Bit of a vlog from my little messy workshop. Lots going on and not enough time as usual! From finally getting a new compressor through to a new bench grinder and shiny CBN grinding wheel, something that's been on my to-do list for a long time. Thanks to Stumpy Nubs for reminding me!

I note from a previous video that you have a loft space in your garage. Stick the dust collector up there, with a cyclone feeding a bin suspended from the ceiling in a corner. Saves a HEPA filter, and takes no space. I have done this- brilliant. You could put your compressor up there too. Also useful for rarely used wood stocks. Speakers through the ceiling too. Anything you do not need to touch should not be taking up space.

Of you have the space outside, check out the shedlogic/clarke portable garages. They are pretty heavy duty so would be great for storage. Also the cheap pop up gazebos make good portable spray booths. lay a clean tarp down, open up the gazebo, leave the compressor outside and pipe in the gun...bingo ...spray booth . No dust, overspray contained, then put it away :)

Good update mate ....... cbn stands for ..... lol. I've just installed some blast gates. Made my own as I have an odd size main header pipework running around the garage. They took me 10 minutes each to make and work really well. I put my dust collector in a housing (vented) makes a hell of a difference with noise level. And I have a separate home made cyclone sat near too the housing under a bench for easy access

Hey I have the same space problem for leaving cabinets to dry (single car garage). I solved it with a 2x2m party tent (folds into a ~0.24x0.24x2m package for storage) I bought second hand. I set it up on my driveway when needed. Added a couple of strips of wood for rigidity and some cast iron to weight it down. Works like a charm.

I have the same dust collector as you and converted it to a 2 stage collector. Works a charm for my 12 inch jointer, 13 inch planer and 12 inch table saw. Give me a shout if you want to know how I did it and now have 300 litre capacity for chips and have to change my filters about every 5 emptying cycles. Whole thing is upright too so minimal space requirements. Forgot to mention it's also made from none off the shelf parts so minimal cost and includes permanent and flexible extraction options.
@chiselit1
@chiselit1 5 жыл бұрын
I don't know what space you have outside the shop but its a good idea to have both your compressor and extraction outside. In regard to dust extraction, I use mostly PVC storm water pipe 90mm Diameter. and have it run into a home made cyclone before it gets into the vacuum. I made it from a cardboard cylinder ( 550mm dia. cost about A$30.00 all up). I can't believe how efficient it is, but I would also recommend an upgrade on your extractor too, Axminster fm 300bc minimum. Vacuum pressure is not enough, you also need air volume for it to work properly. I would recommend a cyclone non the less, make one don't buy one.

I completely understand how you mean. I attempted to work out a shed but by time I had table saw and outfeed table I couldn't swing a cat. Iv now just moved house so will be making a large mancave with half a workshop but I won't be able to get much done over nxt couple months due to weather, most annoying part is that people are coming and prepared to wait for me for work. If I had a workshop id be killing it.

Watched rag & bone brown video it was excellent but I am still not sure to go with 4 inch or smaller pipe. I’m guessing the larger pipe has a greater volume so needs more suction the smaller diameter will have more power but may be more likely to clog. If Axminster do the 2 1/2 inch pipe it must work and it may be the way to go with my size of workshop I am still baffled but that’s normal for me.

Enjoyed your update. Any chance you could discuss why you went for 2 1/2” duct rather than the 4 inch soil pipe diy. Do you need a stronger machine for 4 inch pipe. I am completely baffled by the whole thing, lots of you tubers show off their dust system but don’t explain the basics. Can you run a 4 inch system off a shop vac. My workshop is at the same stage as yours I need new lights a long list of jobs but more than anything storage. In another thirty years when your daughter is fixing the wheels on your mobility scooter you will have a shop like Dave Stanton. Cheers John. County Durham

@cjhification
@cjhification 5 жыл бұрын
Andy's dust collector had a 100mm (4 inch) flexible tube on it so a 100mm system would be possible but it's more expensive for the larger systems and Axminster tool's do the 2.5 inch 63mm kit much cheaper in plastic, or a 4 inch kit in steel, for lots more money. My guess would be that for the machines he has 63mm flow is okay. Basically bigger pipes allow more air to flow at the same pressure with less impediment so going bigger is better up to what your tool is designed for, for best flow avoid harsh corners 2 120° bends is better than 1 90° bend. The dangers from plastic systems of static discharge is very low but some people chose to run earthing wires to prevent build up static, this is just done by running screws through the pipe and wrapping wire round the outside to join them all to an earthing point, others point out this causes issues with airflow so you just have to kinda decided for yourself, I don't bother with it. Some tools benefit from chip extraction, which is high volume low pressure, things like planners and thicknesses, and routers, spindle moulders and table saws. Others prefer a vacuum extractor, which is usually lower volume but higher pressure, and is better for the smaller amounts of really small dust that power hand tools tend to generate. Good Machines tend to specify what extraction they require to work correctly. the For my planner thickness and table saw I need bigger so use 4 inch steel reinforced flexible tube that moves around as I didn't feel I could justify the hundreds of pounds for 4 inch pipe in steel or be bothered with DIY it with drainage pipe as I still have work to do in my garage.

What would be the heat difference with your compressor if you 'enclose' it all? Wow, that Swan compressor is impressively quiet, do you have a side room or roof it could go in to to be clear of the dust. My cyclone dust collector is amazing. Don't have any space outside the shop unfortunately - loft is tempting but it would vibrate through the ceiling a fair bit and awkward access to empty the drain valve. Just picked up a cyclone but it might be too small - it looked bigger on the picture! 😂
@cjhification
@cjhification 5 жыл бұрын
@@GosforthHandyman yeah the value issue did occur to me too, I suppose the nice thing about Swan compressors is the painting on the inside so you won't get the rusty brown water coming out the bottom and because of the coating it might not need emptied very often. I've been considering a shed add on to garage for extractor because of the noise of it but it's quite big so not sure about it. Hopefully you received cyclone will assist you, just make sure you have a big collection bin, I don't need to empty mine often case it's the old big trade cyclone from Axminster, got it at just under half price when going to new range, but does mean it has a stupidly big 3 way wheeled base unlike the new one's, which are more compact. Keep up the great content at your own pace!

I made jay bates cyclone stand for its small footprint. I also hang frequently used clamps and other tools from it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppqTqaR7itKoq5Y It's open, but easy to get at the bucket for dumping. The actual cyclone (clearvue or oneida) is irreplaceable in my opinion. Nothing else comes close. I have both a bag and a filter in my shop vac and after a year or so, the filter is still clean. I tried other designs that claim to be "cyclones" but had frequently clogged filters. For example, the Dust Right collector from Rockler, or various lids that fit on small or larger containers. I emptied them frequently, usually before they were half full.

Something like this would suit you well I think. www.recordpower.co.uk/product/camvac-150l-1000-w-compact-wall-mounted-extractor-4-inlet#.W7h40orTWhA It causes a vortex due to the inlet being to the side, and dumps the debris into a bag which is easily changed/emptied. My uncle has the non-bag version of this and it runs well and is not very loud. I have the DX1000 tin can which is similar to yours and I massively regret not going for the bag version that can be hung on the wall. You could have an enclosure but once it’s up on the wall you may not need that- perhaps the exhaust tube could go outside? This makes it even less noisy (you can plug an exhaust hose onto the outlet which is very cool). Anyway, going to finish watching yer vid now :-)

Hi Andy, you might find it a little awkward having your dust collection pipes coming from the ceiling; especially due to your shop being small. How about running it around the walls in your shop? Why not take a look at "Newbie Dan", who is another KZbinr.
