(P.S. PLEASE DON'T REPLY/COMMENT TO THIS. WROTE THIS 6 YEARS AGO AND STILL GET NOTIFICATIONS. lol. Just write a new comment. )People forget one of the most WELL KNOWN LATINAS in history SELENA QUINTANILLA didn't even speak spanish fluently! She grew up in Texas and was very American and so were her siblings. She had to learn when her career took off. The latino community still loved her and didn't put her down for this. ....."Being "Not Latina Enough" shouldn't even be a topic of conversation anymore. People should not be judged based off of what languages they speak. Especially woman who already have so many barriers in this industry and in America in general.

You better tell it like it is Adrienne. I hate the phrases "you're not Latino enough", "you're not black enough", etc. etc. because it's literally impossible for ONE person to exactly represent an entire race/ethnicity. We are all different and that's what makes us unique. I pray that one day we can come to a place in society where we can get rid of those phrases for good.
@xxPhantomSoul
@xxPhantomSoul 8 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean. I'm a mixed race Puerto Rican (like most Puerto Ricans lol) and people always assume it's a race like...no wtf? when I tell them I'm mixed race (black, white, indigenous) I get the same "oh well you're not really black/white." I'm also scolded for taking any part in my ancestors cultures as if they didn't exist because I get put in a "just Latino" box. I'm not African enough, not European enough, not indigenous enough. Just a mutt. It's incredibly annoying. I pray that changes will happen as well.
@TheLovesnowangel
@TheLovesnowangel 8 жыл бұрын
+xxPhantomSoul Yeah. I know quite a few people who are mixed and have heard those ignorant phrases before. And getting scolded for taking part in your ancestors cultures? That's just stupid. Typically when people embrace different cultures their just broadening their horizon.
@xxPhantomSoul

+MIZZ DIAVIAN I wish people thought of it as broadening your horizon still. I tried to wear a dashiki once and got told I was cultural appropriating. Some of my ancestors come from West Africa but because of my skin color and my indigenous features, people assumed I wasn't part black. I just wanted to know more about my family history but now try to hide my learning from others. I don't like people judging me because I don't fit the image in their heads.
@TheLovesnowangel
@TheLovesnowangel 8 жыл бұрын
***** Cultural appropriating? Really? I feel someone is only cultural appropriating when they are trying to get attention or just wear something for fashion purposes and your obvious reasons was to embrace your culture. Only someone who doesn't know you would say that, so in other words they're irrelevant. And I believe you shouldn't hide your learning from others. Intelligence is one thing you should not hide. And who cares if someone is judging you because you don't fit the image in their heads. They are not God so you do not need their approval. I hope at the end of the day you just be yourself and forget others unnecessary opinions. Whew. Sorry if that was a lot I just had a lot to say about this topic.

+MIZZ DIAVIAN oh wow. thank you! It's very frustrating to have to explain and defend myself all the time when it comes to my races. I identify as Latina but it doesn't erase my ancestors histories and cultures. People don't seem to get that and just stick all Latinos in a bubble. I guess knowledge about mixed race people it's still very limited in the US. But you're very knowledgeable and your words are kind. God bless you 😊

@Marilyn Petty Ayyy el color del piel otra vez. 😂🙄😑 According to my father, Panameños on average, are typically very dark skinned...como Africanos. Buscalo si no creerme... Basing someone's ethnicity on their skin color is a joke. Yet some Latinos even do it to others...😑 I've been told numerous times by latinos and non-Latinos alike that I "don't look" Latina. 🙄😑 My skin is olive. It is not "Arabic/Moor brown" like what I'd say stereotypically constitutes as "Latino" by society. Mi familia es una mezcla de los colores... Sometimes I wish my skin was more darker... Yet, I'm just as Latino as the darker skinned individual next to me. Si eres Latino? Aprender Español. Le hará la Vida más fácil si lo hace... Todavía estoy aprendiendo... Soy Panameña tambien. Viva 🇵🇦💜

Hola! Otra panameña por aquí 👋🏻 Something that characterizes Panama from other countries is the melting pot of cultures and races. You will find thousands of Americans, Arabs (Muslims too), Asians (Chinese, Indians, etc), Europeans, Jews, and others, all within our small piece of land. Therefore, I wouldn’t say that Panamanians on average are dark-skinned like “africanos.” There is a wide array of shades. We come in different colors and sizes! Also, the nickname “chombo” is not the equivalent to that offensive word. It can be used as an insult, but most of the time is a nickname that comes out of a place of love. It is similar to “blanquita” or “gordita.”

You don't need to speak Spanish in order to be a true latino/a, but I think it's important for parents in any culture to teach their kids about their culture and their native language and also to teach them to be proud of who they are and where they come from.

Yes, you do need to speak Spanish to be a true Latino/a. Latin comes from the Romance languages as opposed to ethnicity. One of those romance languages is Spanish. it is the language that gives the basis for understanding what is going on in you your culture and your heritage and if you don't speak that language you lose your culture ad your heritage. Being a Latino/a means being in touch with your language and not just naming yourself a Latino but not understanding what is going on in your culture because you don't speak the langue. Yes be proud of where you come from but don't loose your language because you'll loose it all.

But people came to accept it and love her because of who she is and hopefully people can do that with this girl. I'm Latina and I didn't grow up in a Spanish speaking household and my boyfriends family is old school Mexican and they all can speak Spanish and shocked that I can't and I feel the hate. I think it's just old school traditions that people are hating.

+rebecca miranda Keep in mind that Selena was forced to learn Spanish before hand because her father knew the Latin community wouldn't accept her.. The genre of music Selena was playing was a male dominated genre and that alone people during the time weren't accepting of a women taking over "a man's job" but also add in that this woman was also Mexican-American but oh wait.. this Hispanic woman knows no Spanish and in their eyes she was a disgrace to the Latin community. Selena along side Gina Rodriguez own their culture with pride and I think the way Selena own over the latin community with her charm Gina will have no issues doing the same.

I always blame the Spanish speaking parents in these cases. The pointed effort NOT to teach their children Spanish ends up instilling a subtle shame towards being Hispanic and an anxiety about speaking the language later in life. The Spanish speaking community attacking learners doesn't help, either.

Learning a language is not easy. I'm sure we all know that. However, be mindful that a handful of Hispanics weren't even able to have a proper education themselves. Parents sure can help their kids learning the language, but maybe not fluently. I know plenty of families who can speak it, but not write or read.

I grew up speaking, reading, and writing Spanish in a bilingual/Spanish leaning household but at 21 years old I can barely speak a word of Spanish, write a sentence, or even read one even if I understand it spoken perfectly. My parents didn't make me lose that tongue. The American Education System did. They moved me out of my bilingual classes during 1st grade and put me in purely English ones because they thought I "spoke too much Spanish and not enough English" when I was several grades above my age group when it came to my English vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. I could hold an intelligent conversation with adults in English but the Principal and my teachers didn't approve so they moved me out. Slowly but surely I grew ashamed of my mother tongue and refused to speak it at home and at school. I stopped reading books in Spanish. I forgot what little I had learned of the written language. Nowadays, I'm reluctant to speak with my brother's and sister's in Spanish because of my broken vocabulary and the difficulty I have in forming legible sentences has prevented me from exploring that most beautiful of languages, even amongst my own family. I can understand why Spanish speaking parents will refuse to teach their young ones the mother tongue. Especially, the Mexicans of a certain age range and generational group because I have read the historical accounts from days long past. They grew up ashamed of their language. Ashamed of their heritage. Because the American Education System failed them and taught them that to be Spanish speakers was something to be ashamed about. It's not Spanish speakers or the Hispanic community that instills these thoughts and ideas into our heads. It's the rest of the American population. We get strange looks if we speak in Spanish. People scoff and sneer and ask us if we are illegal if we happen to speak with an accent or look a certain way. Or they mock us with mentions of gardeners, cleaning ladies, and nannies in an attempt to hurt our feelings and make themselves feel better about themselves. How else are parents supposed to react when stuff like this occurs? They want what's best for their children and here in the United State of America that usually means that we must learn to speak English. We must learn to speak without an accent and if we forget our mother tongue. Well, it's all for the best because then we won't get made fun in school or sneered at and ignored as adults. It's the hardest decision that these parents have to make. But one that they will gladly decide upon in the end. All for the betterment of their children's lives here in this country. If you can spare your child the pain of being perceived an outsider and being ostracized for it why wouldn't you? After all, your child can always learn to speak Spanish and glory in their shared culture when they've gotten older and their skin is thicker and better able to handle these disappointments. Because even if they haven't learned to speak the language they still share in the culture and grow up surrounded by it. Odds are they understand you perfectly well when you speak to them in Spanish. It's only a matter of them picking up the ability to actually speak it. I'm learning Spanish as we speak. Through music and Hispanic media as well as snippets of Spanish literature. When I transfer to a university I'll more than likely take Spanish and French as my main languages for my history degree. I want to learn and I will. I want to be able to read the books that my dad grew up on in Mexico. I want to be able to understand those beautiful songs from the Golden Age of Mexican cinema. I want to glory in the Spanish heritage of my Basque great grandfather as well as in the shared Mexican heritage of my Otomi grandmother and Purepecha grandfather. I want it and I will get it. If you get nothing else from this reply then please let it be this. You have no right to judge a parent for something that they've done for the welfare of their child. Not when there are children who started out their lives speaking their native language and found themselves ostracized for it and singled out. Not when the school system, the very country they were born in, failed them so terribly as to make them think that they should be ashamed of themselves and their parent's tongue. Not when the United States of America found it prudent to make several generations of Spanish speaking American children forget their language. Including this one. Our Parents are not the ones at fault here. This country and many of its citizens, its very nature as a nation even, are. I don't want to fight but I hope you understand my position on this topic. Thank you for reading and have a nice day.

In some kids cases like me it's not the case. My fathers Puerto Rican and my mother is African American, I learned Spanish as a younger kid till I was 5 when my parents got divorced. My mom lived in Michigan and I stayed with her and simply the every other holiday and one month in the summer was not going to cut it. So yes, I do know Spanish from what I've got from my fathers side and also from school, some of us just can't help our situations. I do understand this case is different from mine but, there are kids like me who sometimes don't have a choice.

You know, it can be difficult to teach your children the language when they are growing up in America and learning English in school. I am proficient in Spanish but I wouldn't say I am 100% fluent but that is OKAY. You know how frustrating it is to not be looked at as a Latina simply because "I don't look like one", I don't have an accent or I'm not completely fluent.. every Latina is different, just like every human being is different and I just don't see why that is torn down rather than celebrated.

Everything Adrienne said is the truth except the fact that she literally equates latina/latino as a race. It's not a race, it's an ethnicity. There are latinos of every existing races eventhough many are mixed : white, black (african descent), asian, native, indian, mixed. The latino ethnicity is the only one in the US that encompasses every single race available among latinos. Whereas the caucasians are basicly European descents and the African Americans are descents from Sub Saharian Africans, granted the one drop rule.

The same people who are criticizing Gina Rodriguez would probably have criticized Selena Quintanilla because Spanish was her second language and even though she spoke it pretty well, she still wasn't completely fluent. It's ridiculous. If you have Latino blood in you, you don't need any other justification for identifying as such. There are no defining characteristics telling you how to be Latino.

Nothing but praise for Selena, what she did was admirable.

It sounds like her parents were ashamed of their accents so they didn't teach their kids the language out of fear. It's sad, but understandable. Unfortunately in this country most people are intrigued by Eurocentric accents, but look down on "Latino", and Asian accents. However most first generation kids who learn their parents native language usually don't have accents when speaking English. Personally I admire families that at least teach their Kids their native language, whether they choose to use it or not is up to them. It's sad to see people reject part of their culture out of fear of being ridiculed. And sad to see that part of your culture disappear. If I ever have a kid I would at least try to teach them Spanish. I don't use it much, but I would hate for them to act like one of those snooty people who are offended when a fellow Hispanic person tries to speak to them in Spanish. It really rubs me the wrong way.

@kawaiikrew1 Anyone can be a Latino. In fact I’m from Southern Europe People in Italy Spain Portugal etc are the only true “Latinos” The mestizo shave simply hyjacks the culture and have the nerves to claim it a a “none white/European culture”. You did this with your stupid Eurocentric argument The sole reason you speak Spanish, follow Catholicism, have Spanish names like “rodriguez”, “Lopez”, even the term Hispanic is not Native American term but all has its origin in Southern Europe The term Hispanic was a terms used to refer to the people of Hispania (now modern day Spain) during the Roman era. Things such as bullfighting has its origin in Europe particularly Rome during the Roman era Even things such as football (soccer), Latino nations have even went to war over a football game. Prior to the British impact the national sport Brazil was cricket but became football after the Britain influence role for dominance Now today Latinos who look like just tanned Americans claim to be a different race. I guess during the summer I am a Latino but during the winter I’m a Nordic European. Having a slight tan doesn’t meaning anything

When you watch her everything seems so real, it's no longer acting it turns into putting yourself in the situation and react and I can't say that about a lot of actors right now her performance on Jane The Virgin is AMAZING!! But I was raised by parents who speak French fluently, and I grew up with French being my first language. So I struggled with Arabic at school, and even made mistakes when speaking it. Mistakes that I don't normally do when I speak French (or English) Does that make me not "Algerian" enough? I myself am PR and my parents know spanish and didn't want to teach us (which I do hate) so now being 22 I have to take it upon myself to learn and it's hard, people walk up to you speaking spanish and then when you tell them you don't know how to speak spanish they get on you and make you feel bad for being who you are but you know what I can cook like any other hispanic person and I can dance salsa, bachata, and merengue extremely well and I know a lot of our history and I know a lot of hispanics who can speak it and not cook, dance, or be educated of their past and I don't judge them as in being any less hispanic than what I am. Being hispanic can be hard.

*I totally understand embracing your culture. I am part Irish myself (the last four letters of my screen name are the first four letters of a common Irish last name), and I LOVE that I am part Irish (I even have an Ireland flag with my family's crest in the center of it)!*

good for her doing her own thing and not listening to the negativity. i agree just because she dosen't follow the latina stereotypes that dosen't mean she is not good enough to be latina or she is not proud of her culture. people should stop being so ignorant about this and leave the poor girl alone. she dosen't deserve this at all. what is everyone's problem?

1) To speak a Spanish is not a "stereotype". This is like saying that Americans stereotypically speak English. 2) To be a latina is not about being good enough or bad enough. But either you are or are not. 3) She not speaking Spanish doesn't mean she's not proud of her culture, I agree with you on that. But her culture is not latino culture. She doesn't even belong to it.

I think all Latinos are Latino enough but Gina's response rubbed me the wrong way . It seems as if she is encouraging assimilation when it shouldn't have a positive or negative connotation. Assimilation shouldn't be discouraged or strongly encoursged because then it does run the risk of erasing one own's culture as if you are ashamed of it in favor of gaining a a foreign culture.

+starryytchannel I don't think she was encouraging assimilation at all, just explaining the circumstances - she just said that her parents didn't want their children to suffer in ways that they did, so they decided to assimilate, but that Latinos shouldn't discriminate against her because of that. She didn't say anything about assimilation being positive or negative.

+Carlos M. I agree! When I lived in Colombia it was so amazing to see how many Colombianos, black, white, Indian, jewish, middle eastern even Asian Colombians, where SOOO proud of being Colombian! Yet they also maintained a sense of their roots. It honestly put me to shame as an American. I am proud of my country but I am also proud of my heritage and my Mexican and Guatemalan roots :)

I'm from New York and we moved to TX when I was 10. My parents wanted me to not have a New York accent Becuase everyone in Texas has such an attractive southern accent and I sound uneducated with my natural voice but I'm used to it now. I love her so much she is such a talented actress and she handled that with such grace❤️

Latino significa literalmente nativo de Latium o sea Italia. Los latinos son europeos, la cultura latina es europea. No te da verguenza tu ignorancia? No te da verguenza decirte orgulloso de ser una cosa que no eres? Reclama tu americanidad

I can completely agree and relate to this! It is so hurtful to be proud of being latina yet I am looked down upon by my own "kind" because my parents did not teach me spanish and I do not have an accent for the same reason of Gina. Latinos call me white washed and white girls are glad that I am not a "mexican - mexican." I am very proud of my culture and make it a point to always know where my mother and her mother came from and the sacrifices they had to make for me to be a respected American Citizen.

My parents made sure we never forgot our roots. They never let us forget we have Spanish speaking relatives, so we should still speak Spanish. Unfortunately, with the years, my younger siblings and relatives live in different times and speak mostly English.

I wish there was a person who would represent Caribbeans in the entertainment industry. Like Rihanna is great and all, so is Nicki, but they somehow have become whitewashed. There's a ton of singers and actors of caribbean descent and you would never know because of how they try so hard to hide it & they probably feel like they'd be accepted more in the industry. I think that's what they meant in gina's case of not being "latina" enough. If girls can be latina and african and win awards, so can we.

There's always someone who voices out their opinion, even though most of the time, it's not wanted. as part of a mixed culture surrounding us you can not fault someone for wanting to represent their culture( as in their race, pastor ancestors) in the best way possible and also wanting to be part of the culture that now you are involved in. I, myself am a chinese ( born in China, mind you) BUT I live in Peru, an spanish speaking country. Being raised in Peru means I barely speak chinese, but I always get judged if I don't, because of my face(the fact that I'm clearly chinese). I speak fluent spanish and embrace peruvian culture, but thereis always gonna be someone judging you. Point is, the best way to deal with these kinds of critics is just ignoring them, and be the best you can be as part of both cultures. :) have a happy day y'all!
