A lot of this mobile welding gig isn’t really welding. I bet only 1% of what I do is actually welding. But you gotta be a 10 trick pony if you want to be successful as a solo guy, so that’s what I became. From rails to heavy equipment repair a ton of different skills besides fabrication and welding come into play daily. So before you run out and buy that engine drive take a look at a typical day for me.
Here are the tools that helped me the most in this video-
Post And Pipe Level- amzn.to/3K8sZwi
Pipe Wrap- amzn.to/35zSEiu
Hobart Welder- amzn.to/3iXi4tE
Face Shield- amzn.to/3u6vt9b

Sometimes you have to see things for what they are. That railing is not a Tuna Tower on some trophy fishing boat. You make it professional and make it strong. Done. I'm a foam roller guy when it's windy. Just spray the can into the foam. Then I go max out. Great for smoothing your drips and runs, too.

About the painting, I’ve discovered that a small disposable roller and a paper tray are my new best friends for paint jobs out in the field. That combination is damn near wind proof. It’s a little more expensive and trouble, no doubt, but it outweighs the other stuff, for me. The key is keeping the roller relatively “dry” to avoid drips. When you’re done, you just toss everything in the trash.

A good way to line up handrail pipe for butt welding is using aluminum angle and two chain vice grips. It makes it real easy to leave a little gap to fill instead of having to bevel the pipe ends.

Anthony, smart move pre-painting most of the pipe surfaces. It’s a lot easier to paint the pipe all around when it isn’t yet installed and touch up any missed or damaged sections when your done later, especially in a windy work area. I enjoyed seeing the pipe being bent too. I think it made it more custom looking and stronger at the end. Nice job!

Anthony, I love the "Low Rider' pipe stands.....if you are ever having problems with yellow paint covering, some brands do not cover well.....get a can of quick dry primer that is white, zap the pipe or what ever, then hit with the yellow, the yellow will be brighter and much better looking....I know, it takes longer, place I worked ,I would sometimes have to do 3 or more coats, cheap ass paint on brand new 4" pipe...now that I think of it, I think it was Rustoleum, but lacked the proper amount of pigment.....then they wanted it installed somewhere else, it was never dry.....tons of hand prints and gurus....and still repainted on site, .Rusteoleum is great paint, but slow drying, they do have some fast dry spray bombs , Krylon is a good fast drying paint also,,,,,I have found if you skip on good paint, it will bite you in the ass......the job looks bad and customer will only see the bad paint and not the great weld.....take it form an old geezer, buy good paint......Bravo, Paul

never had luck with 120V welders for flux in past, older days, I have run my Lincoln 180 on generator. I do have long cords, but they are very heavy! but your welder looked up to par, a guy I know recently bought 1 for his shop, Hobart 140, but it kept popping breaker after 1-2 minutes. he replaced breaker, still did it, so took it back & got a 220V one, no issue, & I never got to try his 140 out. I looked at those, as well as Lincoln 140, but besides not enough cash presently, nervous it may not work on extension cord, and yes I have 10 gauge cords for sheet metal auto-body work, I prefer 120V, but its older China made transformer machine, never tried anything heavy, but it does absolutely wonderful for sheet metal. originally bought as a joke, it did so well I made it my primary auto-body welder.

That slag inclusion could very well be because you were pushing the rod for that weld when it was almost flat position. On the verticles gravity pulls the slag down away from the weld, but when you push on a flat you keep pushing more and more slag infront of the puddle and sometimes itll get in the way.

Railings are a pain in the proverbial butt! But not as big a pain as painting. After my last railing job where it was a bespoke railing for a customer to fit himself, I have come to the conclusion that the customer paints the product or it arrives galvanized only. This applies to railings only. On the job you did I would have just brush painted it. Tidy work there young man and the otrch work making the bend was great and showed good skills, far better than mine. Nice welding on the rollover frame too!
