I have the same stance as you when it comes to reproduction games, especially ones in the retro community. Often as I browse online for deals I see dishonest sellers that either don't include that information in the description or try to hide it by saying something a long the lines of, "Not intended for collection purposes". You see shady pictures that clearly have the game out of focus. I've even seen sellers go to the extent of getting them dirty to try and pass it off as genuine. I don't mind and understand if people just want to play the game, but to sell it for the same or even more just really grinds my gears. Awesome episode as always Rick!

There is a Goodwill in my town that always prices anything that may look collectible at eBay like prices. Found a great set of Coca Cola plates and they usually sell for about $5 to $6 per plate and it was priced at $3.99 per plate but any other plate of the same size or quality sells for $0.50 cents. I know it’s not the same but they do the same with video games as well at this particular Goodwill.

I'm with you on repros - wouldn't really go out of my way to get one when they're already available for roughly the same price - I have one repro and that's Star Fox 2. Obviously not a game available physically so I let it slide. But for me - it's original or nothing. I'm not too worried about them getting into the wild, but it's always important that if you're a new gamer you need to take the time to determine what the difference is.

I stumbled upon this video going down the KZbin rabbit hole. I appreciate your hustle and how you are building your collection from the ground up. As a game collector myself, I personally don't mind reproduction carts because they (like you said) make it possible to get a copy of an uncommon game if for no other purpose then to display on a shelf. I do have a serious issue with people who try to pass off repro carts as original and even worse those who try to sell them at a unrealistic price. Being completely honest, I also kind of take issue with the fact that you pick up games/accessories/etc... at Goodwill/thrift stores only to turn around and sell them/trade them in at a markup. This rubs me the wrong way mostly because I personally would never pick up a game with the intention of selling it - if I buy it, it's going on a shelf. If I don't need it, I leave it for someone else who might need it. I totally understand that this is how you are building up your collection (and your collection is very impressive) but I'm not a fan of this practice. Flipping things purchased at Goodwill is also leading to an increase in prices because they do now check places like eBay and tend to price things closer to "market value" more than they used to. In any event - great video and keep up the good work.
@retrorick4 жыл бұрын
I can see your point for sure. To each their own. I guarantee if I don’t pick it up, the next person that comes by and sees it is doing the same thing. It’s the nature of the market these days. I really appreciate you checking out the channel and your input my friend!

I don't know how to feel about it but the Goodwill in the Charlotte, NC area allocates all video game merchandise to a separate store called the Grid. So you basically will never find a diamond in the rough but everything is in one location and the prices are around market value or bit higher sometimes.

My problem with repros is that in flea market settings, Grandma buying some furniture doesn't know shit about video games. So the one video game booth is largely targeting a non-savvy customer and can upcharge them. And they won't know what they're buying.

If you see it, get in closer and see if it says "interactive" under the logo, and make sure the price is decent.
