A look into the history and music of a band that are... dare I say... quite underrated?
Not From There could easily be summarised overall as 'alternative rock', but their ever-changing approach makes them harder to fit into more detailed sub-genres. Their loudest moments could fit under labels like post-punk, post-hardcore and noise rock, but their fondness of grooves and peculiar yet catchy melodies eventually shifted their music in a direction that their frontman labeled "cosmic new-age avant-garde pop".
Their single 'Sich Öffnen' became a cult underground hit thanks to high airplay on national broadcaster Triple J, but it was more recent nostalgic write-ups by Double J that encouraged me to listen to this band. Unfortunately, I feel very much in a minority of millennials and younger who are even aware of Not From There, let alone would call themselves fans - I hope that this video will help rectify that at least a little.
