FYI, got my GMRS Lic yesterday (oct 27 2021) FCC is STILL charging 70 dollars for the License. your instructions were the only way I was able to figure out the site. Finally a single platform using GMRS to transmit for short range low power comms, high power repeater comms and ALSO scan Fire Rescue (I am with EMS), USCG sector LA/SD on VHF and John Wayne/LAX on the AM Air side. This opens up a whole new world to hear what is going on around me. Have to say that Better Safe was wonderful to deal with to get the right items to allow me to rig it to my uniform vest carrier. BTW, I am hitting a repeater 47 miles from south Orange County CA just using the speaker microphone and the stock antenna.

I’m new to GMRS. I don’t understand how you’re hitting a repeater that far in OC on a handheld. I’m in LA and I can’t even hit one. On simplex I can only get 1.2 miles before the transmission cuts out. What is the secret!? I’m using a raddioty gm-30 btw

Hello Randy. Thank You, again for taking a moment to answer a quick question, about this particular radio, and the Smiley antenna overheating at the knurled knob and mount. You, mentioned I should contact BSR, so i did, and I'd like to share with you their response. Thank You, again, and after our conversation, I became a super supporter, of your channel. Donald: WRCY565 Detroit, MI. Hi Donald, I hope you meant "but NOT enough to burn your finger." The UV9G is designed for about a 50% duty cycle, so as long as you aren't TX non-stop, it's normal for it to get fairly warm. Since the antenna base is metal and the connector is metal and connected to the chassis, which is the heat-sink, it's normal for it to spread the hear there. If it ever gets too hot, the radio will do a thermal shut down automatically, but to prolong the life, it's good to give it a break here and there, especially if it starts to get a bit toasty. :) Mark.

The HAM and GMRS radio community has left a lot to be desired. They expect you to know everything before you know it and I’ve found that most “radio channels” on KZbin are not as honest or as transparent as they should be. That being said… YOU, NOTA, are the one I’m learning the most from, the one who is the most transparent, certainly the best humor (dry humor is an acquired taste, but I was raised on Monte Python), and have become the ONLY KZbin radio channel I actually TRUST!! I ordered 2 pairs of radios from Mark @ BSR…a pair of UV9P’s & a pair of UV9G’s - still learning my way around the menu functions etc but other than being popular and on back order for awhile shipping was fast once they came into stock. The HAM’s are for emergency use only (until we get our Technician Licenses) but the GMRS will be used frequently. Radios seem very well constructed with very clear speakers…cannot speak about battery life or range yet. I like that I can swap my accessories between the 9P’s & 9G’s (extra batteries, speaker mics, 12V battery delete kits, etc). I’ll be testing the 9G’s on Oct 10…I’m running mine while elk hunting with speaker mics plugged into Otto NoizeBarrier Micros for hearing enhancement, blast protection & coms.

I'm a new hand radio collector. I currently own UV-82, UV- 5R, BF888, and several more. I'm not a licensed operator. I live in Boston area. G'day to you from Australia. Talking about radio manufacturing. I only buy radios made in Australia 🇦🇺. In fact a company called GME manufacturer a couple of UHF CB's here I own both of them. The one in the car is unreal GME xrs-330c has Bluetooth works on 477MHz with a 402-520MHz rx only & a GME tx6600s handheld 5w same spec as the other one but no Bluetooth.. Great radio's.

Totally off topic, but I just watched "Fate of the Furious" for the 1st time since getting into ham....I mean GMRS radios. I know your passion for the UV-5R. That's what the team uses. There is a whole rack of them at 1:09:12....and they all have the flashlight on! But nobody ever licks one, which would be great. Keep up the great videos!

I was told by my local GMRS club here in AZ that they prefer their users not use the Roger Beep on club repeaters. Is this a global setting on the radio, or can it be set as desired on each individual memory, depending on the preference of the repeater operator? I'm guessing no.

I just bought the KG-UV9G pro, and it looks like that Smiley High-Gain GMRS antenna compromises the water resistance of the radio since it does not seal down with a gasket. Probably doesn't matter in most cases....I guess.

This only has an IP55 Water Resistant rating where as the Wouxun KG-935G you reviewed has a IP66 Water Proof rating. Even with all the great features, wouldn't the Water Proof and Dust Proof rating make the Wouxun KG-935G a better choice. I did get my GMRS license and did pay the $70. Thanks!

If the IP rating is an important factor to you, then yes, if not, then no.. Each person has different requirements so it depends on what your requirements are.

No on both counts, but the new UV9GX has Roger Beep. the UV9P and new UV9PX can be unlocked, but it's not legal to TX on GMRS with a Ham radio, even though many preppers do this for use in a SHTF situation.

Hi Mr R..since this radio has a fancy receiving circuitry board..can I just slap a external speaker/mic..mobile antenna on my truck and call it a day..my cheapo Mobile base (xx25x) driving me nuts with the squelch failure ..it’s either too sensitive or deaf!!!freaking receive bar graph is 5x5 and loves to pick up lots of statics…. Yes, just get a battery eliminator, a speaker mic, and a coax jumper to match your external antenna, and you have a nice low power scanning GMRS radio in the vehicle.

I bough one of these and it froze up on me after about 2 weeks of use and finally figuring it out.. I was going through the menu options and seeing what the various functions did. After selecting one of the options, the radio got stuck in transmit mode, without me pressing ptt. All the buttons were unresponsive and it began heating up. I took the battery out for a while and put it back in... No luck.. still stuck.. No combinations of buttons would undo whatever I did.. And the trouble shooting guide in the manual isn't worth the paper its printed on... Sending it back... Kinda bummed though because I really liked the functionality and ability to listen to so many bands.

I just purchased my GMRS license and I'm exited about this radio. You have the most informative videos and helped me make what I believe was the right choice. So I'm a beginner/ prepper and this radio I believe will work for me, however, in most of your videos you recomend a " roger beep," this radio does not have one. I believe you didn't mention it in this "review." Is it necessary or not to have a "roger beep" in a radio?

The roger beep is necessary to help you identify the arrogant idiots that somehow think they own the airwaves. Sadly, without the roger beep feature you will never feel the joy of having one of those ass-nazis demand that you turn your roger-beep off because for some, as-yet unexplained reason, they think they are in charge of what you do with your radio.
