I love this! A homey home is not minimal. If you look at Nora Ephron and Nancy Meyers movies, all of their homes contain layers of trinkets, photos, artwork, cookware, books, patterns, fabrics, textures, etc. What people get wrong is this sterile staged look.

I get it but i dnt think it's a fair statement to say "a homey home is not minimal". Homey is a feeling and vibe more than a design. So if one feels homey in a minimal empty space, that's very valid. Same goes with a person feeling homey in a maximalist space. Design is personal and as with everything, you don't need to get it, you just need to respect that we each have preferences.

I agree, it's all about curating and styling so it's personal and meaningful, not just 'stuff' for the sake of stuff! 💖 I love Nancy Meyers movies! Meryl Streep’s (character) in “It’s Complicated” has the most incredible kitchen 😍 Also Meg Ryan’s cozy UWS apartment in Nora Ephron’s “You’ve Got Mail,” is just lovely. These are true homey homes 🥰

Happy New year Christina, I started taking my christmas decorations down/most of the lights, which puts me in a sad mood, I love the warm christmas lights on, when everything else is dark...... anyway, I just love all the warmth/different elements you have in that room, so relaxing, cozy, it's not giving off a feeling that you want to automatically sleep, but to reflect/daydream & just breathe!

Awww you're so sweet, Emilia ❤️I know the feeling-we took tree down today too. It’s always a little sad for me after the holidays are over-we’re just left with winter. That’s why it so important to bring in a little extra warmth, a little extra glow into our homes to help us feel the cozy comforts of home 🥰 I kept the little tea lights in the black liquor cabinet and decided not to pack those. It’s my way to maintain some of that twinkle during the dark nights ✨

Great video. I think I have decided for me I like contrast, layers and warmth. Very similar style to what you have shown here. I love the idea of having battery-opperated tea lights in the cabinet to illumate the dark spaces. I am definitely going to try that. Thanks so much!

I love the layering concept, and your three words to describe how you want your room to feel. I kind of like the dark moodiness of winter as it adds to the coziness of layering and use of lots of candles. It also speaks to my Scorpio side, ha! I do find it a bit challenging to find cushions and throw blankets to work with change of seasons

Agree - designing a space isn't so much about aesthetics. It's asking yourself, what do you want to feel in your space? Your answer will now direct you to create a unique intentional space that truly resonates to you.

Hi Christina, leaving a wonderful time of the holidays and the start of the new year behind me, feeling a little sad about it. Needed a few days of transition to give meaning to the first few days after. I think your suggestions of making your home nurturing in winter are lovely, however, I never really change my home with the changing of the seasons. Well that is not totally true, I bring more candles in, also battery charged. For me making my nurturing home is an ongoing process. Like I love the cushions I brought from Paris, 1,5 years ago, they make me smile every day. But they are not necessarily a winter mood kind of color. But I still think what you say makes sense. I have my own ritual of marking seasons and transitions, phases in my years: I always bring in fresh flowers. I curate them carefully, so they fit with my mood, the season, plans I am making, how I want to feel at that moment, what I want my home to tell me about feeling great, letting things go and embracing something new in my life etc. I take with me your three words: Layered, Meaningful and Sensual. Not just for the dark days of winter, but for every season. Just playing with the words in my mind. I don't take notes, I am sorry (lol), but what I do is connect your teachings with aspects in my home. And sometimes it leads to new actions or feelings about my home. Like I would never want wood panelling in my home, makes me feel inclosed I think, but I do love my dark wood dining table, that gives me the same warmth. You evoked that feeling with your video today. Also the three part layering made me look around, and suddenly I realized it is an aspect of how I compose my home. I think it even helps with some tricky corners I struggle with, now you made me be more conscious about the proces. Great to see you healthy and in your strength. Thank you. Be blessed.

I echo many of your thoughts here. My decor only changes slightly with the seasons, i.e. switching cushions and throws. I love having the warmth of walnut wood table and cabinets in my home.

It’s very often the little things that can create impact: candles, a cozy throw, changing out pillow covers, adding flannel bedding-these little things give us that extra warmth and nurture us. I think of it like a big cozy hug from our home 🤗 I felt a bit sad when the tree came down with all its warm lights, but leaving some of these cozy things behind made all the difference. It’s also a reminder to me that all life slows down in these months-not just the animals outside but the plants as everything “sleeps” a bit more. So I lean into that and do things around our home to support relaxation, being fully present and enjoying the beauty that this season (albeit challenging in the past) has. It can be full of comfort and love too ❤️

If there is a term for me, it's Organic Modern. It incorporated much of what I learned from studying Japanese Sano design in the 80s, with clean shapes, useability and aesthetics, using natural materials, the objects can be eclectic, I have brooms from a Japanese Monastery, African pieces, Chinese scrolls, Copper sculptures, Zuni prints - but they are all organically made, and the furniture is modern. mostly made by people with organic materials, mostly made by people.

Hi Christina, I really needed this video. I’ve been so negative on winter and always focusing on the depressing things that seem to come with cold and darkness. I too love candles, curling up by a fire with a soft warm throw and enjoying a hot cup of tea. I loved the photo of the fur throw with the taupe cognac and tan pillows. I agree about changing fabrics for the seasons, but it is sometimes expensive to, for example, change upholstery (even slipcovers can be expensive, unless you are handy with a sewing machine). For this reason, I change pillows and drapery-from linen to velvet. It is much less expensive this way. Changing throws on a couch, as you suggested, also has an impact. Thanks for your thoughtful ideas.

Hi 👋! Of course another informative video. 👍🏼I took down Christmas immediately after Xmas day. And although I loved my decor and all the feels I was actually excited for simplicity. I enjoy cozying up my home with soft blankets, burning lightly scented earthy candles (like Sandalwood), the fireplace, reading books, drinking hot tea/coffee and lately I’m enjoying baking as well.

Lol, we're on the same page! Just before you said the word theme regarding decorating "styles", I was thinking the exact same thing! I watched another designer recently who was predicting styles that would carry on or not, and as she was naming and describing them I realized that a reason I do not like so many of the styles is because they feel like a themed party which requires you to purchase everything in that theme to create cohesion. Yuck. That is just not me! I prefer how you encourage the use of adjectives to describe the visual and emotional outcome of design and decor. Within that outline I can create a space unique to our family and our needs. Definitely not cookie cutter design in our homes!❤ My office was not working for me, for lots of reasons. My husband jumped on it after Christmas. I now have a built in work space painted the same ecru as the walls and ceiling, ecru curtains with pink/burgundy roses, a jute rug to embrace the golden oak floors in our 1930s house, and a $35 second hand burgundy wing back chair. I feel so peaceful in here. A few more things need doing, but it's pretty, peaceful, cohesive, and serves for both production and a reading corner. I love the inspiration you give us all to create beauty in our homes😊

Regarding maxilmalism, I'm like you. I absolutely love it, but only when it's tasteful. I prefer a monochromatic maximalism. Instead of a room screaming at me, I'd rather a space lure me and whisper, "C'mon in, I have so many things to show you." I was once asked my opinion of an acquaintance 's bold colored, over-the-top maximalist home. Note, she was present. I didn't want to be rude but I'm always honest (Scorpio), so I said, "It's giving Tony Duquette on acid." She took it as a compliment. At least, I was half-nice.

I miss having a fireplace.... We would go for weeks on end sometimes without electricity due to ice storms (before Global warming pretty much eliminated wither (except yesterday - which was still mild compared to my childhood in the 70s and 80s... ) it no longer gets -72F with windchills. Most people here nowadays don't know how to use a fireplace - I showed my boss how to use the flue to balance warmth from the fire, vs keeping smoke out - She had no idea why it was colder when there was a fire... And then how the function of the fire was to warm the bricks/stone to keep the house warm with radiant heat from the mass of the stones or brick. The flue was wide open for even small fires, so all the heat escaped through the chimney, and the mass of the fireplace never warmed up. The flue is like a carburetor in reverse, open it full to get airflow to start the fire and then you close it until the smoke starts backing up, and then you open it until the smoke flows, and the heat remains to warm the bricks and the rooms attached to the fireplace and chimney... I now have a useless skill, and most fireplaces are blocked due to insurance due to people not doing maintenance to keep them functional and safe. But I do miss having one.

I also miss the ritual of it - stripping the bark for kindling, arranging the wood for airflow through the firewood, and then at the end of the day, selecting the big piece of oak to put on top to keep the fire going overnight, the tapping of the wood to drop the coals, and the spreading of the coals under the fire to warm the hearth, and then pulling the ash to enrich and feed the garden and lawn... After my grandfather taught me , I was keeper of the fire until I went to University.
