A couple summers ago, we lost power for 3 days due to wind. I used an old Radio Shack inverter on the car battery and a long extention into the house to run my laptop, modem, wifi and charge the cell phones. I made a promise to my self, to by a generator before the end of the year (you could't find one for a couple hundred miles around during the outage) and I did. I also bought two 100w solar panels and controller and 3 110AH heavy duty forklift batteries along with a 1000w pure sinewave inverter. One of the batteries is on the DC backup sump pump but can be used to run the blower on the natural gas furnace. Also have a dozen portable batteries. THe best one runs my CPAP in outages and when camping.

I have both the UHF and VHF versions of this radio and they are fantastic. Dead simple and do exactly what you would need an inexperienced operator to do. They are tough radios and have battery life for days. Program them up with some simplex frequencies or your local repeaters and go to town. Have I tested them on MURS and GMRS frequencies with a dummy load in a steel container and do they transmit? Yes. Would I use them on these frequencies to transmit outside the container? Absolutely not. Am I a licensed HAM, also yes.

Thank you for giving a clear and accurate review of the RT-29. I am a quasi sad ham, as well as a licensed GMRS operator, and was confused with the advertisement information from Retevis as I did not see any mention of a Ham license being required to operate the radio when there is no actual emergency. Your review very clearly pointed out when the radio could legally be operated and when it could not be legally operated by a person that did not have a Ham license. In general, I find your reviews to be enlightening, somewhat humerous, and always entertaining. Thanks!
@chrisgullett4332 Жыл бұрын
You need a license to use it, period. Using radios in emergencies covers all radio services and radios, not just this radio. An emergency means a real emergency, not something minor. Lost in he woods and starving with a broken leg, that is the type of emergency that would allow you to use a ham radio without a license. You can but any radio, you just cannot transmit on any radio, unless it is an emergency. I think the reason it says nothing about a license is because this radio has not been certified by the FCC, which means you're not supposed to use the radio even with a license. I looked on the FCC page, and this radio has not been certified.
@TheNotaRubicon Жыл бұрын
It would seem that a lot of people don't care about any of that and based on the FCC's complete lack of enforcement over the last 10 years, the FCC doesn't care either.
@chrisgullett4332 Жыл бұрын
@@TheNotaRubicon Complete lack of enforcement? Is that what you were told, because that is not true. The facts show that a lot of people get fined and even lose their right to own a radio. You should stop believing everything you are told. Some have even went to jail. My personal favorite is the guy who had already been fined years ago for harassing people on the CB. Then years later they catch him again. They gave him a warning, then out of nowhere he starts doing it again, but even worse, so they fined him and took away his radio privileges for a couple years. Then he does it again, but this time he is challenging the government while transmitting, and he ended up getting arrested for it. I have personally seen countless cases where people have been fined, lost radio privileges and even jailed. They are in fact enforcing it, just like they enforce TV and broadcast radio. TV networks and radio stations also get fined all the time for breaking the riles. You think they're not paying attention, but they are always watching and listening. They will literally come and measure your antenna to make sure your antenna is not too big, and will even make you take it down, move it or whatever else to make sure your antenna is in accordance with the rules. Those people claiming the FCC is not enforcing the rules, are either lying or misinformed. Get on your radio and start doing things you are not supposed to do for an entire day, and see how fast they send you a letter or knock on your door. Prove to yourself they are not enforcing the rules. Come on chicken, do it.
@TheNotaRubicon Жыл бұрын
Thankfully the FCC, by law, is required to make every enforcement public, which they do in their public enforcement database which is easily searchable by anyone with a web-browser and an internet connection. Apparently you dont know this, or have not looked through it, because if you had, you would know there the FCC has enforced basically nothing since 2012. You people claiming the FCC is enforcing all these rules and people are are getting in trouble (since 2012) are either lying or misinformed.
@chrisgullett4332 Жыл бұрын
@@TheNotaRubicon Oh I just remembered a lot of the January 6th crowd was fined and charged with improper radio use. The FCC even shutdown repeaters in the DC area that day because of the radio usage. The myth the FCC is not enforcing rules is absurd.

@W2IRT3 жыл бұрын
Correct. Out of the box and without reprogramming, the RT-29s are on amateur frequencies and any kind of encryption is illegal. Doesn't matter if it's simple inversion that's been around since the Second World War, analog rolling code, DVP, AES, or FHDSS. If the intent is to obscure communications in any way it's illegal. Even non-standard 10-codes and the like are a no-no. If your intent is to be covert and code your messages in any way it's against the FCC regs. Interestingly, though, there are a number of proprietary amateur digital voice modes that are not entirely mainstream and whose CODECs aren't in scanners. Things like Yaesu System Fusion VW mode, or Icom's D-star, for example. They're not encrypted or coded in any way, but they're also impossible to monitor unless you have a compatible radio.
@martirjd3 жыл бұрын
Really. What is DMR or Fusion? What the FCC does say is that we can not talk in codes. For example: "the deer has jumped the fence" which would be code talk to really mean that "a man is cheating on his wife". Usually code talk is done for nefarious purposes.
@mrbyamile69733 жыл бұрын
There has been some "code talk" on our local repeater but mostly just talking about politics or disparaging local politicians, hams tend to be right leaning and our state is being taken over by left wing craziness. So even though political speak is generally not supposed to be talked about on ham radio, how can we talk about much else with the debauchery going on in the news right now?

To have an amateur radio station, means that you have an amateur radio station license period which in turn means that you have to be a licensed amateur radio operator. When I first receive my amateur radio license they sent me booth and amateur radio station license and a wallet license. Now these must be printed out, however it still applies when you print out the PDF it has both a station license and a wallet license. That way you don't have to carry around a large document roughly 8.5 x 5-6 inches

10 watts is a lot of power for a handheld, and the power drop on the dummy load test could be indicative of overheating. Could you do the test again with a longer key down time? How hot did the rig get during use? What military grade certification did it get? Interesting looking HT, might even be worth it to many. I would like to know moar.
@Texas1FlyBoy3 жыл бұрын
The slight power drop during transmit was more likely that the battery was being drained. The more you transmit, the more it uses the battery. 😉
@N2YTA3 жыл бұрын
The measuring equipment we use is not calibrated laboratory grade items. If they were they would be extremely expensive. The stuff we use is “for reference only”. The most accurate way of measuring RF power is to transmit into a dummy load of a known value and monitor the waveform on an oscilloscope, calculate the RMS voltage, and then calculate the power using ohm’s law. The voltage measured is likely to be very accurate any error would be in the value of the load. We say the dummy load is 50 ohms; however that isn’t the case at every frequency. If the radio is supposed to produce ten watts and you measure nine the radio is functioning just fine.

What would the advantage be with UHF versus VHF? Would range be more with one? I know it has the same power. But doesn’t VHF have more potential to skip off the atmosphere and IHF have more ability to penetrate objects?

I see it’s been a minute…but just received my RT29’s. I find your KZbin format, awesome, hilarious and informative, for that, THANK YOU! My question before I attempt to program as a newbie, will I be able to program the WATT per channel for ease of use? If not clear, I’m wondering if I can make CH 1, 5 Watt, and CH 2-5, 1 Watt, and CH 6-16, 10 Watts… and so on. I’m not licensed, nor do I plan to be. This is for emergency except for the 1 Watt Channels, which are intended for my brother and I while on our Dual Sport ADV rides. Thanks for your insight…

IIRC, using the software you can set each channel to a different power level, L, M, or H.

Thought about getting my HAM. Excited and all. Got my radios setup and programmed for the repeaters and started listening. After a while, I found out all these nerds talk about is radio equipment. That's it. So, na., not interested anymore. But prepped for real shit.

Heard it best described as a hobby that uses itself to talk about itself.

GF, you need to get you a radio capable of hf (1.8 - 30 MHz) reception with SSB capability on receive. Then you can hear what REAL hams talk about!!!! Hemorrhoids, back trouble, prostate trouble, incontinence, headaches, fecal impaction, and much, much, more. If you aren't already there, you will be chomping at the bit to upgrade to General or Extra so you can partake of these conversations.

The test is a piece of cake. I watched 3 u-tube videos and now I am passing the practice tests. I just want to get the real equipment for when the SHTF. Its also a little bit better than GMRS equipment.

It's kinda like sitting in the forest listening to the good ol' CB boys. Talking about all manner of medical condition, and admittedly amazing-sounding meals.

Have the same retevis rt29. In a village where lives my father I could speak to him above the forest, maximum range was 2,6km.
