If your diet consists of moderate to high amounts of salt or carbohydrates or BOTH. You could be retaining water when in all actuality you’re still losing body fat, just having it covered by water. Creatine also retains water and makes you gain weight, but inside of the muscles, so it’s a tad different. Don’t be discouraged, just keep tracking and stick with the process.

Look up "opening your detox pathways for fat loss." After YEARS of researching, I finally ran across someone who actually addresses this for people who fast, intermittent fast, or eat well but still dont lose weight or have unpleasant side effects while doing so. One should also have their hormones, liver, thyroid, and pituitary gland checked. Also people do not stress the importance of muscle loss with calorie restriction vs fasting...and the importance of stimulating muscles or focus on building muscles for fat loss. Its why "skinny people stay skinny." Their muscle tends to outweigh the amount of fat on their body. More muscle means more calorie burn on a day to day basis...which means a faster metabolism overall. It takes A LOT of weight traning to get bulky....everyone should weight train or at least tone in some way like using resistance bands or body weight exercises. Also....low intensity exercise targets stored fat while high intensity exercise burns glucose. So walking 30mins to an hour before a meal or (in a fasted state is best) and is the sweet spot for fat loss! Walk as much as possible and get those steps in, just a casual stroll doesn't need to be a fast pace...that's why they reccomend 10k steps daily 😣 which is hard. But if a person puts in at least an hour a day, theyre at about 7-8k steps already. So low intensity exercise daily if possible but 5x a week is still good, and then muscle building 2-3x a week at least, & progressively increase the weight as it gets easier every 2-4 weeks or so. Hopefully they wont delete my comment, but start here if you are struggling still.

@@Kane6676 Hello, I stated the importance of having hormones checked too along with tests for liver, thyroid and pituitary gland. Also, dont know if this is your situation, but for me I had a hormonal issue I had to address first. After I did, I still wasnt losing as much weight for my size as I should have been. Then I had to remove ALL processed foods, unnatural sugar, red meat, dairy, wheat, corn, and oils. Once I got my diet as natural as possible and let my body work out everything it was fighting against, the scale started moving again. The weird thing is that even if I ate those foods in a deficit and even at or below BMR the scale would not budge for me because the additives preservatives & hormones disrupted my hormones severely and kept me in fat storage mode...even when fasting and staying under calories during refeeds. Later as I figure out what my triggers were for my body, I found I can get away with plant milk & some sauces, tortilla chips things like that now and certain meats with the right food combos. Example, I can eat red meat if I eat only green veggies that day, and same with chicken. If I eat these meats with any type of sugar, even fruit or starchy veggies like potatoes, (eveb while in a deficit) body holds to fat. Fish I can eat with anything etc. You just have to learn your body. Now that the scale is moving again, I need to focus on gaining muscle to burn more fat. I had extreme muscle loss due to eating extremely low calories for my body size...which worsened my body's ability to burn calories because more muscle equals more calorie burn. My metabolism was wrecked lol. So it's different for everyone. Not sure of your age, but when weight stalls like that, you have to be real methodical with your approach. It may even be something weird due to chronic inflammation and you may need an anti-inflammotory diet or stimulate lymph drainage more with certain things (my case). Everybody is different. It can be harder if you're younger and have to rely on your parents, or just can't afford to go to the doctor or get a decent doctor willing to believe you to test multiple things. But it's worth eliminating things, making a difference whre you can and trying to figure it out to get in tune with your body. It took me a couple of years with no help from doctors and basically ASKING to have specific labs done and then being treated poorly like I was telling them to do their jobs or like I was crazy or "wanted attention." Turns out what I found so far was I had a hormonal issue (severe estrogen dominance), sluggish liver, hypothyroid, anemic, and vit D deficiency. I also have to stimulate my lymphatic system due to poor circulation for the average person. If you can, a good place to research and consider is the "elimination diet" or an "anti inflammatory diet" most people have good results there when they dont know where to start. Dont just rely on the scale either, measure yourself too & take pics. When you see things are moving along, while in a deficit, then slowly add back a few foods at a time that arent on those lists for those specific diets. Best to start with 1 though it makes it easier to pinpoint the culprit food. If you notice a reaction like water retention, gas, reflux, indigestion, weight gain, bloating etc, your body may not like it and your body is storing fat to protect you from it. Also.... if you are legit storing fat like that, researching what I suggested in my original comment "opening your detox pathwats for fat loss" they explain that the body uses fat to store excess calories, excess sugar, fat soluble vitamins, and toxins. Toxins love fat, and when the body gets a heavier load than the liver can process & filter out, it immediately stores it as fat. You could be highly toxic and need to assist your body in releasing excess toxins. If they are not properly released via the bowels or detox pathways...they get cycled back through the body and it holds to fat or creates more fat to store it. Im telling you research the things I suggested if it's that important to you, because learning about it made so much sense to me. When I heard it, it truly helped a longterm morbidly obese person like me finally start losing fat again. Her name is Dr. Mindy Pelz on KZbin...search "Dr. Mindy Pelz detox pathways" to watch her free content. **Sorry I had so many typos I had to edit it LOL. I was speed typing on my phone.

Didn't address the issue when this really is the case. I'm a retired MD with a long history of obesity and yoyo dieting. Worked for several weeks, dropped to 800, same thing after several weeks, dropped to 600, which was the lowest allowable for the product used for adequate nutrition. They pulled me off at 187 lbs, still overweight. Switched to supervised intermittent fasting and lost more weight dropping to as low as 173, and plateaued again. The problem at that point was I was losing large amounts of muscle, sparing significant amounts of fat, particularly on my back, buttocks, thighs, and pelvic subcutaneous fat. Horrible to see! To prove that this was indeed fat and not just loose skin, did a DEXA scan, which showed 27% body fat at 170-175 pounds..At this point, I've started an intense effort to change body composition, but being in my mid 60's this is a real challenge. Granted, this is anecdotal, however, I know there are a lot more like me out there and the problem does indeed exist for those who are adherent.

no please dont do 500 a day, you will gain your weight back fast. eat at a 200-400 deficit from your maintenance calories

Great answer. Tracking is not always easy, and it could be eating out, supplements, snacking, very oily foods, condiments, alcohol, underestimating calories from exercise, and more. Many clients are fairly resistant to providing food logs, and it takes a different approach for each one.

What would you do in this scenario? Would you get off the long term cut, or keep going to get to a desired body fat percentage? I understand calories in and calories out, but is it worth reducing calories further, and continue to risk losing muscle?

I have lost like 12.1 Kg, but after that i felt like my weight would stabilize and there was not more progress, so what i did was chancing my calories a little when there was no progress within 2 - 3 weeks, with little i mean like 80 Calories underneath what i was eating that moment. I still have dont it serval times, but i am now on 2098 Calories a day and i dont feel like there is much room anymore to cut down on calories, because then i am almost starving myself. I suspect n.e.a.t. Non-exercise activity thermogenesis. Often craters as a survival mechanism in a dieted state... Tracking steps is very useful in a diet for exactly this reason. Likely she's unconsciously being sluggish and needs to manually up the activity. Also suspect diet resistance. Again, partly n.e.a.t. and other adaptive variables. I suspect she's just adapted to this starvation state. A lot of successful diet programs allow a couple weeks of diet breaks to undo the down-regulation of metabolism.

Person not tracking efficiently, new maintenance calories has been set (which means you should work on increasing your maintenance calories slowly so you can then decrease them so you aren’t starving yourself), maybe you are gaining muscle which weighs more than fat and it’ll take you some time to see that reflected on a scale.... these are just some of the reason the scale may not be moving therefore just decreasing again and again is not the answer or healthy.

This was really disappointing. Effectively saying the person is either a liar or ignorant. But the issue of people in a severe calorie deficit and not loosing weight is pretty common. And should be taken more seriously. And just prima facie, if one’s calories go so low to be in a starvation mode, it makes sense that the body is going to have evolved adaptations and hormonal response to reduce the weight lose or slow it, to hold onto weight for the sake of survival, to slow your BMR, spike cortisol, etc.

If your calorie expenditure is consistently higher than your calorie intake you will lose weight, there's nothing else really to it. If you burn 5000 calories a day you can eat 4000 and lose a lot of weight, but if you burn 2000 calories and then eat 4000 you will gain weight pretty quickly.
@bigtasty894 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking -500kcals a day would drop about 1lbs a week, so typically no one ever goes beyond -1000kcals. Everybody is going to have a variation on that, but It's a good starting value to use until you can discern it more accurately for yourself. And if your trying to work out your expenditure well... if your dropping 1lbs a week, it's probably 500kcals more than you're eating.... so on and so forth.

Same here. Right now at 97 kg with around 1800 calories and finding it difficult to loose weight even with lifting and some walking. If your not dropping the pounds at 2000 / 1800. Increment down. If you're worried about losing prog.. make sure your protein is on point, and you are maintain your lifts, not advancing them. You'll just risk overtraining and probably tank the lot. That said 100 - 105kg is a nice weight to be if your strong... you might wanna consider the recompositon approach? and take advantage of the easier gains from being a lil fluffy.

@bigtasty894 жыл бұрын
Well concerning the metabolism thing. You can't really afford to let it be the point of blame. It's going to go up when your training and eating hard, and it's going to drop when you're dieting. You could even say that expenditure is significantly different in both instances. And because of that the only way to ensure an actual deficit is to increment down until you are losing weight. Weight being lost is by definition a deficit in which case goal achieved. If weight is not being lost, it's not a deficit until it is, whatever your current metabolism level. Same goes for the opposite with a surplus. You simply increment calories up and down on a regular basis according to what you gained or lost. Metabolism is your bodies calorie cost to maintain it's assets, you just need to be under it or above it. Whether your body became more expensive or cheaper than usual to maintain, you still have to base it around that ever changing expenditure value.

Um.. All that is great ASSUMING the entire problem is not counting the calories correctly or lying about intake. Does not answer the question. And there ARE reasons one can not lose weight in a deficit. I respect you guys but this is a bad vid. @@snlmp he didn't answer the question because the question itself is a paradox. If you're eating in a deficit, you'll lose weight. It's an impossible scenario that doesn't require an answer. You can't actually be in a deficit and not lose weight. So he answered why someone might say this, and how you address the actual cause (which is that they are not actually being in a deficit).
