For changing text to block quotes, you don’t need to highlight the text first to convert to a different format. As long as the cursor is at the end of the sentence, you can simply tap the “Aa” and then the format you want and it will convert that paragraph automatically.

If they'd simply introduce some form of margins, I'd consider using it more. On my Mac, I have a general preference for working with apps maximized, and having such long line lengths makes the app completely unappealing for me.

Not a problem. Open a Note, at the top, hit the square with an arrow pointing upwards and one of the options will be Print. Hit that and then you can email the PDF it produces and there are other options.

I’m loving the greater versatility in ios17 regarding pdf and notes etc. I just wish that I could use the Apple pencil with the iphone. Fingers just do not make the best drawing tools, particularly on small screens

Just curious. Why would a combined app with Notes, Reminders, and Calendar be desirable, vs better integration between them? For example, reminders that have a date would show up in calendar, notes could have a toggle to show a certain note in reminders, and so forth.

Thank you so much for the overview of the updates. I use Notes every single day. I like that it has more functionality. I would like to be able to adjust the font size for use with my students that have visual impairments. So far I can only use the header font to access larger sizes. I wish we could adjust the font sizes in the body of the note using point sizes vs the one size header option.

I’ve been waiting forever for them to add the capability to change the color of text! I was really hoping this was going to be one of the changes. It’s been available on the MacOS for a long time, but I’ve been waiting for them to move it to the iOS version. Whenever I’ve needed to change the color of my text, I’ve had to open it on my Mac, change the color and then go back to my iPhone or iPad.

Loved the info since I use notes all the time and was totally blown away when I saw the fountain pen tool - I never knew there were more markers to use! I love using fountain pens for cursive writing so the Apple Pencil just opened up a new way to take notes. The default blue color on the dark mode background is stunning! 🥰 🖋️ 📝

The notes app is great on iPad as well because of the ability to quickly launch a note from the off/locked screen. It has various options like creating a new note every day, or opening the last open note etc. One thing stopping me adopting it for more of my notes (outside of quick capture) is that there is no app on Windows and I need my core notes to be everywhere. So I do quick capture with the pencil on my iPad mostly, and longer term stuff I put into OneNote neatly organised and tweaked a bit.

Thanks for making this good overview video; there are new items and some changes that I was unaware of, until watching. Apple Notes is my primary notes app, and the improvements over time has been why it is the note apps for me. I will state that I would not wish to have the combo app of Notes, Reminders, etc. I've come to realize that in terms of avoiding mental clutter, that some apps should stay standalone. Also, I use some other apps, both first- and third-party ones, that are also single-function apps that do what they do well without added complexities that make the bloated. That's my take; who knows if such a combo app might appear and blow me away, but we'll have to see. Love your videos; keep on!

Paused the video and went and tried the PDF feature. That’s the most useful new feature for me, I think. I suspect the second will be linking. I can see why people want notes/reminders/calendar all in one, but I don’t. I really want a simple to use note taking app with some advanced features. I don’t want a full blown word processor program or sophisticated page layout, but I like that I can use Notes for writing more than notes. Most of all, I want low friction. Anyway, how would smarter integration among your organizer apps suit you (rather than a single app)? I’ve been trying all-in-one organizer apps since the late 80s, and in all that time I’ve not found one that I like. Either they are too simple or too complicated. The interface might be too cluttered (or just poorly designed in other ways) or the features are too buried. Friction. I understand that there are some “systems” that take organizing to a whole new level in terms of user customization. Maybe someday I’ll look into them more and take the time to learn one. Right now, I just want to use an app right away without the app getting in my way. I want less friction, but some advanced features. Also, I’d prefer not to rent more advanced features. I’ll pay more for a pro-edition of an app, but I can’t stand productivity app subscriptions.

Hi Tom. When I search within a note, the search takes me to where the search string appears, and colours it yellow. Great. But if there are multiple occurrences of the search string in the note, I can't seem to find a way to jump to next, etc. What am I missing!! 🥴

HATE the pdf thing. To just view a document you now have to click pull down, click the eye icon and then move the damn menu out of the way. Previously I could just touch it and flick through the pages in full screen. This is all about editing documents. Something I rarely do. Also, all my previously saved pdfs are different size pages now for some reason. All in all I wished I could go back to the previous version

I have to be honest: The Apple *NOTES* app on the iPhone has been getting worse and worse over the years. And ever since I downloaded iOS 16, the app constantly crashed and was glitchy. For example, I used columns in my notes, so that when I would write information in one column, as soon as I typed the very first letter of a word in that column, the cursor would inexplicably jump behind that first letter. So if I wrote the word APPLE, instead of that word appearing as APPLE, the word would instead appear as PPLEA. With the pre-iOS 16 NOTES iterations, if I hit the “next” button, the cursor and screen would automatically move to another column with each “next” button hit. With the post-iOS 16 NOTES, that’s now a thing of the past! It now does this only 50% of the time and if I’m on the wrong side of that 50%, I have to immediately stop writing, thumb over and identify the specific column that I wish to write in. Also, with pre-iOS 16 Notes, if I was writing information in a column, but I needed to see something another column, if I scrolled down or away from the column that I was originally writing in too far, the cursor and the keyboard would just stop and disappear. Why?! That’s dumb. That didn’t happen with NOTES before iOS 16, so why is that happening now? In short, Apple *NOTES* app is now garbage and I hate it. I stopped using it entirely when I bought my iPhone 15 Pro Max thinking the app’s performance would improve with a new OS and much more powerful specs. It didn’t. The same issues are still there. I’m done with *NOTES.*

I use Notes primarily to avoid screen locks on long reads. First I Copy or Select All, then paste the text (in Reader view if I remember) and paste it into an empty Note.

Some Apps allow Select All, some don’t. This isn’t perfect as the copied text lacks some formatting but it is better than facing a blank screen and having to start over or finding I’ve crashed into the Paywall. (I dislike fussing with the Display options)

:O I didn't know the Monostyled text blocks existed, I can tell you with 100% certainty without even using it that it's extremely useful. I have a bunch of scratch notes of code that Notes auto formats in horrible ways like converting quote marks into "Smart Quotes" and capitalizing things strangely.

I’m a software developer, have been for 45 years, and I always have had to work in multiple, ever-changing development environments. I often use both Apple Notes and MS OneNote for copious things, from ideas to do lists, all of which need identifiable code snippets (nothing complex, just an obvious distinction between code and prose/discussion). The monostyled format change is absolutely huge. Another commenter talked about SDEs he knows using VSCode and VIM (really? For notes, ideas and documentation?). I don’t know how many developers use Notes or OneNote the way I do, but I know there are thousands upon thousands of development and coding environments and styles in the world. With the addition of monstyled formatting, Notes becomes a serious contender for a common developer ideas/notes/reminders/thought-engine tool. [Obviously, real documentation is done in a different and more professional way, such as with JavaDoc, Wikis, or a variety of Markdown tools.]
