I agree with your take that this music is quite like pop, that was my first impression of them. It is very accessible 8n certain ways, but still easily qualifies as very heavy music. It is a great mix of abraisive and heavenly qualities.

what hooked me about their band is that her screams have pitch. it's insane. it's almost like a scream/sing hybrid. and how she can switch between scream, sing, and back to scream seamlessly is unreal.

Just found your channel, 10/10 love it. If you want a good Spiritbox song that isn’t one of the main singles, check out Sun Killer. Banger of a song to open their new album with. Haven’t watched your Periphery video yet, doing that next and am curious what you think. One of the greatest Djent bands of all time IMO.

@@PrymalChaos I think blood eagle is good, but it sounds like too much of the same, and is heavy just for the sake of being heavy for too much of the song. it fits, blood eagle is a ritual execution preformed by Norse tribes, it should be a violent and heavy song. but it doesn't showcase Spencer's vocal ability nearly enough.

Man, the reviewer really understands FLOW and why Courtney is a stand apart from the other females in her category. I’m in a band and we experiment a ton with maneuvering around rhythms to make the songs interesting, feeling like a roller coaster ride, and it’s not easy. It’s a ton of syncopation. Great job, Spiritbox.
@yrussq

Reviewer has no f$%#inkg idea what's happening vocally here. Yeah, it's just her natural "breathy" voice, and her pitched and non-pitched screams are happening automagically. No, she definitely hasn't trained all this, it's just nature. It would not hurt if he took some vocal class, just to sound not like an arrogant asshole and pay some respect to the pure mastery.

I missed video when you first posted it, but another great reaction and analysis. I discovered Spiritbox at about the same time I discovered I Jinjer and I quickly fell in love with both bands. Both have great songwriting, musicianship and production and of course, female vocal goddesses. 😆 Although, I'm still not a huge fan of their super heavy songs with almost entirely harsh vocals......but I'm slowly warming up to it as I listen to it more often. I'm seeing Jinjer live in Boston in a couple weeks and I'd love to see Spritbox live if they come around the area.

Spiritbox only release bangers! You still have lots to check out! This band is unreal and now one of my favourites of all time! Glad you checked this one out! Courtney has such an angelic voice paried with a demonic scream and Mike is a riff god and Bill is so groovy on the bass, and of course Zev kills it on the drums non-chalantly! Quite a unique band blew me away first time listening to them a couple years ago! Background info: The lead singer/screamer Courtney LaPlante and guitarist/lead song writer Mike Stringer are a married couple who left the band iwrestledabearonce and started their own project called Spiritbox influenced by the device that allows the living to speak with the dead (spirits) through radio frequencies; anyways they formed in 2016 just the two of them and released a self-titled EP in 2017. Mike recorded all the guitars and programmed the drums and bass which is a talent in itself. Eventually, their friend Bill Crook joined the band as the bassist which you will come to realize how good he is, extremely groovy.. they really let the bass shine in their songs and together they made a 5 song EP called the Singles Collection released in 2019. Just last year in 2020 they added Zev Rose as their official drummer before that they hired touring drummers. They are a Canadian 🇨🇦 band from Vancouver Island, British Columbia and only toured for a short time before COVID-19 derailed their touring plans and progress! They are heavily internet based doing live studio shows and other means of digital content. Since their first two EPs they have just put out singles to tie us over but now they have released 5 singles for their first album Eternal Blue which is now out, and the album is a contender for AOTY! Songs you need to check out: Spiritbox EP songs: The Mara Effect pt 1, 2, 3 (watch live performance from Silverside Sound studios) which you did ✅ The Beauty of Suffering Everything's Eventual Aphids Singles Collection: Perennial, Belcarra, Trust Fall, Bleach Bath, Electric Cross Stand alone singles: Rule of Nines (Courtney's Live one take performance) Blessed Be (Music video) Eternal Blue singles: Constance, Circle With Me, Secret Garden, Holy Roller ✅, Hurt You. Then check out the rest of the album! Also as a treat check out their Sirius XM Liquid Metal Live Performance all three parts! Very, very good performance. They have spooky and well shot music videos and killer songs, they simply don't miss! Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦 🍻 by the way great reaction/review, I have enjoyed your content so far! More Bring Me The Horizon too would be awesome!

Quite honestly the feedback on my channel from fans of Spiritbox has been truely next level. Whatever they're doing, it's breeding a passionate fanbase. Everything I have heard of theirs has been outstanding. It's just a powerhouse of creativity and mature song writing. I'll get around to all of their stuff, just may take a minute. I'm pushing out as much diverse content as possible right now, but my spare time is also pretty limited. The dream is to do this full time, however that's not happening any time soon. Bear with me, I'll get around to all their material 🤘 Thanks for the amazing comment. Everybody knows that Canadians are the best people in the world. 😆👍

Another great reaction! Circle With Me is track 11 of the 12-track album Eternal Blue, which was released (the album, that is) on 17 September 2021. This track was the third single pre-released from it, on 30 April 2021, after Holy Roller (July 2020) and Constance (December 2021). Mostly, the songs were written during the two years up to the album’s release, but Circle With Me was a late addition - Courtney said Michael wrote the music in around an afternoon(!) on February 14 (yep) 2021, when they were finally able to all be in the studio along with Dan Braunstein (producer, engineer, mixer, synths…). According to Courtney, her lyrics refer to her own inner conflict between the drive to succeed and the occasional flashes of high confidence it can bring, and her natural self doubt. I’m sure you would enjoy seeing her live one-takes of Holy Roller (serious, like this one) and particularly Rule of Nines, where her endearing sense of humour is on display just before it and straight afterwards. There is also one of their first ever release, The Beauty of Suffering. Another great set to watch is the virtual live gig they did for Sirius XM Liquid Metal, which Is divided into 3 parts, each consisting of 3 tracks - they did this in December 2020 - it’s great. Courtney, Michael and Bill all appear in their home studio (we only see one at a time in any shot) and Zev Rose, their current drummer, is at his home in the US. People commented with amusement about how expressionless the youthful-looking Zev is in his performance - but apparently this is because apparently an IT issue meant his original performance was lost, so he had to re-do it separately, concentrating hard to replicate it exactly! Courtney has mentioned that her harsh vocals are naturally very loud, which as I understand it is not the case for all vocalists - she seemed mildly embarrassed about it! It’s clear that she prefers to look unmoved when lip-syncing them in official music videos - as you saw here, when actually performing them, she alters her face shape, jaw and lip positions to affect the pitch. Those mid-phrase and even mid-syllable switches between harsh and clean vocals in the faster tempo final segment are something she added for live gigs - in the single/album track she belts this section in clean vocals with an occasional tiny hint of fry on the loudest notes. In one interview in summer 2020, she mentioned that she had been carrying a vocal injury for about 8 years, from when she started doing harsh vocals in Unicron, her first band (with her brother), when she didn’t really know the correct technique (that band’s late track, Broken Vessels, is really interesting to watch and it’s a very good song, I think). She was invited to replace Krysta Cameron in iwrestledabearonce not long afterwards (Boat Paddle by IWABO with Courtney has a wonderfully daft video, whilst the later The Gift of Death and Green Eyes, both after Michael had also joined, are much heavier and more serious than IWABO had previously been - and much heavier than Spiritbox too). Anyway, I digress - back to the point! In the interview last year when she mentioned the injury, Courtney detailed how careful she is these days with her voice, resting it, speaking quietly and not too much, etc. and having learned better performing techniques. But she was clearly wrestling with a decision on whether to risk surgery, which was looking more and more necessary, as it could possibly alter her voice in an undesirable way. Amazingly, over the winter of 2020-21, the injury finally resolved itself without intervention - a great result and no doubt a great relief too (to fans of Spiritbox also!).

Thanks for putting that all together for me. Honestly the generosity of the core fans of these bands has really overwhelmed me. So many people taking to time to bring me up to speed. It's interesting that you said that she is loud. I guess in retrospect, what I was trying to articulate was not that she sings quiet, but rather that she isn't attempting to be extremely loud. That's really what I mean by her relaxed posture etc. If she was trying to shake the walls you'd see it physically in her body. I guess her natural resonance is just naturally loud. I only just discovered this morning that she is formerly of IWABO, a band I have heard of but haven't heard. I guess I'll have to check them out now! Once I have worked my way through as much Spiritbox material that I can within the format of my videos, I will personally take a real deep dive into Eternal Blue. It's also really interesting that that vocal injury cleared up by itself. Without know much about it, I assume she had nodules. Extremely common even for clean singers. To my knowledge other than surgery, the best solution is rest, a dramatic shift in technique and exercises, and I have heard that there are humming exercises that can help. The biggest factor is time. They are basically callouses that form from the aggressive friction on the cords. If you stop that action, over time the callouses disappear much like the ones on guitar players fingers if you don't play for too long. Can't wait to check out more of their tracks. Thanks again for the info!

I love watching these “lower viewer count” videos and see the real depth that these reactionists and (who I will now go and watch other videos on) what I think is a mix/master/producer break down the quality of the music being integrated in the track. Then I go to the comment section and find comments like this. I LOVE reading about bands and how their music has adapted over time. I fell in love with Spiritbox after listening to eternal blue the track, and has easily become my top 5 favorite band of all time. The sheer quality in vocalism and the impressiveness to just be able to go from harsh to Frye to pure singing is amazing. Not to mention the extremely good quality of actual music and backtracking/production behind the artist makes the band that much better in a whole.

I've been really into progressive metal for the last couple years, but having no real understanding of musical theory makes a lot of the technical aspects of writing this music meaningless to me. I just intuitively like how it sounds. That's why when you talked about the early changes in the verses, I thought it was really interesting. I had never considered that "I just want to hold the flame" could have been sung in the same melody as "Dirty gold the colors change", but it would not have given her time to go into "negative feedback loop". I kind of just hear the song how it is, without knowing why it's appealing to me. Though you did refer to this as good pop songwriting. I do think a lot of their songs on Eternal Blue are simpler or more accessible than earlier stuff, but is there anything "progressive" about a song like this?
@PrymalChaos
@PrymalChaos 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for getting in touch. The sole purpose of this channel was to learn about music like this. I knew if I put it out there, hat in hand, asking for help from the community that people would probably help me out with some info about the genre and the bands. I had no idea how generous these music fans could be with educating me. My concept is that I am completely unaware of the music I'm reacting to, because I feel like it allows people to re-live their first listen vicariously through me. In return I offer what little info I can, in regards to song writing, guitar playing, production etc that I have garnered over way too many years of loving and producing music for myself. I have also managed a studio and worked in a musical instrument shop, so that helps too. So obviously comments like this are so wonderful because I feel like what little I have to offer, may be useful to someone else. It can be tough because I have to come up with this stuff on the fly the first time I hear it, so I actually miss counted that first verse. It's a little more complex than I mentioned. However the concept is the same. That last line is shortened to pull the first line of the next verse forward in time. It's a very savvy thing to do. As far as you feeling like you need a more technical background to appreciate the more progressive stuff, to that I say all you need to appreciate ANY kind of music is two ears and a foot to tap. In some ways I actually envy you more because sometimes it's better to not know how the sausage is made. I remember the good old days when I just liked a song cause it sounded cool. Progressive rock music is defined as a subgenre of rock music that emphasizes ambitious compositions, experimentation, concept-driven lyrics, and musical virtuosity. So often people associate it with bands like Dreamtheater, porcupine tree, etc but there are certainly elements of Spiritbox that tick all of those boxes. I think that they defy classification in many respects but I feel like you could place them in the prog genre. Some might argue that there are a better fit somewhere else, but I'm not really a fan of categorising bands so much. That's why I consider this a reaction channel for bands with extreme or aggressive vocals, rather than "Metalcore, Deathcore, etc" Thanks again for checking in! Hope to see you around the chat!
