First of all, I'm 71 and living a simple life in the country. I can't imagine not growing some of my own food, or breathing in fresh air that smells like balsam trees, or shuffling through deep autumn leaves on my favorite trails with my little dog. I was made to use my muscles and that's when I feel most alive. I may not be able to be as productive as I was 20 years ago, but I get immense satisfaction in doing all I can to maintain my small homestead on my own. I find I tire more easily and find muscles I never knew I had when using a hand saw, but I also know I need to rest when I've done enough. The joy is in the effort, not the result. Best wishes to you and your family.

I’m right there with you, although not 70 yet! Our home is only on 2/3 of an acre, but we have a nice size garden, and I’m happiest when shoveling and sifting compost, or digging in the dirt! Last summer when I harvested my garlic, the combination of the smell of garlic and the smell of the soil was intoxicating!

I'm 69 and my husband is 71. We live on a small rural parcel, where we hope to stay for the duration. We have a dozen chickens. We just stacked 3 cords of wood. (OK so we ache a bit.) We grow a huge garden and most years I can up at least 200 jars of tomatoes, green beans and other veggies, jams and syrups. We raise a 12 year old grandson (who likes to play video games although he is active in many real life sports many of which my husband coached.) We have 9 other grandkids who love to visit 'the farm'. I have no intention of fading away into virtual reality. I doubt my adult children will either. Two of them do not even have TVs. I love watching you build your homestead in the wilderness. You are an inspiration.

What a surprise, I just had the same thought about 4 days ago. I moved from a big city, bought a small piece of land and started creating a beautiful garden from scratch and am still busy renovating the little house on it. A huge wild reserve is almost at my doorstep and I go there regularly just to enjoy nature or for picking some mushrooms. A week ago my former brother in law paid me a visit and suggested I take up golf as a hobby… all I can think is I don’t need any hobby, my life is so full of reality I don’t want any distraction from it. Only when I interact with nature I feel like I’m very much alive :)

Since I have become house-bound with health issues the world of virtual reality is thrust upon you. That isn’t not the world for me. I have always believed that once folks started to communicate through the internet and other methods of technology, the distance between us has grown. We don’t seem to make that human connection anymore and we all need to feel that from one another. It feels sad.

To feel the warm sun on your face and the wind through your hair, smell the pines after a rain, to experience the quiet and stillness of the forest, to hear the rush of the water, see the shy, gentle deer and the diligent bushy tail. The thing that passes between me and the land is timeless and profound and essential. And I can't get my kids away from their phones and video games. It's like pulling teeth to get them to go fishing. Stress level comes down three points just looking at the view behind you professor, thanks.

It took a hundred years to go from the horse and buggy days to put humans on the moon and change the world to a computerized society and be able to transmit thoughts and images across the globe via the internet. If it only takes ten to go from here to what Shawn is telling us it will be like, then we are in a world of hurt and we will probably find out if the God we worship is really all powerful and will continue to sit by and let his creations change the face of the world and destroy what he created. A lot of people are losing their faith because things have gotten so bad and God has not stepped in and put a stop to the folks that are making it harder and harder for the average persons to exist. All it would take to renew their faith and make the world more livable and peaceful is for God to make himself known and show the inhabitants of the planet earth who is in charge. Without that we are surely doomed to be slaves to machines.

Donna I grew up in Chicago and I'm about 45 miles away from all the bad stuff. I always wanted to get into a home where I felt safe. A little over a year ago I bought a home that backs to 40K acres of forest and is pretty secluded. I finally feel safe. I'm gardening for the first time in my life and loving it. With all the crazy stuff going on in the world it's easy to tune it out now that I don't have to worry about my family and I at home. The only visitors I get are wildlife and we love it.

I'm 70 years old and I've been part of the virtual world called Second Life for 15+ yrs.. Its not a game its an online community that offers those of us with physical limitations a way to get out and socialize with others. In my case its also offered me a creative outlet building and designing things. I've designed virtual clothing and sold it in my own store for avatars to purchase with the virtual currency used in Second Life. No, its not like being out in nature which I mourn because camping and hiking was something I loved doing but just can't anymore. I would rather be living out in nature out in the woods but watching you is as close as I can get now. My now unattainable dream was a cabin in the woods with a sunny clearing for growing food, I'm happy to watch you do it.

Hey, Montague, Ontario, new forest owner here. Been watching your channel ever since I started shopping for land about 2 years ago. I'm a suburban bred and loved living in Tokyo in my youth. I have been very active on the internet and I believe that metaverses (or parallel world of interests) has been a thing for much longer than you may think. Your channel is a metaverse (abeit small in scale) to your viewers and we escape vacariously through your actions. The point of growing the experience to the point of it being near reality serves as an actual valuable connection. Imagine being able to have intimate conversations with your viewers yet being thousands of kilometers apart. The metaverses were always meant to make connections easier. I believe the next step is to make those connections more meaningful. It scares me though, where it is easy to connect with anybody, but it is doubly easy to drop those connections. But in reality, your subscribers count is that exact model. In theory, the youtuber becomes happier when subscribers# and comment# goes up and is worried when they go down. The metaverses can only as complicated as it is designed to immerse those connections. Hope to chat more with you soon!

I agree with your assessment of the Metaverse. I'm a fantasy novel writer and because of my association with others like myself (fantasy and Sci-Fi nerds), I know many people who play different types of RPG (role-playing games). My sons and a niece play D&D games, which helps me with my research for my stories. It is a whole thing. I can see where it would separate those who are more plugged in vs. those who are not. And by plugged in I mean virtually plugged in. I do love all of the Off Grid kinds of things and I grew up on a farm, so I love watching your show where you build everything by hand and using the brain God gave you. It's incredible to me. I would be one with a leg in both realms, at least for a while since I have to have my platform (social media) to reach out to those who buy my books. But, it's not something I enjoy. Nature is where my heart is, where my stories come from. It was a bit disconcerting when I saw that about Facebook. And I too wonder how long it will be. If the last year, year and a half can point you to any answers, it happens faster than you might think. I feel you are like Dick Proenneke who went out on his own and created his own world in the wild. It was still pretty unheard of at that time, and though we have many who are Off Grid today, you are one of a few that are a light in that virtual darkness. Thanks for your light.

The other set are active outdoors, playing sports, etc.. Though the latter three are also acquainted with the ‘virtual’ world, they are so much happier and engaged with the world. When raising my sons, camping and gardening and their participation in sports was our world. There was a time when many found the writings of Aldous Huxley & his book The Brave New World surreal if not even offensive. We have long since moved far beyond Huxley but not away from man’s seeming fascination with a life of expediency, quickly accessible conveniences & curiously, impersonalization. In this episode you bring forth many things, once again for thought, in your discussion of a future of virtual reality...but...in keeping with Shawn James, you also point out people can still create choices. My choice, like yours, would not be for a life consumed with virtual reality. I would also suspect the two choices you point out in this episode will be predominantly generational. Enjoyed the thoughts you shared. Once again, Be well & stay safe.

Changes come to us every day, I see them as simply more choices, something as human beings we will always have is choice. We choose how we spend our days, sit around and say "poor me" or find new things to learn, new ways to do something, do something better. I reduced my screen time by 75% and have never been more calm, more productive more engaged with each passing hour. Life is to live actively not swallowed by passively staring at a screen, with in boundaries other have created. I always learn something when I catch up with your videos

Everyday when I am out in the woods in summer or even in the snow, I am so aware of the smell of nature. I can't imagine that being recreated. I love the imperfection of nature and touching what I am looking at. I guess time will tell.

I can't imagine a 'virtual' walk through the woods being anywhere near as enjoyable as an actual one. Just the smells of the fir pine or cedars, or maybe the bear that just a couple minutes ago was where you are now. The cold air against your face and the smell of the smoke from your fire that is boiling your billycan. As a youth I used to snowshoe and have a snareline where now there are houses. I used to go for a good part of the day and have a small fire to make hot chocolate or cook a hotdog for a lunch. Just yesterday I was able to spend most of the morning walking around pretending I was hunting (lol) and simply enjoying those smells and the fresh air. As I said I can't imagine enjoying a 'walk' on my computer screen that much. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. Cheers from NB.

Looking forward to everything you upload in this channel and the other ❤️ The virtual world stuff is intimidating to me, as I am from the older generation 😂 Learning new ways in technology is difficult. Yet, on the other hand, being able to see things in a more real fashion sounds intriguing Corpus Christi TX

I live in a smallish town in a small house with a nice yard that I've turned into a huge garden. I grow lots of vegetables and medicinal herbs. I have a cattle panel greenhouse that allows me greens in the winter. I rent with a awesome landlord who doesn't care what I do. Especially since I've improved the value of her house. I dream of living like Shawn does but at 66 I know it will never happen so I am doing all I can to make this place homey! God Bless you with long life and good health Shawn, and Cali too!

Funny, I’ve been working hard through this pandemic to remove myself from the virtual/online world and get back to nature. Including cutting way back on Facebook as my chosen social media and moving more to Instagram as a more pliable, lifestyle/ hobby based platform (for me anyway). Fb going to VR will be my stepping off point and I will shut mine down. The 2030 agenda sounds like a move towards a more genial society with more evenly distributed wealth. But it’s done with corporate mindset and ideologies. And all you need do is read any old sci-fi books to see how that will end. Now I’ll watch Omega Man or Soylent Green 😬 You’re on the right path Shawn. And I like these videos where you give your views like this. Cheers

I think you are already a part of some people's virtual reality, especially the group of people that you mentioned, that are not or no longer able to expierience nature the way they want to. You give them a window to see what they would not be able to see otherwise and to at least partially satisfiy that need as good as possible. It was like that for me, while I was still living in the city and was working for and waiting to acquire my more rural property to live and work on. Of course I was out in the local forest when I had the time, but your videos played a major part in providing stress relief and general relaxation (as well as education in certain areas). I also think it is important to note, that virtual does not mean "fake". It is a tool, that can be used well or that can be wasted. Just to give one example: As a historian I am glad, that more and more institutions start virtualising their collection, so that in case of unforseeable (or forseeable) destruction or damage the object can still be seen as it was. Whole cities can be recreated in their ruinous or even reconstructed state, which is something that often can not be expierienced anymore because either of ruination or in newer cases of actual destruction. If, of course, the question is just if I'd like to expierience something great in person or virtually, I would always choose the "in person" option, but in some cases and for some people, virtual will be as good as it gets.

Nothing can replace a touch, a hug. They can plan all they want but I would not let virtual decide my day to day life. Imagine the POWER these people can have over one's life. Parent child relationship. You know they will be observing, videoing everything you do. No privacy. They can disconnect you from all support if they want or as an experiment,, if you only have virtual life support. People can accept or reject. We only get this one chance at this life and at knowing ourselves and knowing others. I hope millions of people choose like you, Shawn. I started working from home in October 2019, before the pandemic. I'm a web developer and could do my job from the moon just as long as I had good internet. I think the virtual reality technology you're referring to could allow people to leave the city and live more in nature while still keeping their jobs that currently require them to be in the city. I dream about doing my job from a small cabin in the woods someday.

I am 90 years old and have loved nature since my early childhood. Of course, there was a lot more available nature in my early years, but never will anything virtual replace real trees, sky, grass, creeks, flowers, bugs, birds, butterflies, frogs, fish, lizards, fresh turned earth, squirrels, otters, beavers, new mown hay, and oh, well, you get the picture! If I had know what a mess our world was headed for, I would have done more of what you are doing there in Canada. Carve a few natural havens out of hard to reach wilderness and chopper in older folks who can't do such things anymore for month long retreats away from the madness! Nothing beats a quite walk in the woods, watching nature and breathing fresh air. We have some stranding dead trees we have to take down and yeah, it gets harder. My husband is 75 and I am 70 we do what we can and keep on keeping on. We will never live in a cement jungle. As hard as things sometimes get, it is a joy to wake up each day and watch a new day unfold. We enjoy watching your videos and remembering our trips to Canada. Lovely country.

I think this is getting into the edge of things. And when this happens, the danger of falling into chaos takes place (chaos theory). I cannot and will not be able to easily adjust in a virtual world. I never had. I gave up my zoom. I like to breathe in air from trees, hug the people I love, hug trees, talk to the animals and plants and trees, walk barefoot in the forest, and just feast my eyes with the grandeur of Nature! My problem is physically I want to get outdoors more but my body after working construction has broken down. Mentally I can do it because you get smarter from life experiences . Things like small game hunting has become almost impossible because I can’t walk on uneven grounds. I still love Getting out in nature . The sights and sounds of the quiet are something I still enjoy. Watching you and Cali I live vicariously through you. Thanks Shawn. I worry about that virtual world you described,as unless you have gone outdoors, for me it was hunting you will never know how wonderful it truly is. Just sitting quietly listening to a brook run, the wind rustling through pine trees, and the sounds of game large and small moving about. No computer will simulate that. Also as I sit and watch things like your fire in the back ground and think about the smell and the sound of wood crackling. All these things Will be lost in a virtual world. The details I am discribing can’t all be put into a computer and your sensory grasp it all. Keep it going but be careful. The weight of one log falling wrong could end your season. I’ll be watching and learning still as you progress. I enjoy every episode.I am probably 10-15 years older than you so get it done now . Lol

Every time I see that beautiful stream behind you I envision 100 Embden geese having a blast in it. I saw the Egyptians used ramps to build the pyramids, so maybe if you get your cabin up 4 logs, you could put three brace ramps against them, then pull each log up the ramp braces, and work up that way, with your come alongs, and cables in the trees. I liked the comments saying to use two cables in case one snaps, for a safety net. My plan was identical to yours till my kids insisted I move close to them. My one aunt built her new farm house with wide doors and ramp access in case she needed a wheelchair. I wish you had a Suffolk Punch mare to pull your logs for you. Or find an Amish guy with a team, and have him pull your logs through that rough stretch some day. Maybe if a horse showed up, Cali would bark. My dog used to love my horses, and they’d leap around in circles together, whenever I got to the top of the lane. I have talked four of my kids into going off grid, by and by, and one is starting the process with her husband. I think if young couples could work from home with solar powered computers say, they could escape urban crowding, live saner lives, raise healthier kids, grow healthier food, be overall stronger, and make use of the millions of empty acres in Canada and the USA. Maybe you will have a course someday, Off Grid 101, followed by 102, etc.. I think a lot of young people are ready for it, instead of plastic, if the government will comply. Then too, they’d be set up for cheap retirement, and be able to even have a caregiver come for an hour a day maybe. If I were a politician, I’d limit property taxes to 100 bucks per year on ones principle home. That would cover street repair, etc.. I talked to an elderly lady once who was going to kill herself because she was being taxed out of the home her husband had built for her, and being moved to a highrise. Confiscatory taxation of ones home, is a crime. Great update.

I believe that what “we” (me, you, most watching this) will see might be discouraging or perhaps a bit scary but I think it will be successful, for many. As you said, it’s not for me but it will suit many, but those that it does suit will not likely find “My Self Reliance” in their media feed.

There have always been the city dwellers and the country dwellers. I have lived in both places. I prefer the country and wide open spaces. As I get older I recognize my physical limitations. But I can still enjoy life but not the discomforts. As people we were in the past isolated by geography and the ability to move about. Wagon trains, boats, trains, cars and then air travel made it easier to access the world. Virtual reality is just another access point. You can either jump on or not. A simpler life seems to feel better to me at my age of 68. I notice I don’t crave distant travel. I am content in my community. Community will not go. I love your channel because I get to experience and learn from you. It is a reality that is virtual to me. So weather you realize it or not, you are already part of virtual reality. I think your perspective is important Shawn. It's also important to consider that humans are incredibly adaptable and we learn value systems, they aren't naturally in place when we are born. People who live in an urban environment and always have, may not be seeking the natural connection that you inherently are with a lifetime of both access and abundant knowledge shared. The longing and passion you feel for and about the wilderness is not built into people who have never accessed it and never considered it important. So the world of virtual reality is already happening for some of us who have never had access to it, but get to watch you weekly living and working in the environment. It is so important the access you give us so that we can have the opportunity to think about an alternative option to the lifestyle that is laid out in front of us in areas with low access to green space. it is an example of how it can be done and a decidedly different value system. Thank you for all you do and your honest and inspiring commentary. It is so important.

Just catching up on some of your videos after spending two months traveling cross country, living out of the back of my truck, and visiting and photographing 10 of our national parks here. Just two weeks prior to that I spent a month in Alaska visiting 4 of the parks there. I feel my happiest and healthiest while out and about so living in a virtual world would not be my ideal (and I am not young - mid 60's). I believe being in the moment in the real world, seeing and feeling everything around me is important to my well being. New word recently - rumination - and I found a study done in the UK connecting rumination to anxiety. They saw how being in nature has a healing impact for the mental health of those who dwell, worry or ruminate on things current or past in their lives. Staying active, moving and taking care of our bodies should be our number one goal in our lives which then leads to a healthy longevity (barring any catastrophic illness). I've seen people in my life just sit in front of the TV or computer (both young and old) and the health consequences of that lack of movement. Just small movement can lead to more movement to a healthier body. All that being said, during lock down watching your videos in nature helped me not to "ruminate." Moderation and balance in life between the two as in with probably all things we do may be the key moving into the next phase.

I play a lot of games (username checks out!), and live almost exclusively online. But here I am, being inspired and living vicariously. I think you'll find that the more we alienate ourselves from a natural surrounding and physical work, the harder the swing will be to return to those things. A virtual lifestyle may exist for awhile, but the longer it does, the faster the effort to abandon technology and return to the woods will be. Just my two cents, thank you for sharing your experiences!

It's not enticing to anyone but the people at the top that want to control everything and everyone .look at china, north Korea,Cuba, Iran,Venezuela and many many more countries like those where people don't have freedom and democracy to come and go as they please. The people at the top are the ones that want that type of world because they strive for control over there population which is why they hate the second amendment and the first amendment . They will eventually do away with the constitution and will have there own rules and laws and our freedom will no longer be.we can already see this happening with mandates telling us what we must do or lose our jobs .brainwashing our kids of all ages into thinking and believing in what they want the world to be like and there new ways to control everything. As we can already see here in America it's not government of the people for the people.its congress doing whatever they want to do and we have no choice in any of it anymore. The spending in the trillions of dollars on things they want and need to be build monstrous government to make people totally dependent on that government until there's no where to turn.

The meta verse that Google is creating is an interesting concept however, I heard the more virtual we become, the less privacy we have. Some see this as a covert way to hand over a lot of your private data about yourself to join this world. Think about it, shopping for clothes with require your waist size, shoe size, etc. Food shopping will hand over your food choices, revealing what you are or are not allergic too, which brings us to medical. The internet will know a lot about your medical history when you share this with your virtual provider. I don’t know. We may no longer have the privacy we own and enjoy today. You got the right idea building your private life out there. Who know how long that will last in a virtual world.

I don`t do facebook or twitter or any of that, I love these videos . I stream from utube, I follow 3 people now living off grid. It amazes me the talent that these people possess, such as yourself. These are people who are not afraid of hard work, because it is so rewarding. I watch both of your chanels now it is very interesting to see how a cabin comes together, i`m hooked, I love this build.

VR = sad state of life when you are too afraid of life or when you aren’t satisfied with life. You pretend to be someone you aren’t. Time to learn how to be proud of who you are and go find real friends. SM is for learning not to run from life

My thinking is that 99% of the issues in our society today is due to the dependence on social media as a major point of communication. I agree with you Shawn that I will not be participating in the new “meta-verse”. In my view it is more difficult to adopt a “mean girls” attitude when you are dealing with your fellow human beings face to face in real life. That’s what we need to get back to…knowing our neighbors and community IN PERSON. I love nature. Unfortunately for me, I can no longer get out into the forests and lakes that I love. But I can still experience them through people like you who make the time and effort to produce and post your experiences. Your videos are some of the most beautiful I have seen. So let me take this opportunity to thank you once again for your hard work in sharing your journey for those of us who cannot get out there and live it ourselves.
