure.

You may wonder how I know this. I am an Engineer myself, and during my career I worked in automotive R and D. Beside Rolls Royce Range Rover and a stint at Mercedes in Munich, I had the honour to develope the prototype for the Jaguar XK8. As a life long petrol head and Jaguar fan, I had the privilege of walking in the footsteps of giants.

Hi Wizard. I think the styling of the XJ was affected by European pedestrian collision rules that made front ends very upright and lost many hood ornaments. It would be nice if they find a way to get back to that classic look.

They tried to retain the 'old' look with the X-type & S-type and got slammed for it. But also when asking yourself does this look like a new this, that or other. Realise that you are comparing design followers with design leaders. This car was released in 2009. Look at other 2009 designs to realise Jaguar was ahead of the curve.

The X350 also got the 400bhp supercharged V8, and there's a lot more room in front of the diesel than the V8, so I don't think that the need for cooling is the reason.

This is the first time I have left a comment, I currently own a 2013 jaguar xf, its now done over 200kand it still runs like a limousine, I've had a few problems but I'm not writing out cheques for failing items like you suggest I could expect, my previous car was a jaguar x type 240 k and no problems,this car is still in daily use,I love them and I'm proud to drive an English car..

As far as the front end it does in certain areas look like other lesser cars but thats where it ends. The rear is stunning, setting it apart from everything. The tail lights for instance were designed to replicate the Jaguars claws. The top with its 2 blacked out glass sunroofs gets its cues from a yacht's upper deck. Looking at it from the side is a Jaguar in motion. The L from XJL refers to long wheelbase giving the rear passengers 5 inches of extra leg room. Top that off with the maroonish shade of Caviar Metalic and you have an automobile that exudes ever current style and class. Also at no extra cost are the never-ending compliments!

The plastic C pillars are silly and poorly integrated with the rear windscreen despite being intended to make it look like it wraps around. It does look great from the back otherwise thought

We want to pay a fair price. We have to eat, they have to eat. We all have bills to pay. They have to charge a fair price to keep the lights on and employees paid well AND happy to keep working there. But they know they can't gouge their customers because it's not the one time business they are after. It's the continued relationship they can establish that the customer will come back for more business as scheduled and unscheduled maintenance which makes the business sustainable.

I not that long ago was at Avis rental at the San Francisco airport where they didnt have the car I had reserved so they offered a list of others they had sitting… he rattles off the ehhhh mehhh list and I caught “Jaguar XJ” as hes talking. Wait, hold up, an XJ sitting here? Sign me up on it. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by how well it ate up highway miles and while from the front it might look like others, the side profile and rear is gorgeous. Its a nicer car than you would expect. The XJ and Genesis G90 both do the same thing very well, cruise while feeling like a bigger car in the best ways. The XJs are nice cars.

Fun fact: the Captains and Air Boss chairs on the Royal Navy Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers are Racing Style chairs made by Jaguar and have their logo on them. The Captain also has a F-Type on board as their vehicle.

Mrs Wizard, it's known as the 'leaping cat' not the leaping Leopold. Interesting factoid, Jaguar where originally called Swallow side-cars Limited (they started, like Rolls-Royce) making side-cars for motorcycles. They shortened this to SS, with the pre-war cars being the SS90 (Horsepower) and the jaw droppingly beautiful SS100. During the War they made the alluminium skin panels for Spitfires and Typhoons. After the War, Sir William held a meeting in the pub with his Engineers and stated that the SS brand didn't sit well after the atrocities committed by the ShutzStaffel (SS) during the war, so a name change was needed. Sir William rather liked the idea of naming the Company after a big cat which he viewed as sleek, elegant and fast. and proposed the name of Puma. One of his Engineer's piped up and said that the name Jaguar was far more sexy, and with a rye smile, Sir William agreed and a legend was born!

The rear lights are designed as Jaguar Claws. I worked at Jaguar Castle Bromwich England up until 2016 as a Quality Inspector and i Loved these cars. The best i ever saw was the R model in Italian Racing Red with Black Alloy wheels.

I have a 2009 XJ8, and it’s the last year of the classic, traditionally styled Jaguar. I do think mine looks a thousand times more beautiful than the newer style. But the car wizard is right about the interior. The newer XJ interior is in a class by itself. And that supercharged 5.0 will run circles around my non-supercharged 4.2. The 4.2 is still plenty fast, however. My 2009 has over 140,000 miles on it. And it has required a little bit of work. A previous owner switched the air suspension over to coilovers, a common modification that makes the car much more reliable. I’ve had to replace the upper control arms and tie rod ends on the front suspension. And the thermostat housing started self destructing, requiring a new thermostat and housing. While I was in there, I replaced the water pump, as that is a known weak spot, as well as some hard to reach hoses that were accessible when I had the intake manifold off. Overall, I have found Jaguar’s reputation for being unreliable has been greatly exaggerated, and I will hop in this car and take it anywhere. I put around 90 miles a day on it during my drive to work. Easily one of my favorite cars I’ve owned. And mine has the leaping Jaguar (not leopard 😄) on the hood.

The foam on the strut is used for ride comfort and acoustic improvement. That stuff is used as a bump stop on lots of more expensive cars and works pretty well and is durable if applied correctly (mainly keep away from dust and dirt)

232,000 miles on my Audi A6 3.0TDi Avant - owned since new (2007). I have never changed a single thing anywhere in the drivetrain apart from tyres, pads and discs - every suspension component is original..... EVERY ONE. And yes, still passes its MOT (I'm in the UK) every year, failing last year for the first time ever due to a clogged up seatbelt buckle in the back (bloody dog fur!!!). We hear this all the time with US market European cars, yet we don't get the same issues at all over here. My girlfriend has a 2014 Audi A3 Cabriolet 2.0TDi from new with about 125,000 miles, and though the pads have been changed once in that time, I think she still has the same brake discs (and again, FAULTLESS on everything else all these years).

That's exactly how we work. We do and appraisal and then it's up to the customer what they get done. We usually set the list out as Phase 1 priority jobs and then a phase 2 list (not so urgent) All depends on customer's budget. We have a 3 month waiting list so we must be doing something right ✅ 😅

Cheap is more expensive in the long run. It can even be a hell of a lot more expensive since cheap mechanics on a Jag WILL destroy the things they work on, or at least worsen the issue. Id rather pay €120 an hour for an expert charging two hours than some idiots at €40 an hour charging for 6 hours guesswork and wasting €400 of parts that didnt need replacing anyways. And still not solve the issue...

I have kept my 2015 Subaru because the general styling of any newer alternatives is not much different from mine. I DO miss the days when a 'New Model Year' was released in the autumn and my dad would take us along to check things out. MY dream car has a pre-World War II Bentley body mounted on a modern dual-motor electric drive chassis with modern suspension and braking. Your wife's tour of the Jag interior rings true: for me, when I DRIVE, I see the dash and interior and feel the luxury of quality seating. If the car delivers an all-day driving experience, that tops most 'look-alike' styling concerns these days.

Had an XJL until recently. Top of the range. Loved it! No faults. Had the V6 diesel and got up to 59 mpg on a motorway run. (UK not US gallons). Wish I still had it.

@@dingdong2103 Everyone regrets selling their XJ. After putting 166,000 miles on my 2006 XJ Super V8, I got nervous about possible future service costs and traded it in on a used S600. Arguably a better car, but not as enjoyable to drive, and not nearly as beautiful. Every time I walked up to my XJ it was an occasion.

Beautiful interior! The reason it doesn't look like anything is the original buyer selected a boring-as color. Need to get this car in a deep blue, green, red etc ... or even white or something if that's your thing. My first car, first oil change went to Jiffy Lube. I'm sitting in the waiting room, this kid comes out with a thick belt, and shows me that there's tiny cracks in it and that it needs replacing (you could have hung an elephant off this thing). It was the belt for the AC. I told him to replace it. Oil change took 3 hours. NEVER GO TO A JIFFY LUBE!

I have the UK version XJ Sport 3.0 diesel 2019 twin turbo 700 Nm torque & 300 BHP , pity the yanks didn't get that car as its awesome ...............Superb performance and 45 Miles per gallon. My car is the face lift version with J blade headlights and upgrades through out the car. it was £ 81,000 new with all the options ticked. To me its the best Jag ever.

Hi Mr Wizard, really enjoy your videos and this one in particular pursuaded me to subscribe ! My dad had a couple of MKII's & a MK10 in the late 60's early 70's, I kept pestering him as a kid to get a Jag ! Totally agree on the looks and love your XJ12 and the final generation, X350 of that shape. I'd love to get one of those, but as a one parent one daughter family in the UK, can't really justify such a large gas guzzler. I make do with one of your pet hates, a Mini Cooper S. It's good to see Mrs Wizard joining in the videos however, I also never heard the mascot called a leopard, its' either a leaping cat or Jagwaar 🙂

XJ L ULTIMATE owner here, nice ride. New XJ grew on me, still love the classic Jags and former original XKR owner too. Got to remember X351 was designed to appeal to a different market. Disagree regarding front end, there's not a lot looks like it from the front (in the UK at least, maybe more in the US) and bear in mind the J-blade headlights are pretty distinctive. I like the rear end from 3/4 view but bit boring from the back. Overall it's a great car apart from fuel economy, mine had 510bhp stock, now chipped. It's scary quick! I'm about to do the brakes on mine actually too so a nice reminder of what I'm looking at!

Just rebuilt my front suspension on the exact same car. Took me a couple days but was well worth the results and the money saved. Was you able to replace the passenger side upper control arm without removing the fuse box? I was able to. H.P. is 470.

My F-Type isn't that traditional "design language" of Jaguar past, but I would argue it is unique and iconic. I like the newer Jag look, except for the revised headlights of the F-Type 2022+ model years.

I've always loved Jags, we've had them in and around the family, but I'm glad they've moved on styling-wise, the last generation XJ, the S-type, and whatever the Mondeo in drag Jag was called ( I forget), were all retro styled, I liked the XJ, but the rest just held Jag back, reliving the glory days, they needed to move on, I think they've done a good job although the side profile of the XJL looks massive. Jags have always been renown for their ride, maybe the crappy spring cushioning is part of that reason?

I have the leaping Jag on my hood, but mines is a 2014 Jaguar XJR though. I love the design of this car inside and outside.

After working in the automotive industry for most of my life, I can concur with the Car Wizard. As a mechanic (and not just a parts-changer), you are being paid to repair/replace what the customer requests, and aside from pointing out (usually in the form of an estimate) any other areas which may need attention-- especially if they are safety related, you do what is requested and do it to the best of your ability. After all, the shop you work for is responsible for any warranty on your work... and "taking care" of items that you happen to notice just because you are able to fix them opens you up to a world of liability. This is a litigious society we live in, and good deeds can come back to bite you right in the arse!

Wow, just looking at all that hardware underneath....the size and thickness of the lower control arms and the subframe, etc....and they are aluminum, not steel. The diff looks almost truck-sized too. No wonder these things were like $90K a decade ago. They appear to have been built like tanks----like 90s Mercedes' overbuilt. I bet that thing will last forever if cared for.

except that all the plastic will go brittle & fall off. I had a XK8 and the wiring in engine bay had all gone brittle, you had to be super careful doing any work else it would crack. sold it & bought a MX5 best change I ever did.

@@calthorp yeah because an mx5 is nothing like an xk8 and lacks almost all features an xk8 has, smooth comfortable quiet ride quality, torque, etc. not a GT

@@h7pubg The MX5 NC rs does lack a lot of the features & comfort, but when I go out to use it every few weeks it starts & nothing goes wrong with it. I drive it like I stole it & with the savings on repairs I was able to afford lots of upgrades.

@@calthorp never heard of engine bay wiring disintegrating like that, since they didn’t use biodegradable wiring harnesses like mercedes did at the time, however the cooling hoses and other plastic parts do go brittle, my xk8 is very reliable but every now and then when it breaks it is more expensive to repair than a miata would be, however i class them on totally different levels of car, neither worse than the other just good at different things and incomparable

You are right with the 100k mile mark on European cars. Used to drive 05 VW passat and they are know for burning oil pass 100k miles. Same thing with audi A6 from that era. Not to mention all the broken electronics.
