I made a slight mistake and forgot to come back to the "Milestones" toggle in the video. But not to worry, the reason I forgot it is that it's the simplest of them all - ""Milestones" contains chronologically sorted table views of two databases: "Achievements" and "Disappointments". During my weekly review (video coming very soon), I enter any noteworthy Achievements and Disappointments along with notes on why I succeeded or failed (respectively to each DB). By keeping these in databases like this, it's easy to connect and roll up weekly documentation of successes and faultless into Monthly, Quarterly, and Annual views where such a record can be quite revealing. 2 NEW Programs just announced here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZnNeX93n9t7pac ⭐ My brand new Notion training program: www.FastTrackNotion.com 🚀 Info on the "Notion Life Design" course with PPV: www.NotionLifeDesign.com Get my NOTION TEMPLATES⚡ and join the NEWSLETTER📰 at: www.yearzero.io/notion-templates And join me on Twitter at twitter.com/augustbradley - my most frequent discussion is there.

Hey August, thank you for all your videos. You got me hooked on systems thinking, and notion. I was wondering, where would those databases life? I assume in one of the vaults, but which one?
@tomcrehan3 жыл бұрын
@@MeandMops A few months ago August shared a video on his revised Command Center: "New Command Center V2 for Notion Life Operating System." In it he showed how all of his databases now live in a stack on that Command Center page. It's great. Clean, simple, logical. I find it more aesthetically pleasing and functionally (for me at any rate) it works much better. (FYI, the databases used to be "orphaned" over on the sidebar.) Here's a link to the video. Around 5:46 is when he talks about the database collection move: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5TZYat9ep2ZqLc. Note: the vaults are themselves databases and they live under that same stack.

I guess this is left as an exercise for the viewer now. I'd love to hear if anyone else finds processes for coming to one's own Alignment Base, covering most of what's important.

I get really anxious if I feel overwhelmed, everyone does, and when I started using Notion that's exactly what I felt, everything was scary but now that I understand how it works I enjoy waking up at 4 am so I can drive forward my goals and organizing my life is one of the steps I'm taking. I feel like I am age 7 again and learning to knit. You wake up and you understand how it all fits together. I also feel like I am 35 again and discovering Covey after serious PND. I really like the philosophy of PILLARS PIPELINES AND VAULT. It is a SYSTEM that resonates with me. NOTION is the tool to do it, to get your life on track with the train running on those tracks. It is a great system to help keep anxiety and depression at bay. More on that later, as I am going to build my business on what I have learned to combat serious depression and anxiety. Learning both, PPand V plus NOTION, is a serious time commitment but like Covey says REAP what you SOW... The natural Laws. This video series is like undertaking a subject that lasts a term you read or watch, you take active notes, you practise, you use sectional learning, and then you review again. I have gathered many templates and tools but as my guiding principles are based around Covey thinking, I have decided that this system and tool is the most useful for me at the moment.

I'm a few weeks into building my life system using your frankly incredible notion system and it's been a supremely rewarding experience so far. It feels like I'm taking the many different threads of self-improvement, life and business management that I've been dabbling with for years, and weaving them into something cohesive. The dots are starting to connect in a way that I don't think they have before and it feels really amazing! Thank you for putting this out there in such detail, it's really great. One thing that I definitely screwed up is with not watching all the videos in sequence, which has led to me building the system kind of randomly based on the order I watched them in. This has had the effect of feeling like I'm building the airplane while we're in the air and is at once terrifying and exhilarating!
@augustbradley4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chris. If the dots are all scattered, it's hard to comprehend and grasp them. We need structure to see and interpret the patterns to make sense out of them. And there are patterns, we just have to find them. That's where discovery happens. Awesome to hear that your are progressing in putting things together in a way that works for you!

I wanted to ask if you can make a video on life pillar advice more of what kind of questions to ask ourselves to find goals to focus on, foundations to help us with life and how to integrate new life aspirations and how to research topics that can help us with obstacles on our progress thanx
@augustbradleyАй бұрын
Hi Kevin, thanks for the feedback! I'm really happy to hear it's been helpful. I'm glad our paths have crossed. Great questions, and I'll consider those in future videos - though a lot of past videos cover those topics. In fact, the entire PPV system addresses foundations to help with life - how to integrate new life aspirations and research topics that can help with obstacles. All of that is inherent in the PPV system. You make a good suggestion on looking at the kinds of questions to ask oneself when defining goals - though really, that flows from the value goals that we set, which again is inherent in the PPV system. I would encourage you to consider joining the Notion Life Design Program, where we do all of these things in a much deeper way, and with a lot more support and access to me and the team. We can address specific questions you have, and you'll benefit from the direct conversations we have with other members and their questions. We go much deeper in the NLD program, which will be launching again in the next few weeks at notionlifedesign.com. Regardless, there's an awful lot covered in the KZbin videos here on exactly those topics, so I encourage you to dive into that as well. Hope that helps!

**Video Summary** 0:00 Intro This video will cover the alignment zone dashboard which is one of the two most important dashboards in the system. The other being the Action Zone dashboard. The design of the system is to emphasize focus and alignment Focus so that as you're working hour to hour you are dealing exclusively with what matters, this is what the action zone dashboard works with. Alignment is all about making sure that the task or action you're working on is the right thing to be focused on relative to your larger aspirations and goals. The whole purpose of the alignment zone is to ensure the tasks you've set as priorities are advancing the projects, goal outcomes, life pillars, and ultimately the guiding principles of your life. The other part of the alignment zone is the review sessions, these will be covered later. These are essential for making the alignment zone work. This video will be a big picture overview of the alignment zone with future videos going deeper into the various components that make it up. Weekly/Monthly review Projects Database Goals Database Pillars Database 2:25 [image] 2:40 Command Centre Update The focus zone was renamed the focus and alignment zone. 3:01 Overview At the bottom are quick links to various databases and dashboards under 'Execution Dashboards'. These are just quick links for ease of navigation. At the very bottom are the Action Items this is the task database. As we go up the pillar to pipeline pyramid we go through the execution pipelines, goal pipelines, Life pillars. The pillars are the narrowest items that everything below is in support of. They are also the fewest. The action items are the most numerous as they are the smallest units of work broken down. Projects are the next smallest units of work but are more consolidated than tasks and action items. The goal pipeline has two components The Goal Outcomes are the measurable results you want to achieve and complete. The value goals are softer and more aspirational. The Life Pillars are the ongoing elements that keep the roof up, lights on, and keep things functioning. If these collapse your life will be in chaos. Every one of the goals, projects, and by extension action items is in support of at least one of the pillars. Typically you will want to link them through relations. At the top of the Dashboard is the insight area which is the pinnacle of the self-reflection you do at the outset to understand who you are, where you want to go, and who you want to be. 5:40 Guiding Principles These are the results of a process you go through where you really reflect on what matters to you, what you want out of your life, what you want to become, what your aspirations are etc. You need to go through this reflection because this is the North Star that will guide everything else. If you don't have a very clear sense of what matters to you, what's important, what you want to achieve, and why you want to achieve it, then the system is operating without any direction. This is the result of a process, the way you get to this very clear, tightly articulated endpoint is by going through a reflection process. The system has to be aligned to your identity to be effective. If you haven't done any type of major self-assessment recently then before you build the system you go through this process. To give a sense of what you are trying to achieve with that process there are four elements the are the culmination of August's self-assessment process. At the top is the sharpest, most pointed, definite, at the bottom they are more abstract and foundational to who you believe you are and what matters to you. If any of the elements below speak to your authentic self, USE THEM! People will resonate with a lot of these items and that's ok. The guiding principles are colored in orange as are the life pillars, goal pipeline, and execution pipelines to denote the pyramid, with the other supporting elements colored in yellow. 7:40 Central elements Ultimately come to a single word which August refers to as the state of being, in his case the word is 'rising', to improve, climb and grow in his life and relationships and business through the process of focus and alignment. He has prioritized the areas of Family, business, and health in his life to achieve this state of being. For each of these areas, he has specified more precisely what he wants to improve in each area. 10:10 Drive and motivation What drives you? August's examples are Personal and Family, Deep satisfaction of creating something worthwhile, Thrill of discovery, curiosity, desire for elegant design, and intrinsic fit. 11:12 Purpose and Why Why do you do the things you do, what's the why and purpose behind your actions and aspirations? August's examples are personal and family, have an impact on others at scale through life-enhancing ideas and inspiring aesthetics, life experiences that touch the root of being. 12:33 Foundational Core This goes to the essence of who you see yourself as, it's the bottom and possibly the most important. You write out a few lines of what defines who you are. This changes periodically, perhaps once a year or so, part of your reviews will be checking in on these things. Augusts examples: Experience the deepest forms of life through the most capable mind and body I can create. Maximally love and support the people I'm closest to. Empower broader circles of people with as much impact as possible. Embrace, foster, and champion mindful, thoughtful, caring, and artistic values. Be courageous. Stay true. Create maximal value. Be useful. 15:24 Life Pillars The pillars are what everything is in support of, you want to have a fairly small, tightly defined group of them that covers everything in your life that's important and require ongoing maintainece and work. August has organized his by three categories, these are represented in the command center near the focus & alignment category: Growth Business Home/life A question that was commonly asked: If you are organizing by pillars, pipelines, and vaults why are they not sorted this way? PPV is about the assets and organizing the databases and pages in Notion. It's a practical implementation to keep the side dashboard organized. What matters are the life pillars and these are the three categories of them in August's system. The specifics of the pillars in August's system will be covered later, but the key takeaway is that everything is in support of the pillars and is in some way tagged in relation to them. 17:10 Pillar support These are the things in your system that are delivered on the pillars but are not tasks or projects ( these are pipelines). Not everything is in a pipeline and these are just the habits and routines that support the pillars. Health and fitness MindsetMindset and identity sculpting This is part of the morning routine when the Notion system is started up each day. This is a page that is a collection of things that inspire or provide wisdom from many pieces of wisdom to internalize. Remember Identity; about becoming the person who can achieve the goals you want to achieve. Goals You could add a nutrition database if you wanted to. 20:50 Goal Pipelines This is in the middle of the pyramid, there are 2 kinds of goals and a video will cover this in detail later. With the layout, you can open any 2 toggles and see how they connect and relate to one another Goal outcomes are what you need to track results and progress to hold yourself accountable or not. August found that if he simply started to think of goal outcomes it would feel very shallow and transactional. This is why he creates value goals first which are a little softer and more abstract. Value goals Example: I want to have a thriving business; this is quite abstract and difficult to define, but you nonetheless have a sense of what it means Every one of the goal outcomes has a value goal linked and vice versa 23:13 Execution Pipelines These are on the bottom of the pyramid where you make things happen. The projects are designed to help us move towards our goal outcomes, every goal outcome must have a project or it's not progressing. In this table, you can see whether or not every goal outcome has projects laid out and connected with relations to tell you that it's moving forward. If you see one without any projects or tasks then you have a problem and it's clear you need to add projects or turn it to an inactive state. Each goal outcome has a status assigned 23:50 Projects have statuses assigned as well 24:30 In every case, a project is serving a goal outcome and every goal outcome needs a project assigned to it to move it forward. Projects attach to action items Every single project that is designated 'in progress' must have action items If you see an empty cell for action items for an 'in progress' project you know it's stalled. Action items do not all necessarily link to a project, goal outcome assigned. They are a bit more discretionary, but all of them are serving a pillar, but sometimes it's not worth the time to enter the tags into the database. Bigger tasks are assigned a pillar and a project so when you go to the projects page it will have all the tasks for it listed. 27:07 Review Cycles The cyles toggle at the top of the pyramid is the last important element of the page to cover You must have at least weekly and monthly reviews to make the system work. At the end of the week (Fri-Sun) you will do your reviews This process can be done quickly (under a half-hour). You check the projects, goal outcomes, pillars, and guiding principles also other things that need to be done on a weekly basis like pay bills, clean downloads folder, etc. There will be videos covering these in more depth. In the process of quarterly and annual reviews is assigning fields that you can track over time. There is no redundancy between the weekly, monthly, etc. reviews; they are unique processes. 31:06 Outro

First of all, great videos with profound knowledge and wisdom. Thank you very much for sharing. I really learned a lot and am building a similar life OS with Notion for myself. For this episode, I find the “Value Goal” and “Goal Outcome” concepts are very similar to OKR,. O stands for Objective, which is essentially the “Value Goal”, and KR stands for Key Results, which is “Goal Outcome”. The OKR management system is very popular among tech companies, and your Notion system just nailed it in linking the tasks/projects with OKR. That’s great!

I started with the Second Brain template then found your channel. Now I'm slowly pivoting to your system. I'm not a fan of Goals though. After reading James Clear Atomic Habits I'm a strong believer that it's much better to focus on Systems. The Problems with Goals = Winners and Losers have the same goals, Achieving a goal is only a momentary change, Goals Restrict your Happiness, Goals are at odds with long-term progress. Goals can provide direction and even push you forward in the short-term, but eventually a well-designed system will always win. Having a system is what matters. Committing to the process is what makes the difference.
@augustbradley2 жыл бұрын
That's a common mistake and misconception. It is not Goals vs Systems, it is both - they enhance and complement each other. Obviously, I massively advocate for systems, this entire thing is a system. But a system without clear direction is a waste. It is better to inefficiently work in the right direction than to efficiently work in the wrong direction. And GOALS are the compass, they set the direction. The goals can change at any time, they adjust as you do, but thoughtful reflection and setting of goals have you and your system driving in the right direction. A compass is super valuable.

I've been looking at software to track OKR's (Objectives and Key Results) as well as Project and Task Management software and frustrated they are completely separate in virtually every other tool. I'm glad I randomly stumbled into your videos, they are gold :) Unless I'm misunderstanding, the OKR model would map Objective as your Value Goal (aspirational qualitative goals) and the Key Results as your Goal Outcomes (measurable results which are ways you will measure whether or not you will move the objective forward). The PPV pyramid mapping lowest level tasks to highest level priorities is great. I hope at some point you will get more into how to use your system (and Notion) in a Team framework.

Fantastic Larry! Thanks for the feedback here. It's funny, I'd heard of OKR but didn't know how it worked. When I did read about it more fully, I was surprised to find that it mapped pretty much exactly to my Value Goals and Goal Outcomes as you described. So I guess I've been a fan of OKR for longer than I realized. Though I prefer my titling over OKR. Will have more on the PPV system coming up, and great suggestion on covering teams usage more fully -- I've been doing a lot of that with clients so much to discuss there. @augustbradley4 жыл бұрын
Fantastic Carlisia! Well done 🙂. The two operate similarly, but Goal Outcomes are higher level than Projects. Projects are designed to move you toward the Goal Outcomes, you could have several Projects needed to get you all the way to the goal outcomes (or could be just 1). Projects are an undertaking (what you are actually doing/executing), Goal Outcomes are, well, an outcome -- a measurable end result. I just recorded a video on each that will come out this week, that should help clarify.

Hi August, again such an inspiring video! I've been following you since almost the beginning of your series and am so impressed with your concise and insightful style of teaching! The way you pack so much information into just a few sentences. I really concentrate on each of your sentences and rewatch videos often 2-3 times in order to understand all of it (but also English is not my first language). Can't wait for the next videos! You are truly among my favorite KZbin channels :D One question though: at 07:06 you mention resources for figuring out your purpose/identity/who you want to become. I can't find them in the shownotes. Could you kindly point us to where to find the resources you meant? Thank you!

Hi August -- loving your content on this channel! QQ - What are you doing with the "Milestones" toggle here?
@augustbradley4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Keenan! I made a slight mistake and forgot to come back to that in the video.

August, I'm trying to find some material for setting my guiding principles but can't find any links in the description. You mention that you will share some links to set us on the right path - have I missed something?
@mikethelma4 жыл бұрын
Hi August! I'm still binge watching these. Whew! The trouble is that as I work through these and put my own data in it grows exponentially and I'm underwater before I understand the point of what I'm working on. I really should have started with a "toy" system ... but then that has problems of its own. In any case ... Thanks for doing this. It is obvious that it has taken mountains of work to put it out. (I love the timing marks and especially the last one "Outro" ROTFLMAO ;-) What would be helpful is some kind of document listing tables and which fields link to which others. Yeah, I get that the templates don't carry links to tables with them, but a simple text file description might get past that. Maybe it will help if I try to draw my own as I work through these tables. Of course, I'll most likely need a new eye glass prescription if I do. I find myself stopping the video and holding up a magnifying glass to the screen to see the field names you are referring to. (Ah, first world problems. ;-) See you in the next video.

Hi August! I've recreated the Alignment Zone and it has been SO effective! However, I am struggling with understanding how to incorporate and delineate between Goal Outcomes and Projects, and how to relate them back to Value Goals. Could I walk you through a specific example for guidance? Value Goal: Become an Effective Teacher Goal Outcome(s): Develop firm understanding of key concepts; become a good orator; provide clear/organized expectations Project(s): The different courses that I am teaching The projects tie better to the Value Goal. If each project is a course I'm teaching, then they would incorporate and include ALL of the goal outcomes which seems redundant. However, some goal outcomes may have action items that are outside of a project (and in addition to). e.g., I might aggregate student survey feedback which won't tie back to a project, but it does root back to a goal outcome. Does that make sense? Am I doing this right, or is there a gap in my understanding? Sorry for the long comment! To help visualize, here's my expectation vs reality chart: imgur.com/a/p7ZbPnI
@augustbradley4 жыл бұрын
Some Goal Outcomes are advanced by Habits & Routines, rather than Projects -- but most are advanced through projects. The Goal Outcome in you rt example is not a Goal Outcome, it's not quantifiable and measurable, not clear when it is finished. That;s more a definition or explanation of your Value Goal. Hope that helps!

Thanks Tejas! Means a lot to me to hear this. Very happy that it's been valuable to you. Lots more to come! The Alignment Zone is many different embedded databases, several or which already exist in the Action Zone and/or in the Pipelines Folder. Templates don't allow links to external databases, so all the links to the other databases and their relations would break. So need to build this one yourself, but it's easy to do.
