Fandom concensus is that Grandma was so obsessed with death she forgot how to let her children live. Whether that makes her a murderer or not, that's individual interpretation. Personally, I think she caused/allowed a few deaths (Molly, Barbara, Calvin, Milton, herself), but I don't think there was a curse. Death catches everyone eventually. Theirs just happened to be... out of the ordinary Edit: confused the name of the twins, my bad team

@ameliziou47765 ай бұрын
@@cakeisthebestintheworld yeah, i know, i just meant it in the more "outlandish" way. Like, sure, Sam could've broken his neck by falling off the swing, but it was "outlandish" in the sense of he got shot out and actually flew before violently being smeared against the cliff side. Thats what I mean with "out of the ordinary"
@Scottthespy135 ай бұрын
I kind of think of it as both. One of the defining characteristics of 'curses' as they exist in reality is that they only work if you believe in them. They're self-fulfilling prophesies, where we have this negative outlook on our minds at all time and either attribute every bad luck and mistake to the curse or we actively cause bad things to happen out of fear, anger, and apathy. In the case of this game, I think the 'family curse' was an over-reliance on stories to help them through hard times. They got so used to sensationalizing and glamorizing the deaths of the people around them that they stopped seeing it as negative, as a thing to be actively avoided. It made them careless. We see so many injuries and reckless decisions...putting a swing at the edge of a cliff, leaving the baby alone in the bath, climbing around the roof of a crumbling house while 22 weeks pregnant. The whole family is so convinced of the 'curse' they don't bother to act safely, so convinced they'll die anyway. The one guy who *did* try to be safe lasted right up until the day he decided to throw caution to the wind. They all believed death was coming for them and those around them, so they acted in ways that made it happen. The family *was* cursed, by their own recklessness and inability to face harsh truths.

The fact that the only death Edith herself witnessed was her mothers, is why theres no fantastical element to it. Same for grandma edies, she was old so Edith would have been told it was "old age" but then because nobody ever told Edith the truth, having to put the peices together left room for imagination, wish fulfilment and some light hearted tragedy. She never met most of them, only knew great grandma edie, her parents and her brothers. I still don't know if she ever even got to meet her child before dying. It's also interesting that Dawn didn't change her name or her childrens names to Sanjays, they were all finches to the end.

It's like Grandma Edie embraced the Deaths and the Curses, while Ediths mother tried to get away from it all, tired of all of the deaths and Edie celebrating it all. The story Edith read getting cut off too soon, as well, parallels Edies death being cut off, unseen, and interrupted. Something Edith never got to see. Edie kept making more and more graves, memorializing people before they even died. Ediths mother didn't want to dwell on the past, so much so she tried to hide it all away. Sealing the doors, never telling any of the stories. They were two different extremes. Two different ends. I like to think, whatever may have been happening to such a large family.. It ended with Edith, who, rather than hide from the past, or grasp onto the past too hard- She embraced the stories as they were. Stories. And embraced that her family got to live at all. She took it in healthily and was able to write it all down in a way that her child could get to see. It's tragic she passed, but she was able to give that knowledge to her child, who could take it in and not be stuck in a past, or hiding from it at all. She did for the kid, what she wanted done for her. Laying it all out. And so, with her death, was the end of a cycle.

A 13 year old kid who died alone on the beach, who nobody even bothered to check up on him during/after the storm, and if what Dawn's poem said was true, then they didn't even remember him, but that could every much be exaggerated like most of the stories are. At least some characters got a "peaceful" death i.e they weren't fully aware what was going to happen or they had completely expected it, but Gus probably had enough time to recognise he was going to die, be terrified, and also know that no one was coming to help as they probably hear him if he tried to call out for help. Edie loved to make death into something larger than life, and to profit off the wild stories she can invent from fact, so she definitely gave all the details to the comic book company so they could make the sensationalisation of her daughter's disappearance and assumed death as accurate as possible. There were a lot of adaptations made of the story, so she kept the Cryptkeeper parody for a reason.

I know everyone gets destroyed by Lewis' or the Baby's segment, but for me it's always Grandpa Sam's that obliterates me. Bro spent his entire life surrounded by misery but still did his best to make the most of it, only to pass that misery down to his last surviving daughter with his own unfortunate death. It tears me up.

I'm so happy to see you play this Kwite, I'm sad I missed it live! I played this game from start to finish so many times, I don't play games that often - or at least I didn't used to. But this game is just... so incredible, and sad, its special to me for some reason, it makes me actually feel so many things. So happy you enjoyed the game

okay i read a theory about barbara's death, that she actually had polio, which was what ended her career and was disabled, which is why the painting of her has her with the crutch. she died by falling over the railing due to one of her legs not being as strong as the other. edie was in denial about her disability, and that her death was caused by an accident, so she made up a story that turned barbara into an even bigger star post death.

Spoiler/question!!! I thought walter was on an abandoned train track, only just realized the rumbling was a train passing overhead, and it was delayed that day, but i thought it was an abandoned railway, as it would likely need to have been repaired after 30 years, or 10. I'm confused so as to why maintenance didnt question the small vault door on the railway.
@weirdcakes3045 ай бұрын
There’s an interpretation that since the train tracks are very close to the cliff side, Walter fell off the cliff and drowned to death. His childhood bedroom does have a lot of ocean imagery, after all.
@一二05 ай бұрын
I would love to answer your question but unfortunately I’m not part of the maintenance crew
@stephenking34725 ай бұрын
@@weirdcakes304 Yes i agree with that, the grave does show him on a cliff, but why hide that cliffside in a forest (in the flashback), she was relatively direct with the other kids just dying, so why would Walter have a completely opposing death, I feel like him dying before he saw the sea would hurt more, so its a coin-toss for sure.
@weirdcakes3045 ай бұрын
@@stephenking3472 Well a lot of the deaths in this game stretch the truth to where it’s hard to tell if what happened was real or not. Saying as Edie is obsessed with stories, I think she would prefer one with a more tragic end. Like how it’s more likely Barbra got killed by her boyfriend, yet Edie kept the story where she got devoured by monsters. You said I’d be more sad if Walter never got to look at the sea again, so maybe the story with him getting hit by a train would be more appealing to her. But thats just my personal interpretation, honestly I still don’t know where I stand on how he died.

Its kinda funny how through the years I always find different youtubers playing this game and I always watch the videos, and as I have gotten older along the game I understand more and more from it. I wanted to write my BA on art games, and Edith Finch actually might be a really good case study of using mechanics in story telling. Heh, I might get my mom to play it, beacuse I already know the plot, but she doesn't.

the deaths were always so sad but so interesting how they had us go through it- i love this game- listening to all the stories were so emotional and fascinating, like lewis was one that always kinda got me thinking more, i love the details of his world coming more and more and how it gets harder to focus/see on his work to the player...a lot if not all make it more obvious that it was not a curse, but its still so interesting to me

man what the fuck me being currently lost in videogames because the real world sucks connects to me in a real way I always connect so heavily with some in game characters (and refuse to play games where i cant connect to the MC) and then I am incredibly attached all the deaths were pulling my strings but the final death did me dirty and just ripped them apart im still feeling COLD on the inside, shortness of breath, on the verge of tears and unsure what to do now, as if I was that person and now I'm in someone else's body
