Not sure if you've experienced it because it wasn't covered in the video, but the game actually tries to tie itself into MGSV in one more way, through a short alternate ending, which I'll put under a read more/spoiler warning for those who care, lol. | | | v Just after you send Chris through the wormhole and you start going back to the final big wave defence, you can actually turn around and choose to go through the wormhole too. Your character goes back to their timeline, and is shown waking up in Afghanistan wearing full MSF combat gear, just like the various wandering MSF soldiers that you can recruit in MGSV. It then lets you reload straight back to before the choice, so you can continue the game as normal. Unfortunately if you miss it, you have to replay the entire game again up until that point to trigger it from what I can remember.

The fact of the matter is, people missed out on a really fun multiplayer experience. I've been saying it since the day it came out. I can only imagine what they would have added to this game if there was an online player base. Every once in awhile, I will still log on. Finally, it's also pretty clear that at least some of the mechanics of this game were on The Cutting Room floor from Metal Gear Solid 5. Damn good review here. It took me a while to realize that I wasn't a Metal Gear fan, but a Kojima fan. The care and effort on intricate details that he puts into his games are unprecedented. You can tell the immediate differences when playing a Metal Gear game that he did not specifically direct. They're not bad per se, but they cease to provide that masterful experience. Take the PSP for example. You had Portable Ops/Plus, then Acid, then Peace Walker. I can assume everyone will be able to guess which one was directed by Hideo Kojima... even if they were unaware prior that he was only involved in one of the aforementioned titles. Kojima's new niche nowadays is providing a looping cinematic experience prior/after mission objectives that capture minute eventful situations (Venom Snake sitting in the helicopter and looking at Quiet for a certain amount of time, Sam Bridges and the many interactions that can be experienced just by going back into his quarters and messing around in there, etc). No "pause" moment in the story is left unchecked w/o something that can be discovered. This same attention to detail is just not applicable with Konami at the wheel. They simply tried to Joss Whedon a franchise that was built and created by James Cameron. Not bad... but not authentic in the least.

Thinking about it, a combination of both MGS V and Survive would have been pretty cool So imagine instead of only having Zombies to fight you could have the big outposts(?) (idk what they are called in english but sumn like Gwandai Village or Mfinda Oilfield) where normal people live, there you could embrace the stealthy stuff more with enemies that are scary because they are intelligent, you could loot them maybe recruit them for your own base maybe even be friendly and trade if we're keeping GMP too And then the Zombie stuff could be where you use all the fun gear like the rocket launchers and Walker Gears etc. And there you have enemies that are scary because of sheer number and toughness instead of intellect (but like shit, have people you previously looted help the Zombies out as Snipers or sumn because they wanna take their stuff back) And also a survival Game is pretty much just one big OSP Mission and there were wayyy too few of those in V (Expanding even further give us a huge map like Breath of the Wild/RDR 2 that isn't as empty as Afghanistan/the Kongo, some of the Systems in the aforementioned games like the weather/seasons, having to adapt your clothing to the temperatures, cooking) Expanding EVEN further maybe even PVP other ppl could rob your Mother Base (or FOB even) and then you get a distress Signal and have to haul ass from anywhere to MB, or MB to FOB to fight them off If you're attacking someone else & have low lvl gear stealth is more appropriate vs attacking others with high level gear could favour the guns blazing approach Carrying the FOB Missions over into this game as well in some form Additionally maybe even "P+P" where you can help other Players out instead of being mean I put 1200 hours combined into MGSV Botw & RDR2 I feel like the *perfect* Survival Zombie game has to be a mix of the best parts of these 3 (so a Protag who can explore, hunt/gather/scavenge as freely as Link/Arthur and stealth /fight as hard as Big Boss) Anyway nice video dude fr you got me inspired out here 😭

I didn't even hate the concept like other MGS fans did back in the day, but I just couldn't get past how fast literally everything drained and the computer constantly yelling at you to drink, eat, fuel things etc. It really took me out of it even being a survival game and it just felt like nonstop busy work with a super annoying side kick.

Good vid. The biggest downside to this game is the very slow progression in the first half of the game. I could see how people bowed out early. Go and watch reviews from when the game released. Almost none of the reviews' gameplay show beyond the first couple of 'tutorial' missions. Movement is slow, dealing with Wanderers is too tedious, the hunger system is a little too brutal for most people who aren't used to survival mechanic games. But the mid to late part of the single-player is pretty fun once you build up your stamina, unlock gardening and animal farms and gain access to more weapons. There's strategy to exploration and multiple choices to make in terms of progression: you can go search already-explored areas for more respawned supplies, explore the unknown to find hidden goodies, press to the next story-progression event, do some online matches to unlock far superior loot and resources, go farm Wanderers for Kuban to level up or do a base dig for special unlocks. The only drawback is the monetization is a bit overbearing. Game tries hard to get you to spend money to speed up some of the in-game timers and unlocking additional exploration units. To me, this hurt the game more than anything else. The multiplayer was extremely fun when you could get a full squad. Frankly, it was the best mp of any Metal Gear game. Again, lot of strategy, get a ton of loot and there's a lot of fan service to it. Nothing like doing the hard or extreme missions and calling in Metal Gear Ray to wipe a zombie hoard. Survive features the most diverse set of Metal Gears in any MG game: Rex, Ray, Shagohod and Sally. Unlocked all the special uniforms like Naked Snake, Eva, The Boss and Ocelot skins and gestures. Wish we had unlockabes like that for MGSV:PP. Speaking of, this game and PP are prime examples of the correlation between expectations and enjoyment. I had more fun playing Survive than I did playing PP because I had way more expectations for PP than Survive. PP was so boring and disappointing to me and Survive was semi-mindless fun. And I say that as an old dude who's played MG games since the 80s. I wish there was a cult following for it. I miss the multiplayer.

The only good thing I can say about it is that it actually incorporated a *solid* melee system that was severely lacking in the series. We've had stun batons, machete, and swords before, but having multiple melee weapon types was kinda neat for how short lived they end up being once you start to get firearm crafting. The fact that they added a combo system to melee means they could have done it for 5... or at least retroactively added into 5 with free DLC or something. Also, having Masahiro Ito come back from Silent Hill to design some weird otherwordly post-game bosses was a nice little addition. They could have just made a game completely around killing aliens if they wanted to.

Honestly, as someone who never really played Metal Gear games, but loved zombie games, Survive was a ton of fun! I think if it had come out before Kojima split, or long enough after that people didn't assume it was an attempt to tarnish his rep, or even if it just didn't have the Metal Gear title attached to it at all, it would've done MUCH better. I can't think of many zombie games that allow you to quickly and seamlessly plop down a variety of defenses on the go; most are either limited to certain locations or require you to open a cumbersome menu first that doesn't work well mid-combat. And the almost TD-focused gameplay was another thing that made it stand out among zombie games. Base defense was a dime a dozen, but as you pointed out, it slowly evolved beyond simple base defense in a reasonably organic way.

I found your channel because I’m also playing every MGS game leading up to Delta. Previously I had played and finished MGS2 on the PS2, and absolutely loved it, but that was about it. I took a break from gaming for much of the 2010’s, coming back during covid and playing catch up. When I played Death Stranding I had only heard of Kojima in passing and knew little about him. So I came in not a fanboy, and without the baggage that came with the Konami fallout. Honestly it was not the disaster people made it out to be. If you love Phantom Pain and it’s mechanics, you’ll probably have fun with this game. It has some good ideas and recycles the rest. And from what I understand Konami only sold it for 30 bucks which is some real restraint for Konami. I also think this was all they could do with the IP. A standalone experience as a new narrative driven game would have been the real slap in the face to Kojima’s legacy. It doesn’t feel malicious or a cash grab. When a creator signs away their IP rights this is what they sign up for. It being so soon is what likely made it feel so much worse. That being said, it’s not the greatest game I’ve ever played and it’s the worst Metal Gear game. But I didn’t hate my time with it. I was honestly happy to jump in with MGSV’s core mechanics in a new game again. I don’t think it would be remembered today, but I think a lot of people would have enjoyed this at launch that never gave it a shot. And given it’s the last piece of new Metal Gear content we’ll ever see, we’re far enough removed now that it’s well worth a dive if you can find it on sale or are looking for something to play. I get the sentiment over how that whole thing went down, but the game itself is way overhated. And the creature designer of Silent Hill (the guy who made the iconic Pyrimid Head) designed the monsters here, which is pretty cool.

I remember playing through Survive in 2018, and just really enjoying it. Something about, being able to loot, and mish-mash Soviet and African equipment and develop a sort of headcannon for the person you was playing struct me creatively at the time, and I ended up just playing through it whilst listening to Bill Burr podcasts. I can't remember a single second of it. But, Naked_Jimbo lives on in my screenshots.

Ah, so Death Stranding Design is what we would have really had in MG Survive. Much better lore than what we ended up with. Also, the inventory system from Death Stranding would have been a part of this and would have been way better. This just furthers my disappointment with this game. Imagine how much more fun it would be with the mechanics and animations of carrying cargo the way we do in Death Stranding, would have been so much fun... I actually really like survival games so I probably would've enjoyed trying it if the situation between Kojima and Konami didn't sour my perception of it on launch.
@Anon-gq4xw5 ай бұрын
Since you're speaking from a new player's perspective I suppose it's fair to mention that the story mode was an afterthought to Survive. The main point of the game was the co-op mode. Which you didn't get to experience which is a very big shame because it is the best part. It is also remarkably varied because of what you said with subclasses too. There was also cool tech like the leg sweep being able to kick mortar's grenades back or away from the digger. And also since you didn't experience it, Co-op could get really cool because you could summon iirc, MG Ray, Rex, Geckos, and one more as a support ability. And fighting along Metal Gears if even for one massive attack or not, I have yet to experience again in another game of this or a similar genre.

Finally someone gave this game a fair trial. Aside from the MGS stuff, it's a pretty good and addicting exploration/base building game with an endgame that is actually mercenaries (resident evil 4) mixed with tower defense, and looter shooter item drops. And to be honest I never found it boring, I found it very immersive. Kinda reminded me of the feeling of playing Stalker sandbox mods when you're out exploring and surviving. PS: The coop content is doable solo, although pretty hard. Believe it or not there's a content creator that makes Survive videos.

0:16 last time I checked we knew the full story - Microtransactionfilled shovelware for phones makes a ton of money - They force microtransaction nonesense onto MGSV (the FOB Coin nonesense) - Kojima gets yelled at because his huge, expensive games make less money than phone shovelware - Kojima gets yelled at not not putting even more greedy scams into MGSV TPP while he is already unhappy with the stuff they forced in - They ban Kojima from going to the awards show where his game won something, they try to control the narrative and steal credit for his work, host goes rough and tells this on live TV - Kojima gets told "we own you" and now he walks - They butcher what they can from TPP and add nonesense crafting mechanics, nonesense survival mechanices and nonesense zombies on it, calling it a "new game" (At least they didn't add lava levels?) Not gonna lie, MG Survive is what an AI would come up with on "TPP but with all bad clichés"
@hvn_gng5 ай бұрын
Everything you said until the last point, while true, is not really a solid critique when judging an entire game, very biased. >They butcher what they can from TPP and add nonesense crafting mechanics, nonesense survival mechanices and nonesense zombies on it, calling it a "new game" (At least they didn't add lava levels?) This is just false, first off Snake Eater had Hunger Stamina and Healing etc (literally why when you are injured it's referred to as CURE), and they reintroduce and actually add extra movement tech and features, the game is seamless and regardless of how you feel of Konami's handling of the Metal Gear IP, this game is a solid Survival Game. VALID CRITIQUES would have been Always Online hinders the first quarter of the game because sometimes the servers can kick you off, and autosaves are only when you return to Home Base after exploring. The vehicles kinda suck balls. The plot slightly taking liberties in the storyline (set between Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain) such as wormhole tech and other things, but I'm almost positive they explained these things I just was not tuned in. Overall this game being linked to Metal Gear when it didn't have to be is another critique.
