The plaintiffs hired the defendant to fix a hole in their roof. However, the plaintiffs gave the defendant money to buy materials, but he never did the job, so they’re suing. The defendant insists he told them he would work on the job when he had some time since contracting is his side hustle, but the plaintiffs are just being impatient.

As the son of a contractor, cases like this make me sick. They also make me remind my father to always have his paperwork in order and keep good records just in case of lunatic clients. In all of his years of contracting, he's only had trouble with just one client. Woman was a nutjob. Former repeat client of his who suddenly wasn't happy with his last job and demanded ludicrous amounts of money to go away.

They received their money. That is how the People's Court worked. It came out of the pay for his appearance. After all, losing defendants (and plaintiffs) get paid in order to get the Doug Llewelyn treatment at the end.

Only pay contractors in the amount of work they do for the day. If they work 10% of the job today, they get 10% of the pay. If they work 0% of the job, they dont get paid today. No upfront payments, if they need money upfront for materials, move on to the next contractor...
