I really appreciate your gardening skill. You teach how to think about how your plant is performing. That's helpful!

I have covert gopher tunnels..Not all gophers show signs of being there.. They are smart little creatures once they know they are being targeted.. Perhaps even living covertly under the tree..They divert the water in a tunnel away from the root ball so they can continusly access it. They have tunneling under many of my garden plants now, and can tell because when I water, it goes right down like its dissappearing, and if I push down around the plant, the ground slightly depresses if its wet..another sign is the plant is not thriving and wilts intermittenly throughout the day .. I use a metal probe ( about 1 1/2 to 2 ft long) that I push down around the root ball at a angle.. If I hit a void I investigate more.. Right now I am trying the solar powered deterrant spikes.. They use a high frequency to ward off the gophers..Hopefully it will work..

It's easier to see in veggies but showing the difference in heat wilt and thirst wilt has been a game changer in my garden

How far from the tree do you put the dripper?.. does it depend on the size of the tree?

For established trees, anywhere around the canopy is ok. New trees in ground, next to the trunk for the first year.

Your lucky to have that property with water like that, i have clay soil too. I wish it would rain here had like a minute of sprinkles. My lsu purple fig is flourishing and the kadota in a container still is quickly outgrowing its pot, but other fig from one green world its not doing well, the other one the sent to replace the first one is dead. So ive gotten better at keeping healthy ones alive :)

Nearby pines trees might steel water from the area. Why don't you get rid of them?
@qctropicals6 ай бұрын
That's a myth. Really get rid of the beautiful pine trees?. I have many more plants under the pine trees on the other side doing just fine with the watering I had been giving the.

Another solution maybe ……..move the tree. Or maybe mix some clay in the area next to the tree.
@qctropicals6 ай бұрын
how would mixing clay next to the area water the roots several feet below ground?

I water my trees by hauling buckets if water 3 gallons in a five gallon bucket . What a pain. So I prepare my tree holes with lining plastic say six inches below the root zone with some root directeddown in to one plastic lined level I can't we worry about drowning the roots and in the past two years haven't seen any ill effect of root rot . Yellow leaves for interest
@qctropicals6 ай бұрын
roots probably tore thru that plastic already. You need a drip system :)
