Thanks for the update and your thoughts. In my humble opinion, people watch you and see someone who is the "real deal". Your not showing off your bushcraft skills or how long you can endure hardship. Rather, you are sharing your path to self reliance and how others can do the same thing. I think this channel also helps people to better understand the type and amount of work needed to exist and thrive off-grid while enjoying the peace and beauty of your surroundings. In my estimation (and judging from the comments over the years), you have had a positive influence on scores of viewers who have been looking for someone to "show me how to get off the rat race". Well done, Sir. Soon it will be time to preserve Summer's bounty and stock the brand new cold cellar. Next thing your know, it'll be time to hang Maple sap buckets. Maybe even find a chance to harvest meat. Thanks again and looking forward to your progress. Cheers.

yes he is using his bushcraft skills and his woodsman skills ... and his building skills ... but unlike so many others he is not out for personal recognition by others he is all about personal satisfaction for getting a job done he has been working on by hand for so long ... I have seen many different ways to start a fire reliably ... I learned many different ways during survival training ... and I have used most of them if not all of them .. I can practically build a lean to shelter in my sleep ... seen it and done it so many times ... it is like calling a cardboard box a fort and playing in that ... what he is doing here is taking the skills he has and applying them to tougher tasks to provide a comfortable life over time and bringing us along for the trip

Yes! Shawn's journey reads and unfolds like a documentary, not an "entertainment show" about completing some bushcraft challenges. I love the way the project is documented. I have learned so much without Shawn having to talk through the process constantly. Just a determined man focused on his goal, such a pleasure to watch. My dream has always been to have my own land and live semi-self sufficiently, and while my dream isn't necessarily about moving to total wilderness, Shawn's journey has been and continues to be an inspiration towards that goal. Maybe I'll one day build at least something by using basic hand tools, even if it's just an outhouse lol

With regards to being "Slow", The Samurai Carpenter said in a recent video when asked why he was hand sharpening tools rather than using a grinder, "Why is everyone in such a hurry to get everything done and then die?". That made a lot of sense to me when he said it. Who cares how long something takes to get done. Enjoying the process is what matters.

The Samurai has many gold nuggets in the comments he's made over the years. He along with James here have been an inspiration in their crafts in totally different ways. Both have come from major adversities, although completely on different ends of the spectrum, and have come to something that is peaceful and serene in both their actions in thought and process and way of life. I watch them both, and a few others, who are true and raw in what they say and do.

When I was a child, some 75 years ago, we summered at our acreage in the country. I spent my days following my Dad as he trimmed trees, opened paths, picked fruit and enjoyed nature - teaching as we went. There was lots to see as a horticulturist had owned the property long before it came to our family. I enjoy the peace and nature and hard work and diligence and wisdom of your channels, Shawn. You help me remember the past and also to look to the future. Much appreciated.

My fiancée and I just bought a great permanent retreat on over an acre of land in a small town in Quebec. We just had to get out of the city of Brampton. The noise and congestion have become intolerable, but we had to wait for her retirement. Not quite as isolated or as solitude as your world, but 100% better than our current situation. I'll continue writing my books and pursuing my new hobby of making wooden crossbows in my new garage workshop. You are a great inspiration and example for others to emulate. Keep up the good work.

I've been watching you for years now and you've always been inspirational, even if you don't get why. That's the best kind really, when a person isnt even trying to inspire yet does. I believe you to be a humble man, but know you inspire and motivate people everyday. I've seen it for years in the comments too. I hope one day I can get back into nature more. I was well on my way 6 years ago and then wrecked my truck one night and almost died. 3 amputations, 3rd & 4th degree burns on 50% of my body, a dozen+ broken bones, a collapsed left lung, displaced joints, etc. I lost my only vehicle, my house, job, girlfriend, etc. I was in the hospital for almost 6 months and had 10 surgeries. Its been 5.5 years since the wreck and I'm still fighting to just walk( in prosthetics) again. I'll get there one day though and your videos help me to keep my eyes on the prize. I cant stand this city living 😭. Take care buddy and thank you for everything you do.

Inspirational,,,,some people have lots, some people have little,,,and some people can’t but love to watch someone else succeed in their dreams. I’ve been watching since the start, and to say the lest, it’s amazing watching you build the big puzzle of life. You wonder why we’re watching? It’s inspiring to watch one man push the boundaries of life, it’s great to watch and see how our ancestors must have started a homestead this way! I have found by watching you that I look at things differently,,,the patience you have, the detail you put put into everything you do, it’s amazing! It’s teaching me patience,,,I’ve slowed down building my house, I’ve been taking extra time to do it right, normally I put it together as fast as I can, and end up fixing it again down the line. Your teaching us! Your entertaining us with your knowledge….your wondering why we’re watching? Why did we watch grizzly Adams. Little house on the prairie? Simpler times, all this needs to come back to us, for sum it can, for some it can’t! Someone told me they were Bored the other day! Lol. Honey that word is not ever on my radar, no time for that! I hope your here for a long time, because I still have things to learn…thank you for you time and inspiration!

My plans are to work here a couple of years, save up to buy a bigger property on the very edge of a tiny village and live a self sustaining life as much as possible. Obviously it's way harder to get a remote and wooded property here in Central Europe, but a man can dream. My goal is to plant as many trees as possible. So you're my biggest inspiration. You are the most interesting man I know. Talented, articulate and I like to think you do things the way I would. With thought, seeing the finished project first, not rushing through the important stuff. I never get tired of listening and watching. You are a gift to many and I, for one, am grateful to have access to your channels. Never miss a video.

You always calm me down. I love Canada too an can't go there anymore. When I was a kid my dad had a work shop. I'd hear sawing then I'd hear, send Peggy down here. I was his helper. I had to get him tools an hold stuff down while he was sawing. It was interesting watching him build things. No talking except about how to make whatever he was making. He built our house an 2 garage's. He did all the sidewalks an built a cement pool for us. I really liked seeing how to build the pool. Thank you

I am fortunate to have inherited the 5 acres of an old farm where I grew up. It was purchased by my parents in 1937 who moved there w/ my 2 older brothers. It is the house and barn. Daddy planted trees as farms came w/ fields and not trees. I still have the large south meadow along a street and the even larger north meadow along the opposite property line. I do a lot of mowing w/ my garden tractor and also have a large cart to load with whatever. BTW, it is off the main road through Morgantown, WV where my late father taught chemistry at WVU. I have my own oasis, but can walk to a grocery store. I became a botanist w/ 3 degrees, but also love sewing and tailor my suits and evening clothes as I need them for DAR functions. Like you, I have a number of interests which keep me busy. Recently, I have learned the joys of battery operated tools: chain saw, garden cultivator, hedge trimmer (for briar thickets, etc.), 10' pole saw, serious string trimmer and leaf blower (for those fall leaves which go on the garden to be tilled in w/ the large rear-tine tiller). Loved hearing your talk w/ so many of my personal traits.

I'm also a Bay St. reject (left Toronto for the Ottawa Valley 2 years ago tmo actually) and I appreciate the simplicity in your delivery and the shared values. I'm really digging the new Shawn James philosophy series. The similar geography and keeping up with Cali contribute to yours being my fave channel. Thank you for the increased output of late and best of luck getting what you need to get done before the snow flies! This week is suppose to have fantastic weather in this region. Lots of stuff to do on the property that you encourage me to get out and do. Much appreciation and respect sir.

I’ve wanted to live in a log cabin since I was 9 years old, like hearing the geese, and the wind through the fall leaves, and you don’t yell, and I like seeing progress, I’ve read all the Foxfire books, about pioneer life and methods in the Appalachians, and I’m rather stuck in an urban spot due to my 6 grown kids moving here, so I traded my outdoor interests for hanging out with them frequently, and you are one of my mental trips to the wilderness. I also read the whole Lewis and Clark journal, etc... and think the outdoors and pioneer lifestyle is the best. Carry on!

I remember moving into a cozy little studio cottage, back in 2002, and lived on my own for the first time in my life. I stayed for 9 years, 6 of those on my own. It was simple, peaceful, blissful. It changed everything. I never went back to drama or complicated crap.

One of the things that attracted me to both of your channels was that I too have a passion for woodworking. In recent years I have opted to work on a few smaller projects that would be an attractive item for someone else to purchase...potentially. But mostly...taking into consideration my mental and physical challenges due to my time with the Canadian Forces...I find comfort turning wood into something that others may enjoy. I look forward to watching you - as you mold wood into a homestead you can enjoy.

I have bass fished for about twenty five years. Started with a Jon boat then a small bass tracker. So at about 50 wanted to fish more but need more exercise. So bought a fishing kayak and started fishing in tournaments. So after 5 kayaks all Hobies found what I believe is the best. It’s their newest model called a Lynx. Had to drive three states away to find one. I have been retired for three years now and can fish during the week sometimes being the only one on the lake. A passion is a great thing to have and enjoy in the peaceful outdoors.

I watch these 2 channels because they are allll the nature and peace and quiet that I'm not able to access here right now. I miss the woods so much. You can't really get land in the UK, it's bonkers expensive, planning permission is super restrictive, and there's not alot of woods to around anyway, or land for that matter. Too many people on this island and too many sheep eating everything out in nature lol. This and a few other channels have inspired me to set a new life goal though, I want to work with my hands more, I really enjoy it, but don't have many skills, so I'm hopefully going to get some skills, and start working towards a more outdoor orientated life, it's always made me happy. But for now, my lot is here next to a road, amongst the lawnmowers and hedge trimmers and noise. So for now, thank goodness, there is SHAWN!!

Shawn you are so right ! If we all can take something away from this pandemic is that we all can do with less and its ok. That is absolutely why your videos are so interesting. You are showing the quality of life that people have been missing out on over time with everyone’s focus on progress. Where I am in central Maine people who vacation here from all over the North East have come since the start of the pandemic worked remotely and realized how they don’t need to live in the city and they won’t perish if they don’t have a coffee shop on every corner with WiFi. Hiking trails, kayaking, fishing etc. have never been busier. People are loving the peace and solitude of the outdoors. I work at a ski area and last winter the lodge was only open to get food and go out to a picnic table. No lodge activities at all. People were limited to outside only and realized that after being stuck at home the fresh air was great. With limited amenities the ski area had one of its best years. I think it’s a lesson learned. 👍👍

Hi Shawn, I like both versions of your videos. On one hand, I see the hands on process if the builds and that keeps me inspired and give me a certain "know-how" on how to proceed on my own homestead (the Kootenay mountains in BC) . On the other, I get to hear your perspectives on life and other things. It's joy to hear. Both channels inspire me in my own endeavours. Thank you for the time and effort your put into them.

Shawn you are a very talented man. Not only because of your bush craft skills but also your hunting skills, cooking skills and most importantly, your video editing skills which is what makes it possible for people like me to watch and enjoy what you are doing. I agree 100% with you in that people NEED to find things to do especially when we are getting old. So many retirees get depressed because they are bored and lonely and never learned new skills or acquired hobbies to entertain themselves. Sad. My motto has always been:" Happiness is someone to love, something to look forward to, something to do and someone to help."
