Would 2D from North be a transfer to hearts, thereby having the weak hand on show in dummy?

You need five plus hearts to transfer

If you had the agreement with partner that transfers apply in this situation then yes. But you’d need that agreement and it’s a little unusual here. Suppose North had a few diamonds and just wanted to return to opener’s suit. Gets messy!

With a few diamonds, wouldn’t North be happy to leave it in 1NT because 7 tricks in 1NT scores the same as 8 tricks in 2D and the NT contract will score better if overtricks come into play?
