This is how I use Notion to store notes and resources with more intention, instead of digital hoarding. Give every resource a "job."

I'm quite organized and chaotic at the same time and I always struggle with what to do with new information, but this video gave me some really good ideas thanks! And since there are a lot of people who have great ideas it's impossible for me to follow everyone, but I appreciate how good you summarize all those ideas!

This was super useful - I'm trying to implement the P.A.R.A method whilst being pretty new to Notion. Really interesting to see how you organise your resources / notes - I'm definitely going to implement some of the ways that you do it :)

Marie, I see you have a "Reference" DB in the Resources section which you didn't talk about in the video. Can you elaborate on what "Reference" is used for and how it relates to Notes, Reading + Listening...etc On the wait list to hear about your new course, can't wait!

This was brilliant! I love how you breaked down, that collecting information isn't enough. You want to summarize, what you've learned and how you will implement it in your biz. Thanks for sharing! Do you know Chris Do from TheFutur?

I do, yes, why?
@codinginflow
@codinginflow 4 жыл бұрын
I do something similar. But instead of making entries for each resource and then summarizing it, I make an entry only for the specific thing I learned and then note the source where I have it from (which can also be "personal experience"). Because usually I find 90% of an article not that interesting and there's only 1 or 2 nuggets that I want to remember.
@daveojeda

Really like what you are saying here! I too wanted a way to take the multiple ideas I get from a book, Tweet, article..etc and store those ideas (which is like you said only a small subset of the content that contained these ideas but the most important take-aways). Then as I work on different project easily pull ONLY those nuggets of info when I need them. entries > the resource pulled from Can you share any thoughts on how you have done this?
@codinginflow
@codinginflow 4 жыл бұрын
@@daveojeda My setup is pretty simple: I have a database called "Key Ideas" with columns for the name/description of the idea, 1 or more categories, and the source (which book/podcast/..., what page/position). In the entry, I then make some short and concise notes about this idea. I think that's better than writing lengthy summaries that you will probably never read again. I then surface this database in different places in Notion filtered by category. Particularly the last sentence is what makes it so cool.
@daveojeda
@daveojeda 4 жыл бұрын
@@codinginflow Thanks for the fast reply! New to Notion so wondering how good the Notion search is when trying to dive back into all these notes to surface the ones relevant to your project or task? As you know the hardest part is pulling in the correct notes when you REALLY need them.
@codinginflow
@codinginflow 4 жыл бұрын
@@daveojeda I use the search regularly and I didn't really run into any problems. But its probably a good idea to tag them by categories so you can apply different filters

Now, the thing with returning to see a video again (and again) is that you start seeing more details and, like in this case, stealing things the presenters are showing. So thanks a lot for the Benjamin Hardy stuff from your "Reading".. database, interesting stuff....

Your creation of notes remind me of Ryan Holiday's idea of commonplace book. Just a question on organisation though. Do you create a page under Notes for each idea you find, or for each piece of media (or resource) you consume?

And still some people say they don't like Notion because it "doesn't have tags." Being able to set up a system like this blows Evernote out of the water. Thanks for sharing!

I really love your setup, but the more I watch your videos the more that I realize that all these database relations in Notion are attempts to implement [[backlinking]] from Roam and Obsidian into Notion. The databases are pretty much acting as index nodes and the database format is necessary to backlink pages to each other through relations. It's very cool how you've done it, and the database structure with specially typed fields such as dates and multi-select also help with visualization compared to Roam and Obsidian. Wonder if/how your setup is going to change now that Notion implemented backlinking.

Are these "tags" tied into your master tag database concept? I am working on execution of a "master categorizer" that holds all my master tags, collaborators, focuses, topics, and priorities and trying to get everything tied in. I find it beneficial to be tied into a master list but also in certain circumstances and views to be tied to the databases own table of tags.

I've since added a master tags database - i have a recent video on that, so now I am doing that as a convention!

Hi, I'm wondering why don't you make a master database for the whole Resources, just like the master task database, then separate Studies and Notes with Multi-select property? Any reason or consideration?

Hey - i was pretty sure I talked about it in the video, but essentially I wasn't sure if i trusted Notion's database capacity and was worried about 1 big database becoming unruly. I am always adapting my workspace though, so you never know ;)

Ramba Zamba generally speaking, notes are my creation, whereas reading and listening is others creations, and if I find I have many thoughts and notes about something I’m reading, I’ll create my own notes and reference the original reading.

Tim Whalen Music I felt that way too - I tried it then left it for a year and came back to it. I promise it’s worth the learning curve... their documentation is amazing. Don’t try to do everything all at once - start with only one use case, and build over time.
