i always hated big servers, anything with more than 10 active members usually ends up either falling into depravity and banning everyone who isn't 100% on board with it or being so strict about that stuff that you can't even joke about it, i am glad i found my little pockets of people i enjoy talking to

Running a server of 77k members. Been at it since 2016. Took a while to kick off but the goal was to be useful to the community rather than just getting the number up. Also while i agree not every server needs a custom bot, if you have the skills for it, or want to learn programming. Making a bot can reduce the need for gimmick bots that have 50 features but you need only one of them. Simply approach it with "ok, how do i copy this idea in my own way" and boom you have made a great experience in your server with also learning something new. Also after years of running the server, there have been many days where the mouse cursor just hovers over the "delete server" button.

I deal with two large servers (one of them being 80K members) and something I've learned over time about rules, is that you NEED to use contexts of how people are, even if it seems unfair, you need to deal with people who you know are breaking rules out of sheer will. I tend to give extra chances to people who make mistakes due to lack of knowledge or who understand they've made a mistake, but those who like to “play” with the rules are always punished much more severely, this has already caused moments where someone broke a rule in order to have just one more “warn for the collection” directly to a ban, even if the rule was something small, the reason was obvious, and it wasn't something we wanted on a server. Deal with people as people, see how they behave or what they are looking for in the community, to chat or to be problematic.

The point about picking good people to mod is so real. In the club server I'm a mod for, it's pretty small, everyone gollows the rules, so I don’t really have much to do, but I really like it. On the other hand, I'm also in a friend's server, and one of their mods repeatedly broke the rules and was harassing me for literally no reason. I'm pretty sure that person is still a mod, even though the server owner was there and agreed with me that it was harassment.

Smaller servers are just way less intimidating. Only when I started joining small servers was when I finally started using discord more often.

I'm a moderator for a server that has 227k members. The server is very active. Really, the tasks I have to do suck the life out of me. Planning to resign before the year ends. I cannot even hangout with the members since they're worried that I'll warn or mute or ban them if they say something that they thought would offend me while on VC. And the issues within the staff team can be too much to bear at times. Most of the time, I moderate people based on their track record and the way they interact with other members. I'm lenient in certain stuff which I know is a bad thing because some members look at it in a bad light.

If you're using Discord bots for a specific purpose, something you can do to help keep things secure is ONLY GIVE THEM THE PERMISSIONS THEY NEED TO DO THE TASK YOU WANT THEM TO DO, nothing more! For example, if the bots only need to see specific channels, only let it see those specific channels. If all it does is log, only let it send messages in the logging channels. Etc etc. Never give a bot admin, even if it asks for it. There's no reason for a bot to have admin when you can simply give it the permissions to do what it needs. The bots in my server are heavily restricted in what they can do outside of what I need them for.
@Piipperi800
@Piipperi800 Ай бұрын
For the staff security system, one thing that should be critically mentioned is *do not give your staff permissions they really don't need*. For example, a server with a good role handling bot means your staff doesn't need to have role handling permissions. And if you have a bot like Wick to handle kicks and bans, your staff does not need the Discord permissions to ban people. It's simple yet effective when a staff member gets hacked, as there can be very minimal damage done to the server.

I have this one friend who had an active server focused on some discord's bot game. But once he had to leave to focus on own life and the game itself became less fun too. Now 4 years later. My friend is trying to become again a successful server owner. He made a new server, invited me to it. And no matter how much I try to tell to him that "no worries, you already had the experience of it, appreciate what happened, your previous server was and is very successful - it would stay in everyones hearts and fun memories". He just wont agree with it. And that is sad. It like really hit on his ego or something. But like with any generic chatting anime server - they really have their shine moment and then all of people grow up, focus on career and life... and eventually it is less active 🤷‍♀️ I don't see a lot of the point on recreating "successful" servers, unless idk... it's your business or sth.

3:35 I did this a while ago and i had a member of staff tell me to remove it from my bio as it was considered "advertising" which is wild because Discord lets you have external connections in your profile like twitter and youtube, so be careful doing this one as some servers don't like it which i find counter-intuitive.
@Marcella_VT
@Marcella_VT Ай бұрын
It can seam counter intuitive why some discord servers have that rule. But it does make sense. Used to help moderate a fairly big server on discord and they had that rule because we couldn't check every server that people had. And we had a few people do it to scam people or have hate groups on discord. The scam and hate groups part wasn't very common though but it was one of those situations where a few people ruined it for everyone else.

That way, I don't have to type every single one of my links (like carrd, ur discord server, etc) into my bio, and instead have one link that will lead u to ur linktree with all ur links, including ur discord server. I doubt that mods can ask u to remove it now, as it practically isn't advertising as long as u don't click on my linktree

tbh if that's the case then, if u have nitro, change server prof. but if not, ig just remove it lol

How to get a big discord server: 1. Be a KZbinr 2. Make a popular game 3. Be a KZbinr

Can definitely agree on the big server thing. Every large number server I see I have trouble interacting. It's just *too* many people. I never fit in and its just too much for me to handle thus making me stay quiet and never level up in the rank bot thing. It's a sad reality.

way too real. I can never fit in even when I try. in small servers its easier

Two things I usually tell people about having / moderating a big server are that, one, get rid of annoying and toxic people. If the vibe if your server is awful, no one will want to chat. Just because it's making numbers, doesn't mean you should ruin the community. I stop counting the amount of people that get shot down (banned) in their first conversation in the server, simply because of their overall negative attitude. They get a free warning, but after that? No bother keeping them if they won't change Second, have a rule that state stuff like "the staff has it final say in a judgement" or "do not attempt to find loopholes in the rules and exploit them", it's either that, or a five page paragraph on why Dolphins are prohibited on the server, in link with Z accident. The funny part of telling people that is, they usually don't apply what I just said, and then I witness their server burning down in what feels like a server wide roleplay of Sothern American countries after the US paid them a visit.

Let me tell you the story when the level 600 school gyatt walked passed me, I was in class drinking my grimace rizz shake from ohio during my rizzonomics class when all of the sudden this crazy ohio bing chilling gyatt got sturdy, past my class. I was watching kai cenat hit the griddy on twitch. This is when I let my rizz take over and I became the rizzard of oz. I screamed, look at this bomboclat gyatt

i have a server with around 40 people in it about an EXTREMELY niche topic within a bigger fandom, and it already seems huge to me. ive been running the place for 3 months now and focusing on "growing" just seems like sabotage to me, its already a lot to moderate (even with volunteers) i could not imagine moderating much more than that lol

About the leveling system being used as a "moderation tool" not as entertainment, u forgot to say that most bots have random xp range per each message, so if people wanna use it as moderation tool, they should change the xp range to be constant

I had to stop owning a server at some point because it was filled with so much drama and i got tired of it so i passed it down to someone else. This is a good video to those idiots that keep asking me about me helping them with their servers

Is it bad I wish I had the AutoMod Rules/Words you used on your server? There are times I can't figure that shit out, especially the Regex bits. + There's apparently words I missed. Also, great video! ^^

I have a server that has exactly one user on it: Me. I'm gonna set it up one of these days, get roles and channels and yadda yadda yadda, but I haven't had the spoons to dig into all that stuff. It's gonna be for people who like my writing to hang out, so it'll be small as hell (like, probably 20 people max, if that) but that's cool. My writing's too niche to draw a large audience. Probably dead, too, as most of the people are already gonna be in other servers with each other. But it might be nice to see if any of the "silent lurkers" end up joining, people who've only read stories but never commented or interacted. I fear the day I get a message from my mother asking how to install Discord so she can join, though. >.>

I did learn a few things from you. Thank you for that. Though my initial workaround with roles is... No one has admin. Though there exists an admin role, they are limited, and only I am allowed to mess with bots, as my role workaround is very strict and trust based.

One thing you might want to have a bot do is detect when someone sends the same message to every channel on the server at exactly the same time. Auto-delete that and log that it happened. When it happens, you should know that person probably had their discord token stolen and they need to change their password to regain control of their account.
