It feels like nearly all of the trees I see on drip have this problem, where emitters are placed near the trunk and never moved out near the drip line as the tree grows. Cities in the Phoenix metro have goals to drastically increase tree cover but crews maintaining trees seem to lack the knowledge.

Deep root irrigation stakes also should be planted away from the tree and must be moved every few years as the canopy grows.

Recently found your channel and loving the informative videos. Thank you! I'm in Maricopa AZ but I grew up in QC. I have a question. When I bought my house, there are well established older, pretty big trees 10-15 yrs old. There's an Ash in one corner. The wall is damaged in a couple places. I've started deep watering about once a week on the outer perimeter of the tree, leaving the hose on trickle all day. It's looking rough after the summer, with most of the leaves with burned edges. Any suggestions? I had an arborist out and his suggestion was to cover outer perimeter of tree with compost and mulch. My second tree is a Chinese Elm in another corner, which is taller than my 2 story house. It looks healthy rn and gets watered like the Ash. How should I change watering in winter, as far as frequency? The final tree is a Mesquite which I've never watered. It was established when I bought my house and I was told supplemental watering wasn't necessary. It's also huge, and grows fast between trimmings. Should I be watering it? I'm not sure what type it is but it does drop pods. Any tips you can offer? Tia!

@@qctropicals whoahh !!! So in summer deep water once in a while, shallow daily? For shallow roots mulching can reduce water frequency right ?

Thanks for the video, it's something that is highly needed. In every FB group I belong to people argue about watering. I have stone fruit trees and citrus. Some say water short intervals multiple times a day every day others say water once every 10 days (or whatever the magic # is). I prefer to deep water but I also would like to have that automated since I suck at remembering to water things by hose. What emitters would you use to automate the process? Currently I'm using the adjustable mushroom bubblers. I'm open to any suggestions . A video about how to properly set up irrigation for trees would be awesome too...just an idea :)

if anyone tells you exactly how often to water a tree, they know nothing about watering. Do not listen to them. I have a few irrigation videos in my channel.

Question. I would like to know, you said you water deep rooted trees for hours, at what rate are you watering them? I am usually watering my new figs and mulberries about every three days. I water with a hose because I haven’t set up my system yet so I just make sure it’s running fast enough so I’m not boiling the roots with hot water from the hose so about an hour for each tree. They were all started from cuttings last fall so they are still babies. They do have lots of mulch and some have pallet tepee over them to avoid sun scald. It is Texas after all. Thank you for the information about the loquat tree having a shallow fibrous root system. Now I know why I have so much trouble getting them to thrive in my south Texas summers.

I'm hotter here than you are. You need consistent watering which is impossible to do by hand. When I deep water, most of my trees have either 1 or 2 4ph emitter each. Worst thing that can happen if you over do it is you waste a bit of water. Better to do that than to under water.

@@samueljaramillo4221watering with a slow emitter for a longer time will not take much water but will be much more effective than high volume sprinklers for a shorter time. Watering can also be less frequent when the plants are watered deeply.
