Something I learned some time ago most church bells around the world such as these lovely ones at Notre Dame ring by increasing the swing until the clapper strikes the bell mouth . In England they start with the bells mouth pointing up and the clapper already laying to one side so soon as the motion begins it will strike on the first swing hence the ability to play multiple bells in tempo as various tunes ( Campanology )

Patrick3183, Because I was raised in a Catholic household. And God says to love our neighbor. Our neighbor isn’t just Billy Joe down the street- they are everyone who lives and breathes; including the atheists. Some of my closest friends are actually atheists, actually. I don’t push the religion I was raised on onto them, and they don’t push their lack-of onto me. And Lydia Bergeron, that’s amazing to hear! I am thrilled that the Notre Dame is going to be repaired as well! It has always been an architectural beauty in my eyes, and with how much it is cared for, I look forward to the day the repairs are finished and the cathedral stands tall again! 💕💕

The new bell from Eijsbouts, yes quote impressive in sound, is nevertheless an industrial bell, typically cast too thick, and then corrected electronically with a shaving instrument to reach its corrected harmonics. Like all other bells from Eijsbouts, the old art of designing a bell, with modern tricks, this bell is an insult to the traditional manner of creating a pure and exact bell. Just ask any certified bell expert and he will tell you the same thing.

Like all gothic cathedrals in Europe, Notre Dame, Cologne, York Minster, West Minster Abbey, St Pauls have all come through disaster and devastation and Notre Dame will come through it also, York Minster was the last great cathedral to be devistated by fire in 1984 and it has been repaired and it it back to its glory, The fantastic bells from Notre Dame will ring again even better. My work brings me to Paris, a few times every month, and I have listened to the bells ringing from the cathedral and there sonorous depth is hypnotising, What I can say, when York Minster was repaired after the fire the restoration was flawless, You will be impressed with how they will rebuild Notre Dame, It will not involve a forest of trees to rebuild the roof either and it will not take a decade, What impressed me Christ was looking after the Cathedral during the fire, as I have seen the pictures and I have seen the Cross of Christ shining at the Altre with no damage so that is a sign it was been protected also

Put the old bells in a museum, or burn them, that is what you do to holy objects with no use. But do not replace them, Old Sigmusund in Krakow is still up there for about 400 years, but these bells are here for c. 700 years. Hmm... I just do not get it these days with replacing bells.

my home town of spokane did the shittest thing. we have a beautiful clock tower in a beautiful park downtown, riverfront park, and when they decided that repairing the bell mechanism was too much work, they replaced them with speakers that play tunes, it sounds awful. Its like a corrupted midi trying to play a xylophone. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/32/Spokane_Riverfront_Park_20061014.jpg heres a pic of the park and tower, when the bells go off it really takes away from the park i think
