Because I often sketch people I have a base transparent fleshtone blend in my palette premixed from my own 3 pigment combination. I can lighten or darken this (with burnt umber--also in my palette). That way I can easily get a fleshtone but also have variety. I came up with the 3 pigment blend after a lot of experimentation. I wasn't happy with these orange faced skintones and wanted to create a base for getting various results.

I have done too much glazing before to try make the colour darker so it became shiny instead. I should have just used a neutral tint or complementary colour to make it darker or else chosen a darker colour to begin with

Thank you so much for that video, it is to helpful. This is a mistake I make almost all the time. Biggest problem for me is that watercolour becomes lighter when it dries. I never seem to get the tone right. Thanks for the hint about the thirsty paper, i never considered that fact. Your channel is really helpful and i learn so much from you!

Yes very helpful Teoh-that's why I like to have a large palette with plenty of squares so I can fill them up with certain colors-and an area for mixing. If they dry up I just add water-but first I try to get ALL the areas of same color first.

I like your comment that the new color looks like socks, maybe when we do that we could consider it one of those opportunities for creativity, maybe add a pattern so it's even more sock like lol I will probably make this mistake a lot so I think I might also try finishing 1 person at a time, if the next person is a different shade that would look natural, instead of the legs being different to the rest of the person. There is a comment asking for help making shadow colors look natural. That's sounds like something I could learn from too. I really like this series idea & look forward to more of it. Thanks!

Hi teoh! Thanks the video, as you said ill comment bellow one of my most mistakes into the watercolor word. After the first layer of paint, when I want to make the shadows, I allways end adding wrong color, I try to explain. I paint in ocre a wall, and try to make the shadow mixing ocre and ultramarine blue, for example, but at the end it doesnt looks like a shadow in the sketch, it looks kinda just other color. That was just an example with the ocre, but I do this mistake a lot with any color. Id like to know more about shadows because that is triggering me. Sorry about my english tho. Thanks your videos are allways helpful.

I have a beginner tip. Use Daniel Smith shadow violet. The color is a muted TRANSPARENT neutral with granulating shades of blue, orange (PB29+PG18+PO73 ). Just painting this over any color makes the perfect shadow. I know it's the lazy way, but in a hurry this works!

I am using Dan Smith and Windsor-Newton in tube paints. And Van Gogh and Sennelier in pans. (I have others but it is difficult to find good quality in half pan sets) I bought the later two as I have seen you use them with great results. Using paint freshly poured from a tube is no problem. It is the other.

I'm a 90/200 guy: I either mix 90% of the color I need, or 200%. I have so many palettes (in the studio) that I never have to throw away anything, so I purposefully aim for 200%, which I hit about 50% of the time.

I have trouble mixing that large amount with the half pans or even whole pans. When I add more water, it seems to only thin it out. Any hints on picking up more saturated color? Perhaps I should press even harder. Seems like a small thing but I do have trouble. Thanks.

@@dees3179 Yes, prewetting the pans will make it easier to mix. Sometimes it depends on the paint and also the quality. It can be difficult to get the intensity of some student brand paint

Hi Teoh! KZbin randomly recommended you to me today and I couldn’t be happier it did, because I fell in love with your style instantly. I like how you pay attention to little details that I as a beginner often neglect. Really, I can’t believe you don’t have more subscribers! Just one question: do you have a tutorial on how to mix skin tones? It’s been a real struggle of mine. Thank you for making quality content, you are amazing ❤️
@teohyc5 жыл бұрын
For skin tones just use warm yellows and warm/cool reds. Add some blue for darker shades. Be careful when adding blue because it changes colours very quickly

Great tip! For some reason I have a knack for mixing, if I mix less I can reproduce the mix pretty much, so this is not an issue. My main problems now seem to revolve around paper drying time: either it dries too fast & I don't want that, or ... 100% cotton seems to stay wet too long & evenly spread my followup washes, effectively rendering my "shadows" to nothing. I took to using a hairdryer home, not sure how this is gonna "work" on location. You never mentioned waiting for washes to dry, also, I don't see my problem happening to you in your videos. What's your secret? :D

Great video! A question from a beginner here : what do you do when you mix too much paint? You put the excess on an empty pan or palette for later? What if it's not a lot of paint that you have left, but just a little bit? You throw it away? This question is on my head from 2 years now. I don't know what to do with the mix i didn't use. Thank you!
@teohyc5 жыл бұрын
At home, you can let the mixture dry, and reuse that next time by wetting it again. For outdoors, I would usually just pour the excess away. Anyway, after painting for years, you would probably have a good idea of how much to mix.

I've heard this problem given, but I don't know but have never cared about this. If I don't mix the exact shade-- there is a lot of variation in life (even architecture). If you look at things you see a lot of variation color. I might even do this intentionally-- add variation of colors.
