Nah the real box MVP is the Ambulance Box. Aside from reviving downed teammates (and having flashing lights while doing so), it's a great way to heal without using healing items which impacts rankings and most boss areas have cheese spots you can hide in to wait out the healing. This is especially useful in vehicle missions where the vehicles can be obnoxiously powerful in the late game.

Fun fact: the song in the ZEKE battle was made in-universe for Peace Day, the day where peace would have been mostly achieved throughout the world. This also means that Miller (and by extension, MSF) could have been the very first idol manager if Paz didn't pull all the shit that happened on Mother Base. Also means that Paz knows how to sing in Japanese, and also that Miller is an absolute god of a producer and lyric maker because *gawd damn,* Love Deterrence goes so hard for something about nuclear deterrence theory disguised as a love song about a forbidden student and teacher romance. (Also, Paz is an adult, and her being 16 was a lie. Because Kojima is Kojima and he won't hesitate to make Big Boss become a lolicon without him knowing about wtf that means in a game as long as it's revealed that the 16 year-old schoolgirl was actually a consenting adult and that they just look like a teen.)

In terms of why Peace Walker's cutscenes look so much better than Portable Ops', there are three reasons, I feel: 1. Art was done by both Ashley Wood and Yoji Shinkawa, and for fun the two of them tried imitating each other's styles here and there, making for more varied artwork. 2. They're FAR more animated than they were in Portable Ops. 3. They further imitate the comic/graphic novel look using small "frames" (or boxes) and speech bubbles rather than just standard subtitles.

Peace Walker is actually my favorite MGS game. THIS is the game that reveals WHAT caused Big Boss to become a bitter hate-filled man set on fanning the flames of war throughout the world. He wasn't driven by a different interpretation of The Boss' will/dream. Peace Walker reveals that Big Boss was not driven to fulfill The Boss' dream, AT ALL! In fact he was driven by the opposite. Peace Walker's revelation of The Boss' actual goals/dream of world peace, along with the implication that that literally everything she taught him to believe… the very thing she taught him to believe… the very thing she gave her life for… the very core of his being... being true to your mission.... was bullshit she herself completely opposed to festered in & BROKE Big Boss. It poisoned all his memories of her, and turned his love and admiration for her into hatred and resentment. THIS game reveals that he felt completely betrayed by, and hated The Boss... who was also paradoxically the person he also loved & admired most. Consequently he was dead set on avenging himself upon her memory. He didn't want to make her dream a reality. He wanted to turn it into a nightmare, it and shove it down her throat, using everything she taught him & taught him to believe... betraying her memory & dream/will the same way she betrayed him, as revenge for her betrayal.

@skeith8045 ай бұрын
So, Chapter 5 is one of my favs but not for the usual missions + story structure. Instead it's just all about MSF starting to snowball into a sizeable fighting force. The tone at Mother Base is a lot more sinister sounding, the base starts getting built at a speedy pace, you start sending your own Metal Gear out on the front lines guaranteeing dominance on the battlefield. It all feels like this war machine you built has taken on a life of its own. You became a threat and Cipher tried to make a move on you because of it. It WOULD be nice if it was accomplished without passing time and catching Zadornov 10 times but.. Also I believe Paz is stripped down because the inside of Zeke is using a water system to help absorb the forces experienced on the pilot. If she wasn't in a hurry, she'd probably throw on a wet suit.

Peace Walker was my go to MGS game after my PS2 finally died and couldn't play MGS2 and MGS3 anymore. There are a lot of things that pissed me off like finding Zadornov and (could be just the emulator being buggy) the mechanized unit boss fights and side ops would take very long just because the commander would not pop out of the hatch or the soldiers falling down the ground to the void, essentially soft locking me on a non-lethal playthrough. Even though PW is at least in the middle for me, I really enjoyed progressing through the game and unlocking cool items like the electromagnetic net, box tank, and the sleeping gas launcher. Great video Chole, I have managed to watched the entire thing. Hope to see your video on Revengeance soon. :) Also a tip: if you throw guards on the floor while they're still conscious, you can hold them up by aiming behind them, they will stay there on the floor permanently until a enemy guard sees them. It has been a thing since MGS3(idk if MGS2 does this), and it will be useful once you get to GZ and TPP.

Some elements such as CQC combos, some fights and equipment were made to be more silly/anime-like to have a younger appeal. In some regions it also led to censorship due to this like Strangelove's torture section was changed to electric tickle torture with Snake's screams replaced with comical high pitched giggles. MGS PW is probably one of the most mature, the fact that you literally have the option shoot and not kill the opponent but put them in a near death state, where you can Fulton or Stun gun or even a stub grenade if they are far from you to keep them alive. That's mature thinking. It's pretty immature to just go around unaliving people like in the other games. Not only that but the story is probably very boring if you have an immature mind like younger audiences. If you ask me MGS 3 was the one that toned down the seriousness.

@ToshisGarden3 ай бұрын
Glad to hear you enjoyed this one, as it's also one of my favorite Metal Gear games! I will say just a couple of things, though: Your overall ability to enjoy this game to the max, while it does of course encompass things you touched on throughout this video, I would argue hinges just as much on one particular thing that you can both argue is the game's greatest strength and/or its greatest weakness, if not actually hinging moreso on said strength/weakness. That point of contention is that Peace Walker, from the words of Kojima himself, was designed to be a giant love letter to the Monster Hunter franchise. Almost every basic element of Peace Walker's moment-to-moment gameplay when you're actually control was designed to blend gameplay elements of the Metal Gear franchise with those of the MonHun franchise as seamlessly as possible into something that cpuld potentially work well. That goes for everything from basic movement to boss fight arenas (think Elder Dragon arenas from Monster Hunter) to item procurement (how you were describing procuring boss and AI parts is quite similar to Monster Hunter). The biggest indicator of this is that, while both games can still be fun solo, they were both designed with multiplayer in mind for the true experience. There is even a control option (at least in the HD Version; I don't remember about on the original) that specifically states that it was "designed to mimic the controls as seen in the Monster Hunter Freedom series" called "Hunter Type". There are also actual Monster Hunter missions you can unlock to face off against monsters from Monster Hunter and a unique, extremely cool surprise original hidden boss for fans of both Metal Gear and Monster Hunter that was designed by Capcom's actual Monster Hunter team. It was the Metal Gear half of a Metal Gear X Monster Hunter crossover, and you can complete these missions for exclusive equipment parts, and many functions of those battles work as they would in Monster Hunter such as cooking rations and I believe flashing flying monsters. That adds into another large point of the most enjoyment you will get out of this game: easter eggs. If you like easter eggs, there are many that this game makes in reference to Metal Gear, other videogames such as Assassin's Creed, and even the ability to recruit Kojima himself. One of my favorite types of minigames to play in this entry is actually a deep-cut reference an old Konami game called "Pooyan"! Other than that, the last major thing I can think of is if you like looking into supplementary material. It's not for everyone, but this game has many of my favorite codec-style conversations in the form of the Briefing Files, as I find many of them charming and actually quite helpful when it comes to adding to character depth and development. MGS3 taught us that Big Boss is afraid of vampires, and this game teaches us that he believes in Santa Clause. Solid. Gold. Also, I thought it was quite funny that you mentioned trying this on PS3 since the game is actually most readily playable on every Xbox system except the original, as the HD Collection has been made backwards compatible for every generation since!

1) Kojima didn't drop the 5 on Peace Walker. Konami did. 2) It's best to play it on PS3, or at least on a Vita, or Vita TV. 3) The MSF beach HQ was on the coast near the San Hieronymo peninsula. Kaz wanted to move on from it (expand the business) and get away from Columbia. Internationally, the line was grossly misconstrued as a dig against Portable Ops (because it doesn't match up properly to the original Japanese line) when in reality it's meant to be a positive nod to Portable Ops. 4) The PSP wasn't a portable PS2. It's less powerful than PS2 but more powerful than PS1. 5) Ground Zeroes doesn't match up to the final ending of Peace Walker, when in GZ Kaz mentioned to Big Boss about how they BOTH fell for Paz's student of peace story. Why? Because GZ and TPP are the hypnagogia "V has come to" project that Kojima is putting the player though. Therefore V is non-canon. There is also dialogue from EVA and Big Boss in MGS4 that proves V isn't canon.

As someone who played PW on PSP, I found this game to be the worst executed and least enjoyable to play out of every other Metal Gear game I have played so far, simply because of the controls and 3D environment. I am really suprised and also jealous that other fans enjoy this game so much. I really wanted to finish this game as I am playing through the series in their order in the timeline, but the clunkiness of the camera and movememt system just kept me asking when the game is going to be over. I wish they would have taken the top down locked camera approach to the level design like they did with mgs 1, 2, 3 because the PSP just doesn't have enough buttons to handle the new dimension. I guess I should have tried to play this on PS3 for a better control option, but I also found the later boss fights to be a hassle aswell. Even though I was always hitting the metal gears' weak points, I was constantly running out of ammo and having to request ammo shipments to finish the fight, which really took away from the experience. I do think the game had a lot of depth in terms of story telling with its cassette tapes and character connection, but the PSP control system is downright excruciating even after trying each layout. I do appreciate videos like these that break down the smaller components of the game so I don't have to touch it again 😁

the story and gameplay does indeed drag on, but i believe it is also for the reason that co-op exists in the game too... you can literally co-op pretty much the entire game with maybe a few exceptions.... but its mostly 2 players throughout the game with boss battles having 4 players... and imo the co-op really helps make the game... I mean the game itself is amazing in its own right and i completed it mostly solo and had a great time, i love it... but i can also safely say i had a blast playing the game in co-op and it really help deal with all the padding... especially with all the cool and silly stuff you can unlock in R&D... 2 of my favorites being the cardboard ambulance and the cardboard tank lol

When this game came out originally on the psp, I HAAAAAATED it due to the bad controls. When the HD version came out on the PS3/Xbox 360, that's when I gave it a proper go at it. personally I love the story. But It's one those games, once you 100% it or heck even just finishing the main story once. You never want to go back for various reasons like chapter 5 and grinding for parts. To be honest, the only reason I finished this game and got the platinum trophy was because I was playing it online with random people with OP weapons to defeat Zeke. I still can't believe you done all of that by yourself. Very well done. If this game does come to master collection volume 2. I highly doubt it I'll replay it 😅

Portable Ops feels more replayable and fun. Levels are bigger, with alot more paths and doors, using the "lego" level design at it's peak. PW does looks way nicer visually, definitely, but you have very simple rooms, that are either blocks with obstacles or corridors disguised as forest paths.

I think they got rid of crawling because they removed vents, traps and other areas to crawl under. I do kind of miss those things because the levels could have used a little more variety. I agree on your points about your army, ammo and AI. Part of me wishes it was a little more "traditional" with the weapons, ammo and levels. I still think it's a great game. It's even better when you fix the controls and framerate in the emulator or play the HD version.

How are you going to handle Ground Zeros? The game by many accounts only has a few hours worth of game play and is basically just the prologue for MGSV just in a separate package for some reason. Super excited for you to get to MGSV! The gameplay is phenomenal, and in my opinion is takes everything you loved about peace walker and does it even better. I'm sure you've probably been warned by now, but the story is such a tragedy after the second half with the last mission of the story "Kingdom of the flies" being completely cut from the game and only available to be viewed as a WIP development cinematic on KZbin. You can really tell when problems between the dev team and Konami reached their boiling point. So while it is an absolutely fantastic game, it could have been so so SO much more.

They're going to be two separate videos for a couple of reasons, but mainly just because it was released as its own product, so I want to judge it by that standard. It's also going to allow me to split up the MGSV work load a bit and hopefully not end up with a 2-3 hour video 😂

I think PW is quite a great game that adds a lot of lore and context to the overall MG story. Strangelove is possibly one of my favorite characters in the series and it's a shame that this is her "only" appearance. My feelings about the last chapter are the same as yours. I gave up after the second Zadornov search and just googled the sucker's remaining locations. Looking forward to the next review which I believe is Revengeance; the game with the most annoying final boss in the series and also the game that made popular the phrase "Make America Great Again" before anyone else .
@nong3335 ай бұрын
Still one of my favorites in the series despite its flaws. My biggest complained is this is the point where the series started really moving away from the whole quirky miniboss squad trope that the franchise itself helped solidify. While the boss fights in this game were definitely fun and challenging in their own way but I really started to miss groups like Foxhound, Dead Cell, The Cobra Unit, and the BnB Corps. Also, not sure if you found this out through your own gameplay since you didn't mention it around 29:40, but did you know that if you go through all the trucks at the mountain top garage cutscene, one of them contains Hideo Kojima himself and you can recruit him into MSF? You mention late in the video that Peace Walker has more contradiction and retcons to pick apart than usual but, oh man, depending on how canon you consider the creator of the game being an actual character within the game...who Snake instantly recognizes (Snake: "...Mister Kojima?!")...I'll let you make of that what you will.

I felt kinda sad by the end of PW. I don’t love it, but I still like it. Unfortunately, I really do love all the other MGS games I’ve played, so that puts this one at the absolute bottom for me by default. It’s not a bad game, but it doesn’t meet the standard of quality I’d expect it to. I had heard a lot of positive things going into it, but I walked away feeling like it was more of a spin-off than anything else.

@@subtegralthat’s a nice argument senator, why don’t you back it up with a source? In all seriousness, GZ and V is canon. Maybe they retconned some things, whatever. Those games are canon
@subtegral4 ай бұрын
@@captainpep3I gave part of the proof in the post you are replying to. The best proof is Big Boss' own dialogue in MGS4 "they've never managed to control people at will, let alone turn one person totally into another". More clarification of what V means is found in Kojima's old tweet: "Not MGS5 - MGSV. My thought in it. V has come to". Both GZ + TPP = V, and both are pieces that don't fit into the greater puzzle (the overall Metal Gear universe) Even MSF (Peace Walker) is lightly referenced in MGS4 by EVA, while V is never referenced in anything except Metal Gear Survive. From EVA in MGS4: "Determined to oppose Zero in his plans, Big Boss broke away from the Patriots (1972) He left the United States and created his own mercenary company (MSF 1974) and drifted around the world. They both misinterpreted The Boss’ will, and their absolute reverence for her drove them apart. So began the war between Zero and Big Boss. There was nothing left of The Boss' noble will in their struggle, all that remained was hatred - a passion to destroy one another". The above dialogue alone should prove that Big Boss would never agree to a body double plan created by Zero. EVA also mentioned that it was Zero himself who had Big Boss and Gray Fox salvaged from Zanzibar in 1999, but according to V .. Zero was already a brain dead vegetable by the late 1970's, long before 1999. Then why is Zero a vegetable in MGS4? the truth is simple: failed health because Zero is literally 105 years old in 2014. And don't try to say that MGSV has the power to retcon both MGS4 and Peace Walker. If so, then we might as well consider MGS4 and the final ending of Peace Walker as non-canon and be done with it.

I was going to say it was just as well that PW doesn't have the crawl mechanics from MGS4, but having gone back to your video on 4 I'm reminded that no, it does have actual crawl in addition to what I thought you meant, which was this weird ground-humping thing Old Snake could do to move while lying flat. Meanwhile, I can't believe you never pointed out the ridiculousness of the full name _"Hot Coldman,"_ like come on, Kojima, really?! Or, for that matter, you sum up what the characters say well enough, but some analysis of how much of it (and, I suppose, the characters' motivations in saying it) is utter "that's not how any of this works" bullshit would've been nice. (See also, for example, everything in MGS1 involving "soldier genes", dominant vs. recessive genes, how neither Liquid nor Solid can be "copies" of Big Boss if their DNA was altered, etc.) Still, yeah, PW pretty decent in a lot of ways and way more important to the overall timeline than you'd think from being an unnumbered portable platform release, but definitely flawed with how you get to the final end game. At least you'll be somewhat used to it for MGSV.
