My son was 18 when he joined the Marines right out of high school. He was killed a year later. I never heard of Metallica before that time but learned from his Marine brothers that he loved them, especially this song. I wish I had known so I could have played it at his funeral. It is really beautiful.

Anytime a rock band pairs with an orchestra, I find it frickin sublime. My 1st experience with the paradigm was the Scorps with the Berliner Philharonic. The soft chords of the orchestral string along with the strident tones of the guitars. It blows my mind. EVERY. TIME.

Dear Robert, Jason, Kirk, James, and Lars Ulrich. I know you probably will never see this message but i figured i would put it in a bottle and hope it makes to you. Your guys music had helped me through tough times in my life. Lars your drumming is so powerful and influenced me to strive to become a percussionist as you are. Your technique with the powerful sound is unmatched from any other. Im a Christian and i have cryed and prayed that one day you will by revelation come to the truth. One day i hope you will become born again in Christ. All of you been under appreciated from the start, outsiders and in the mian stream of music. I will keep it short but one day i hope to see you guys go against the grain of society. I pray and hope i will see and hear you play (Such an Awesome God). James you have inspired me with your testimony of your struggles with alcoholism as it was with me. You may laugh and disregard my message if it even reaches you. If i seen and heard you play that song i would fall to my knees and ball my eyes out!! You have more influence on people than you can ever imagine. Hope this makes it to you. May the Lord Jesus Christ guide you to a new beginning!

I am totally with you on the last part. Last year at Wacken this song was performed by the house-band of Wacken. They rarely get any huge crowds, as they are a coverband only. Well, after they played this song, I saw so many hard-af metalheads crying and shouting for a "Zugabe"... literally best moment of that day. This song heals, in many different ways.

I saw this when it 1st aired on VH1 in 99....this particular performance blew me away...somebody mentioned 'chills' in the comments...I had them over my entire body, along with tears rolling from my eyes. Mind you, I am not fan of heavy metal music by any means --- but I went out and bought the cassette tape for the entire concert (yeah, I'm old, tapes were still out then LOL) When I bought the tape two months after it aired on VH1, some people in the record store (I told y'all I was old --- we had record stores too back in the day) gave me a funny look.... "You like Metallica???" LOL I'm a black woman, you see. But that is the power of music...a beautiful song will transcend and touch anyone, no matter who you are. Glad somebody put this on You Tube, so it can live on, and touch someone else like it touched me 😊

James Hatfield and all of Metallica, make this version feel timeless and effortless. The words, harmony and rythmn are so deliberately calming, resounding and etheral. The song hits and resonates the heart! I love every version, but this is my favourite by far. I never get fed up with listening to this wonderful song which is a testiment of how good this classic "anthem" trully is. Keep entertaining us all Metallica because you are so appreciated.
