The city has been working on building out the bike path network, and eventually you'll be able to do a loop of the city (currently you can do an out-and-back of about 76 miles). That said, you're spot on with your observations. They're not the best for commuting, bunch rides or for cruising above like 17,18 mph. Still, it's better than nothing and it's nice to have that much trail without having to worry about cars.

I really appreciate seeing this, Phil. I was in the race and when I finished, I was kind of confused that you won. My immediate thoughts were, “Phil was signing autographs and posing with the Ferrari yesterday, why would he be trying to win?” I guess this answers it. Also, how the heck do you finish a race like without stopping for water when support is forbidden in the rules? I was what I’m guessing was group 2 (in terms of large groups) halfway through, but had to drop off to refill bottles. I don’t think I reasonably could’ve carried that much liquid with me the whole day, and that was for a day that was mild and overcast!

Before I got into cycling, I raced collegiate offshore sailing, then later as paid racing crew for billionaire businessmen. The best I can describe the experience is like standing under a cold shower in your clothes, tearing someone else’s $100 bills in half as fast as you can. A+, but would not recommend to the casual observer.

I’m glad that you had such a great time down there! I was born and lived in Upstate New York until 1972, then lived in San Antonio until about fifteenth years ago. When I lived there, we used to say that San Antonio was a little hick town of one and a half million people. The problems (“I hate California” guy) are the same in many US cities and towns however. Some people don’t travel, and whenever those particular individuals do, they don’t take the time to learn about different regions, customs, or lifestyles. They willfully remain ignorant and narrow-minded. Regurgitating the misinformation and propaganda spouted by their favorite political entertainment channel, rather than opening their minds and hearts to different people, places, and ideas. Glad you had a great time in the foothills of the Texas Hill Country. There are no mountains in south Texas, but there are indeed much tougher hills than those of offer at L’eTape SA. Next time you’re around, take an extra day to check out the area around Vanderpool, TX sometime. We used to have a little “bandit race” there back in the day when those were a thing. You would love cycling there with your friends. It’s the pretty part of Texas. Pretty much the only one at that if developers haven’t spoiled it yet. Hah hah. ridewithgps.com/routes/31758671 Congratulations on your win. Cheers, Phil!
