This is a quick review of the Wouxun KG-1000M Mobile MURS radio - the worlds first MURS mobile radio. The Wouxun KG1000M MURS mobile radio is a new radio from Wouxun based on the KG-1000G design, so it has most of the features of the KG-1000G, but with MURS guts instead of GMRS.

On Walmart and MURS: Motorola makes a 7 channel MURS radio exclusively for sale to(not for sale at)Walmart, the RDM2070d. That's why Walmart uses MURS, Motorola made some kind of deal with them. While the radio has 7 channel slots in its memory, it duplicates channels 4&5 with different default CTCSS codes to get there. If you do come across an RDM2070d for sale on Ebay, just know it's almost definitely stolen.

I used to talk with a friend on murs all the time. One day he walked into Walmart with his radio on his belt. When one of the employees heard their radios coming from his radio security stopped him and ordered him to turn it off because they said he wasn't authorized to be on their frequency. It wasn't like he was talking to them on it, but I can't help but wonder if all Walmart employees and security are this well educated.

We (various volunteer radio and SAR groups) used MURS to support a county active shooter exercise. We were stationed around the perimeter of the exercise to keep people out. MURS worked just fine. Thanks for covering MURS. It doesn't get much respect.

These use some of the old public service band freq's. So how about setting this up a base station & running it out of the house with a 12-volt dc power supply. What do you think about that? I'm just thinking as my wife is homebound & I go out & about on our 5 acres since we live in a cell dead zone

Could very easily and legally do that. With a large antenna on the roof it would have great range, likely far better than the range I got in my testing, depending on your terrain.

funny Walmart buy me and others use the FRS/GMRS radios. I have MURS HT units from Amazon . we get 2 miles at best. only have set of 2. FRS/GMRS work much better for us. even in low power mode. still have not herd any one else on MURS . that in western NY .

Firestik Antenna Company makes mobile antennas specifically for MURS. They also make a base station antenna!!! I have wondered why Midland has not converted their little GMRS 5 watt simplex only unit to MURS. It would be an easy transition. Maybe Wouxun will generate some more interest in a good but nearly deserted set of five frequencies.

I appreciate the real world/worst case scenario range testing. It makes the distance you measure actually mean something to me in getting a sense of range. The best case scenario ranges don’t mean anything so it’s like no range reference is given at all.

I agree, he's one of the few guys that consistently test various models of radios under similar "poor" or "real world" conditions. Heck, a cheap BAOFENG can talk to satellites in outer space, doesn't mean you can talk to your hunting buddies over a hill.

Actually, many years ago Motorola manufactured a 2 watt VHF mobile for use on fork lifts, utility vehicles, and such in the Business and Industrial Radio Services. Most of these were on itinerant frequencies (some of which are now MURS channels).

The difference in propagation between 150mhz and 460mhz is 9db, so the 2watts on vhf is equivalent to 16 watts on uhf..

I know you can't legally transmit on gmrs with that radio. You said you can't transmit on gmrs and I'm curious, is the radio locked so you can't actually do it and someone who doesn't know better can't accidentally do it or is it unlocked and capable just illegal?
