I think you are all 100% right not going Electric at this time. Getting both engines the same and working will make a huge differance

I am relieved for you to stay with Diesel. An electric engine system could too easily have become a bottomless financial pit. And remember the clouds! I wish you three a Happy New Year!

Kudos to you guys! Very smart move staying with continuity on the engines. FYI: everyone who has electric engines is lamenting on the lack of range plus charging problems, stray current st etc. For example the Wynns, the Beadreau’s etc etc, electric dinghy’s suck as well ie Sophisticated Lady. Forget electric propulsion for salt water; it does last long.

Congrats on the engine solution, makes a lot of sense. Hope you or Trinidad shop/mechs can also make the starboard engine more reliable. I am beginning to think the simpler engine designs are better- diesel or electric. Doodles lost his new electric powered cat when water intrusion reached the canbus and shut down both engines. You probably know this already, but adding distilled water to a maintenance free bat (not gel, pop out the plugs) and charging at higher voltage (like the scooter charger) for a short time, then regular charge, can de-sulfate bat and give it new life. Scooters- Very useful- Have seen cruisers adapt their scooter so it can haul large items even sheets of plywood and PV panels. Only concern is the safety factor with the lith ion bats- charge outside and only when you are onboard.

100% agree with the second diesel over electric, but then Im not a fan if electric (yet) for a cruising boat. You probably dont remember but I brought our Hylas 46 “Nepenthe” down to Trinidad in 2021 almost immediately after they reopened from COVID. I had her hull painted with Awlgrip and a whole host of other projects and was very happy with the work and prices. Both yards are great but I was at Peakes myself and I like their operation. We will be making our way back down with Zia in the com8ng months andplan to br8ng her down to Trinidad for a bunch of different work. Hope to reconnect down there! Happy New Year! SV Zia😊

Best wishes for your new year. I support your change of heart about electric. Diesel works (your issues with one engine IS an exception) and with a few relatively inexpensive service items a diesel will keep working (mostly). - - Been watching you for a while, keep up the good work with your videos.

Five years ago I crewed on Britican and one day we had to get some parts from a chandlery so we took the dingy from Le Phare Bleu to Prickly, the ride to there was nice and calm however when we went back there were 6-8 ft waves and I can tell you that was scary as heck. Trinidad is absolutely the place to be for boat work, friendly skilled people for a very reasonable price.

You made a good decision regarding diesel vs electric Eric. Diesel, diesel, diesel, is the only way to go. Electric boat workers are not around enough to support the electric motor and save money is nonsense. Even the boat manufacturers haven't worked all the bugs out yet.

Good plan to stay with diesel, especially for cruisers on a budget. Electric Diesel hybrid Would be the better why to go if you can afford it. I haven’t seen a straight electric setup that would replace what a diesel does that’s affordable, at least for now.

Sounds to me a trip to T&T is a very good plan. Personally, I expect the future of electric drives on yachts to be a pod, sort of like a saildrive that is totally sealed and just has a heavy cable that comes through the hull through a gland.

How about some good news, upgrading the engines is the best approach financially speaking and less time consuming. Electric motors are not the solution for cruisers, their electronic control systems do fail as well. Also, the huge battery bank and solar arrays needed to run them is simply too much hassle. I believe you took the right decision both for the engine upgrade as well as going to Trinidad for the work to be done. Cheers, Richard

The electric motor sounds great but there’s to many systems that can fail for different reasons. Having a circuit board go rather than a fuel pump I’d choose the fuel pump.

Nothing wrong with two diesel engines. Your boat was not designed to be full electric. You can still be relatively green by increasing your battery bank and going almost full solar with a backup generator for the rainy days.

Friends of ours on their cat repowered for $12k , 2 rebuilt diesel engines. Electric really isn’t there yet. You’ll be running a generator all the time and you’ll loose space having to store all those extra batteries. Just get the motors rebuilt , it’s cheaper than new engines and they will be like new.

As a lo term liveaboard sailor. We wanted a new cat, and have been talking with builders. electric is great but you spend (in our case) a million dollar to get electric systems. and then. In Asia we have frequent areas with 3-4-6 days no wind. And you need a really big genset to keep up with that. That weight and costs make us believe that diesel is still the best solution. Let alone for an old boat, going electric just does not make any financial sense.
