Out of all the tragedies of the U.S. Civil War, the ruining of two really attractive flag designs is pretty far down the ladder of awfulness, but it's still on there. From a flag-design standpoint, the Confederate battle flag and naval jack are just about perfect. They stick to three colors and are fairly simple, but still present a striking, distinct look.

Well, even if it is a Confederate flag, I do believe that because it was never the official flag, it should at least be given a break. Remember, before the Nazis used it, the swastika used to be a religious symbol of peace. Despite the history of the confederacy, I can't deny that that is a great looking flag. It has shapes that makes it easy to draw, while having an uncommon and distinct looking diagonal cross, making it easy to recognise. I also like the color scheme (but I am from Norway, and it reminds me of the Norwegian flag, so that might just be my bias). If the flag didn't represent what it does, I'd like to have one in my house.

Slavery was not addressed by the Constitution, and "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively...", therefore the ability to allow or disallow slavery technically fell into the hands of the states. When the federal government tried to take those rights from them, they got upset, and decided to form their own country. However, none of that excuses slavery in the slightest. Let me make it clear that I am not supporting their choice to keep slaves, merely that they felt it was their Constitutional right to do so.

For those saying "the flag means nothing, it represents freedom and opposition and rebellion and "southern culture", all states used to be slave states so all flags should be condemned then" I'm willing to debunk it. First, let's talk about the reason the civil war occurred. White people within the southern united states didn't like the people of the north, for various reasons and over time that dislike grew. One of the largest reasons was that the north was incrementally banning slavery, which the south wanted to keep in place. Now I'm sure I don't have to explain to anyone here slavery is fucking despicable. So a number of states that still allowed slavery (note that numerous people in the northern united states still kept slaves, just because a law is passed doesn't mean everything is suddenly dandy) known as "slave states" broke away from the united states to preserve themselves. It was a seperatist country founded upon the principles of defending their right to legally own people of a different race, which is why such a flag is condemned while other previous state flags are not. Also of note is people defending the fact that there were other slave states still within the union. This is true, there isn't any falsehood in that, but the difference here is they were not opposed to incremental change. Staying within the union meant that they were ready for the possibility of change, of slowly abolishing slavery (don't get me wrong, slavery should have been abolished immediately but it is far better than confederate slave states)

I feel like this oversimplifies the motivations of the confederacy. While slavery was a root cause it's never really discussed why and is just left to "The south hated blacks and wanted to own them because racism" when that is not the main reason. Imagine you're a bunch of states and your economy is primarily based on System A. Without System A, your economy would be in shambles and you would barely have enough economic output to sustain yourself. Well, some group of people in another group of states with more ways to make money don't like System A so they want to ban it. You can start to see why the South didn't like this. From their perspective it was a bunch of people with far more economic opportunity trying to destroy the primary economic opportunity the south had. And then imagine what the south thought when the people trying to ban slavery had slaves and you'll start to see why that point is parroted so much. I'm not defending slavery but history isn't as black and white as your comment implies and every war or conflict has many complicated causes. And as much as you may think you have debunked the claim that the Confederate battle flag/Confederate flag represents southern culture, you can't really debunk a cultural icon. If a bunch of people agree that an icon represents them or their culture you can't really say they are wrong.

It's reasonable to say that it's associated with the country that officially used it, but anybody can pick a flag from history and declare it a symbol of something or other, and if we were to consider all of that to be as significant as it is typically done inside the US when it comes to the Confederate flag, we wouldn't have any flags left to fly. Think of this: a few decades before the US Civil War, when the US was fighting the War of 1812, it was the US that was desperately trying to hold on to slavery and racial segregation, faced with an opponent, Britain, that had already outlawed slavery and that was actively recruiting freed slaves into its military, to fight against their former owners. Does that make the Stars and Stripes a symbol of slavery and racism?

PENGUlN124 it does depend on who sees it, some see it as a symbol of hate, some see it as a symbol of rebellion from a government they see as abusive and some see it as cultural and historical symbol. he is partly right and wrong it also was flown during the centennial of the War. the Civil war has a huge symbol in the south, there are anti-bellum homes and buildings that survived the civil war, a ton of Cultural sites and a number of tourist traps too. if you go to the south you will see it had a major effect on people here, really the south didnt really recover from the civil war till after WW2, so a lot of people here do not associate it with racism, but southern pride, regardless of if you believe that or not its a real perception that the south was treated poorly before during and after the war, and it kinda serves as a reminder of that to a lot of people

I am not even American and I honestly respect anyone who is proud of that flag, with the one condition that they understand why it is so offensive to so many people. The Civil War was way too long ago, I know the flag actually originated from those events, but just like the video proves, they never settled on one specific flag. So I still hold my claim that the only reason it is big today and the other ones faded away is because many years later KKK, Dixiecrats, and other hateful groups adopted that specific one out of the bunch.. @@erickrasniewski567 even with Lee, almost the entire war was fought on southern soil and he couldn't even force the North to move the capital back to its old location dispite DC being basically right on the front lines. And that was when the US army was filled with incompetent generals. Once Lincoln had fired enough generals to actually get to people who knew what they were doing (which was more than just Grant, btw)....well, we all know how that went. Look past the battles and the legends and myths. The fact that Lee (who I admit was a good general) couldn't even get the capital moved back from the front lines when the North had a bunch of incompetent generals only to try a desperate hail-mary in his only significant push into the North (seriously Lee, basics of warfare is know your enemy. Fighting a master of terrain tactics and logistics in the Pennsylvanian foothills was a fool's errand) is a clear example of how the South picked a fight it couldn't win. Tl:dr Lee vs the incompetent early Northern generalship and the best they could do is fight to a draw while Lincoln purged the upper levels off command of incompetence. From day 1 the whole war was just a matter of time.

You could have explained how the flag returned to the public AFTER the US Civil War as well because that would bring context to its meaning today and its meaning in the past. The simple reason it returned long long after the US Civil War is because people in the South started using it to protest Black Civil Rights. Considering the reason for the US Civil War, wanting to keep a slave economy, and the later cause of using the flag as a protest banner against Black civil rights. As a kid I wanted the confederate flag in my room as it was cool and "cowboy" to me. (Don't ask why, I don't know either why I related the flag to cowboys). I always wondered why my parents wouldn't let me. Later on in life I did realise why lol. (I am not from the US btw.)

Definitely look into the history of the South. There is nothing in US history that has been more contaminated than that period. Ask any historian, professor, high school teacher what any war in any country at any time in human history was about and they say "oh that's a complicated question, it was a bunch of things blah blah blah". Ask anyone who attended or teaches at American public schools or colleges what the civil war was about and they give you a single word answer
