I'd be willing to bet that the reliability is higher and maintenance costs lower on the Yamaha. That should be a factor in choosing as well. As a previous BMW owner, I think I'd choose the Yamaha.

I'd guarantee the Yamaha wouldn't need to be on a trickle charger to start after two weeks in the shed. My XR drains the battery if not ridden regularly. My 20 + year old Kawasaki starts on the button with 4-6 months layaways. Something you will need to accept if you buy anything Euro...... they are just not as reliable no matter how much owners try to convince you. I'm on my 2nd beemer and they are just not as reliable.

@@martythompson6509 most modern bike run the battery down. It's the ECU and the parasitic drain. It's OK on cars but there battery's are almost 10x the size. I give mine a go on the trickle charge once a month. Battery over 7 years old now. Bet if I had the bmw alarm fitted I'd have 3 dead batteries by now. Bike is a f800gs

I have a 2015 FJ-09 (first gen Tracer) and am spending a lot of time and extra money to sort it out and overcome design flaws in wind flow, clutch noise, and engine vibration that makes all-day riding and touring distractingly uncomfortable. MANY owners of 1st and 2nd gen FJ/Tracers note these issues. I suspect the 2022 and newer models corrected many is not all of these design flaws. Depending on what your riding style is, I recommend looking for one of the newer models.

I have test ridden both of the bikes now. I just felt at home on the Tracer 9 GT far far more. drove out of the dealer on the yammie and was comfortable immediately. The dash on the Tracer looks silly but honestly once your riding you dont notice it and i found the layout actually quite good. I also disagree on the ergonomics. test riding both for an hour i felt the tracer was better for ergo and looks which is two points you gave the the XR. i currently ride a 2012 XJ6 diversion and it starts to become uncomfortable at 1.5hrs and useless for longer than that for me. I rode tthe tracer for 1hr and felt so fresh my body felt no worse than being in a car really. givs great confidence for commuting and touring I would hands down by the Tracer (and think i actually will). I would also hands down pay a bit more for the Tracer if the right hand screen could be used for phone connection and if it was keyless ride but wouldnt stop me buying one now necessarily - but might make me hold off for the 2022 model to see if they add those.

@@mymotosai5036 I haven't test ridden the tiger no, but to be honest I watched a youtuber review of a test ride of the Tiger and they had also already test ridden the other two and there review made me happy that i wouldnt be interested in test ridding the tiger. I cannot remember the specifics of the review to be honest but again the positives they were taking from the tiger over the tracer just didnt track from having test ridden the tracer. you can never tell without test riding of course but the review of the tiger just made me think that in essence it wasnt for me. I am also basing this on the fact that if i were to pay that much money for a motorbike it would have to be if not my forever tourer my forever commuter and Yamaha has to be the easiest to self service long term. I am tempted to pay a visit to triump to test a speed twin just for fun so might take a tiger for a spin at the same time but honestly a tracer 9 gt with a set of givi trekker cases seems like the dream commuter/tourer to me!

I do not remark a problem with the rear brake. But I had already to clean the pistons of the front brake and I must still clean the rear brake. Maybe than the brake works better. Thank you once more, Scott, for your honest opinion and I agree with it. The Tracer GT has that pleasant CP3 engine which is almost addicting and a very smooth and precise gear box - The quick shifter works superbly but in terms of technology concerning the tft screen and the way information is displayed the XR takes the Lead , no doubt about it. My "Old" MT-10 had a powerful front brake but the feel was very wooden, no feedback through the lever at all. All I did to fix it was fit some SBS-HS brake pads to the front, problem solved for very little money. Totally agree with you, display and controls are way better on the BMW. For me the engine and semi-active fork and suspension were more important. Also a plus on the BMW would be the emergency call system (hope it's never needed). I myself decided for the Yamaha (didn't actually ride the XR) because of the of the reasons stated before and being about 2k Swiss francs cheaper in Switzerland but would love to see the display, connectivity (also for navigation) and controls of the BMW on the Yamaha. Think their both fantastic bikes and it was a very hard decision.

@@andy42x I had a 2009. Really nice bike, but there was a very dangerous problem with fuel fittings failing and leaking gas directly onto the header. It was a known problem for years and BMW did nothing for out of warranty owners. Until recent lawsuits caused them to have a change of heart. The latest things showing up are the plastic cable to throttle plate attachment failing without warning. The repair is approx $1200 each. These things along with the final drive failures have taken a great long distance touring machine and turned it to a machine I don't trust anymore. The new water cooled bikes are fantastic ,but how will the hold up overtime? I'm switching back to the Yamahas I grew up on.

For anybody who assumes the Yamaha would have lower maintenance costs, I would point out that in the US Yamaha specifies a 4,000 service interval (excluding valves). If you're going to put miles on this bike, servicing will happen more frequently than most (all?) BMWs so over time the total costs will probably be quite close. You'll also enjoy the hassle of more frequent servicing so you're costs will be higher in terms of your time. That's just considering maintenance costs. Costs in time and money of ride-ending reliability issues will most likely favor the Yamaha.

What about Maintence intervals and general cost of ownership? I had a 2015 FJ09 (Tracer in Europe at the time) crazy fast and fun. I put over 33,000 miles on her. Love it! Downside; the stock seat was horrible! Went with a Corbin. Looked great but my butt doesn’t have eyes and went though two types of foam and ultimately gave up on Corbin. Then I found a private seat guy who I shipped my stock seat to and he made a great seat from it. My butt was happy. I miss that bike but I knew it was time to say goodbye because I was getting way overconfident on her and I’m no spring chicken so sold her and bought my first in fifty plus yrs. of riding, a Harley. Like the Harley but I don’t get the thrill of the FJ09. That triple is sweet!!! Now with SO much improvements to the newest version I’m very tempted to go back to one. I see your point on the tiny split screen and old guys like me will have an issue with seeing stuff on it. The solution for me would be to pull over and adjust as needed but I don’t see me squinting and riding as it’s too distracting for safety. Still I love the bike.

IMHO, Yamaha is missing a "red line" within its bike designs in general. Tracer 700 for example looks really nice at the front and the R1 ist still beautiful! But most of the current models are at least "strange" (MT09, MT07, XSRs,) or really ugly (MT-10), although all of them are really good bikes.

#5 “Looks” my partner just also commented that the F900XR is much prettier. Seriously though those roads you ride look so smooth that any bike is going to seems good. On the tricky narrow lanes and various busy roads in south west England the F900XR is a great bike. (My partner said the pillion on the F900XR is much better than the Tiger 900 GT too.) You refer to "active suspension". Do you mean electronically adjustable to various settings or the suspension changes its damping according to road conditions reacting in milliseconds etc? These are two very different things.
@NothingToProve
@NothingToProve 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, yes and no. There are just two pre-set settings for the Electronically Controled Suspension, no user defined 🙁 I've copied from Yamaha.com for your reading pleasure 😁: KYB Electronically Controlled Suspension Jointly developed with KYB to deliver both sporty performance and a comfortable ride, the TRACER 9 GT features an electronically controlled suspension. The suspension provides optimum damping force that is based on real-time running conditions for great riding comfort and feel from the road. Based on input from the 6-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and the Hydraulic Unit (HU), the Suspension Control Unit (SCU) calculates the optimum settings for suspension damping. The damping adjustment mechanism is solenoid-driven which enables changes to the damping force to be reflected quickly, and big damping force changes are possible. This suspension system generates steady damping force even when the suspension piston is moving slower, which contributes to stabilizing the motorcycle’s attitude when starting from a stop as well as stabilizing the chassis attitude when accelerating, braking and cornering. The electronically controlled system controls the rebound and compression damping for the front fork and rebound damping for the rear shock.

I think the Tracer 9 looks great!! I'm on the market for a new bike and have been considering this (base version), the Tracer 7 and the Tiger Sport 660. The T9 would cost me 3k more than the TS660, but comes with €1000 free accessories (as does the T7 which is €2.5k cheaper). The Tiger comes with panniers included. I'm a new rider, just passed my test and only have 1000km on a '09 Bandit 650S and prior to that a 1500km trip on a Honda XR150L (through rural Vietnam over two weeks). I'm 187cm, 100kg, with 32' inseam. I'm looking for something to use for weekend fun rides, hopefully some multi day tours and eventually 2-up riding once I gain more experience (and my gf comes around to the idea). Hoping to do a Europe tour next summer. What do you think would suit me best and is best bang for the buck? Hesitant to drop all my savings for the T9 but it does seem like something I could keep for years...im test riding the TS660 this weekend curious if it will be too cramped.
