This is the leadership GRMS users needed. I've been trying to figure out how to organize RV'ers to use a standard GMRS/FRS channel for road travel for some time. I full-time RV and we're always on the road. I've wanted a way to communicate with other RV'ers or folks in traffic during our travels for a long time. I'm going to implement this as a standard around my circle of fellow RV'ers and ask my RV YT friends to spread the word.

Totally agree, the same boat, an RV snow-bird hear. I started a post on one of those GMRS sites and got totally disgusted. I have learned a lot on those sites reading/learning, but will not post for fear of a sad-ham infection.

Oh just what we need. A bunch of RVers talking on channel 19 about crap most of us don’t care about. The great thing about CB’s channel 19 is that it was for truckers. May be someone needs to officially designate a channel for RVers and leave 19 for truckers.

This is perfect! Easy to remember especially if you used CB. So, to get the word out, create a bumper sticker saying “I monitor the official GMRS travel channel 19” this way the guy behind you knows how to contact you if he is unaware of the official GMRS travel channel. So simple it's scary. I'm glad that's solved. -- My only variation on this is that I transmit CTCSS 141.3. The reason being is that if anyone is monitoring that channel, but using 'travel tone' they'll still hear me. They'll also hear me if they're NOT using receive tone. I don't use CTCSS/DCS on my receive side, just on TX.

Hooray! Someone has finally stepped up to the plate and announced the on road gmrs channel 19, with off road channel as 16. The Ham world uses 146.460 as their off road channel - and I never hear anything on that frequency. I am really starting to like my gmrs so much better than my ham radio. So much cheaper and used 99% more than the ham radio. Plus the antenna never gets hit by tree branches.

As a relatively new GMRS user from Michigan I feel strongly discriminated against since I am affected by both lines A and C. Therefore I may be restricted from using channels 19, 21, 27 and 29 because America bowed to Canadian pressure. Makes me want to drive 30 miles east, key my mike on one of these channels and see if they can catch me. Another January 6th in the making…

I have my scanners on all day and rarely hear anybody on gmrs. Once in a while I hear a couple of kids with their bubble pack walmart radios, but not very often. On my CB I hear all kinds of people, CB will never die or be replaced. Is making a comment with a link not allowed? I posted a link to an FCC document that should have stuff about GMRS and "Line A" but was conspicuous in it's lack of GMRS and I was hoping you might be able to clarify the whole "Line A" thing for me. What little info I can find about this "Line A" seems outdated and vague AF at best. But... that comment was deleted (or maybe I didn't actually post it, I was tired AF when I was writing it lol) so is it okay to post a link here? If it's not okay to post links here, do you have an alternate way I could show it to you? It's just an FFC chart of frequencies that are restricted near the Canadian border that has nothing at all in the GMRS range. It makes me wonder if this "Line A" stuff has changed to no longer include GMRS... but read somewhere that "Line A" is still listed directly on the GMRS license itself. Is that true? I don't have my license yet so I can't check. Waiting for them to ACTUALLY drop the price lol. If anyone wants to see the list of frequencies I'm talking about, it's the fcc gov site slash canadian-agreements-frequency and you might be interested to see that of the listed frequency ranges, it stops at 459 MHz and picks up again at 470 MHz. EDIT: The one and only video I have been able to find that makes mention of any of this mentions the GMRS License bit and that it only applies to channels 19 and 21. Yet those frequencies are still not on that FCC document that I mentioned above for some reason. I know some group tried (and largely failed I think) to make FRS channel 20 (but with codes for some reason) the unofficial FRS travel channel... you used the logic of "4x4" to justify channel 16 for off-road use... maybe use similar logic and suggest GMRS channel 20 for the main road channel as being "1 better/higher than CB" or maybe suggest a power setting? I think 19 and 21 can be used north of Line A if it's no more than 5W, but again I'm not sure b/c there is so little info that I've been able to find so far.

Hi Randy, came across your channel as I was looking into comms for my truck for hunting Got a license so I’m extremely new to the radio community but after watching your videos I purchased the k805g as my first HT loo looking to buy a mobile for my truck what do you recommend? Question on this road channel topic, basically just put the radios on ch. 19 and monitor for others to talk to? This is not a repeater channel right. Sorry if this falls in the stupid question category. Still learning.

The purpose of a "road" channel or "Highway" channel is for when you're driving somewhere and want to get road conditions, make friends, see who else is driving, etc, everyone has a common channel to be on.. So when you're driving across country alone, put the radio on ch19 and listen, or call out and hopefully someone else is listening. It is not a repeater channel. it is good, old fashioned, "regular", radio-to-radio 'simplex'.

I run both in my truck . GMRS I use for work and the cb is mostly for fun to talk to truckers I know and listen to interesting people around the area. I did not even realize this had to be a question. Chanel 19 is and will always be the travel channel

I hereby ratify channel 19, and 16 when off road (I have a Bronco Badlands Sas) I use the Wouxan KG-1000G+ On the Back window of my Bronco I have a reflective decal “GMRS Channels - 12, 19, 16” On the “B” side of my radio It scans those 3 channels constantly, plus my personal repeater channel, and my families/friends radio channel we chose for ourselves.

Since I have ventured into GMRS radio after most of my radio life involving CB, I have often thought that a GMRS community channel will be needed when most people eventually gravitate to GMRS so I naturally agree with using GMRS 19 as the travel channel. Also, I have used CB channel 16 for my off-road communications in the past because of the obvious 4X4 but I thought I had invented that! It must be true that great minds do think alike.

Randy, I have noticed an inconsistency in your channel background / closing image. Why is the light source for the first person seem to be from their upper right while the light source for the other people is from their direct left ? BTW: I am a happy HNSH (Happy Non Sad Ham) ! Thank you for the official decree‼️CH 19 it is! As for some people north of LINE A. It’s no longer a legal concern. Ch 19 is also used in CANADA 🇨🇦 but with a 2 watt limitation unlike our 50 watt limitation. So Line A restrictions no longer apply because Public Safety or commercial frequency concerns in CANADA are no longer valid since 462.65 is now only GMRS 2 watts in CANADA‼️So there “GMRS experts” Queen Xenu has spoken! When people argue this tune always plays in my head from the Jesse Kelly Radio Show! kzbin.info/www/bejne/nIC4mp-uf7ygaJY Where do we get that awesome shirt? CHEERS mate!!! WRMB766/N9DCW

The restriction may be outdated and no longer, or at least hard to find, in the FCC regulations but it is still sadly in the Waivers/Conditions section of new GMRS licenses.

@@stellated I think it is still printed on the license because gubmint is SLOOOOOWWWW in updating the forms. however it is no longer mentioned in the latest rules. Look at the bottom of your license. it will have the form number and date the form was published. If yours is like mine (i renewed in 2016, the rules changed in 2017) the form date is Aug 2007. Maybe someone with a license issued after the rule change can comment on the form date on there license and if it is newer if the line a verbiage is still there.

GMRS will NEVER be able to replace CB fully , it is way to limited, no skips , no sideband, only 22 channel's and it's licensed and it needs repeaters as it's simplex range is way too limited way more then CB, what it WILl replace effectively is cell phones becuase when cell service goes down cell phones die , GMRS/FRS will be the best alternative. for short range and local communications
