always look at it in a directional aspect. your last 2 cuts are promoting right side growth if you cut back one more node on the last cut it will grow to the left

Should the entire stem be woody before trying to notch?

This specimen serves as a compelling illustration of why you should refrain from pinching or pruning the apical bud of your F. Elastica if it is not receiving adequate light. The wide inter-nodal spacing and sparse leaves in this particular plant indicate lower light conditions.

I found a super cheap variegated money tree on clearance at home depot - it's reverted on the new growth so I want to try notching it along the variegated portion of the trunk. Would this method work the same for a money tree? Not sure if they grow any differently to the ficus

Hey Samuel, sounds like a lucky found!! Honestly not sure but I guess you can probably cut it back and it will grow again but best to check on Google or KZbin!

Hey, I’ve cut the growth point on my ficus and it’s been almost two months and I haven’t seen any growth. It seems like the plant doesn’t show that it’ll grow anything from the growth point anymore. Do you know what I did wrong and what do you suggest I do to fix it ? Please help

Just be patient it will grow eventually, believe me. I think it took me about 5 mos I think before there was new branch coming out.

Can you notch without removing the top growth point? Or is it not necessarily possible to have growth coming from the top AND making lower branches?

Yes you can but be careful not to cut too deep otherwise it might snap off the whole thing :)

Too small. If it doesn't have a woody stem yet then hold off on trying to notch it, you'll kill it.

I notched my ficus lyrata about 1/3 deep and zero sap came out. I cut just a bit deeper and still none. What’s up with that? 😅

I have tried cutting my rubber plant multiple times and each time it only grows one new branch in the same spot… which makes the whole process useless. 😫

Yeah that can happen. As you saw in the video my plant just grew a weird side branch but at the top part of the plant so that was also kinda useless. If you scrape off the wood and make multiple incision your changes of getting real side branches are higher.
