Many thanks for sharing, and the memories FredFlix: The World We Knew! Incidentally during this exact week which I think it was 17 NOV 1970 I met the Jackson Five at LAX in the wee early hours of the morning, and they had their Civies on without any body guards. They were catching a flight to Gary and I was headed elsewhere. They had a B-ball & we tossed it around. Moreover, go figure, today 08 MAR 2018 (43 years ago) their is a US Military ship with approx., 6500 personal docked over in the Nam!

Thanks again for sharing your memories with us. 1970 was quite a year us folks in Huntington WV. One of the Marshall U football players, David Griffith, and his wife Nancy, lived next door to my grandparents. I was visiting & that evening (Nov. 14) my grandma & I were watching a movie when they interrupted it with news of the plane crash. She was devastated, especially since Nancy (who was pregnant) had been among the folks who flew out with the team. Fortunately, she’d opted to visit her family in the area and didn’t take the flight back. It took about 3-4 days for us to learn that she was okay.

Truth to tell, Cowboy, she was gone a month, not a week. But I didn't want the video to be called "A Month in the Life," so I used artistic license. As for things working out, yes and no. Though I show mostly good moments in my videos, we were a dysfunctional family.
@Cowboy19596 жыл бұрын
What family wasn't dysfunctional in the post-war era, especially the '60s and '70s? Those were two really dysfunctional decades, and the "Leave It To Beaver" model just didn't exist in reality. Looking back now, I'm sure you have been able to put everything into perspective, as did your fellow family members over time. The fact that you can report on it in such a funny and entertaining way almost 50 years later is a testament to that.

My brother was 22 in 1970; he had been able to escape the draft, (though I don't remember how). I was only 14 but I knew I wouldn't have to worry about an eventual call-up because I was a type-1 diabetic. (I got my notice a few years later... I just tossed it in the waste basket.) I did run away from home a few times during my adolescent years. I was a bit mentally off the blankets... for various reasons. The first time, the cops got to me pretty quickly. The second time, (in 1973) I made it to New York (I'm originally from Philadelphia). I had hoped to make it like Bob Dylan (after reading the Scaduto biography). However, things had changed mightily from when the D had landed there in the early '60s. I only lasted a week... (I did see THE Charlie Mingus playing in a dilapidated bar!) With money rapidly dwindling I had to come back home... though I did get to perform, along with many others, in Washington Square!

It was the early '80's and I had just completed my master's degree, thinking what I was going to do next. My Dad and I went to auctions and yard sales because we would go the flea market on Sundays. We would load up his 1975 Chrysler station wagon and set out. Man, if I could only do it one more time. Anyways, we'd get home about 3:00, I would make vodka martinis, (my Dad always used to call them "schnappses"), my Mom sometimes drank a half a screwdriver, and I would count our take for that day. It wasn't much. Mom would cook supper, pan fried sausages, fried potatoes and corn, or something like that. My Mom died in 1982, and it was devastating. It turned our world upside down. My Dad and I turned to alcohol, and we both ended up to be alcoholics. It was tragic because, in his final days, my Dad could only drink room temperature vodka. He died of liver failure and esophagal cancer, in 1992 , just a few days after the anniversary of my Mom's death. I have been sober for 14 years now. But, that's not all! After I got sober, I was addicted to prescription drugs. Oh, I knew all the tricks. Different doctors, different pharmacies, different "ailments." I have been clean for six years. As they say, "There but for the grace of God, go I." Incidentally, I used to be San Michele.

In 1973 I had the same worry about being drafted for the Vietnam war, too. Not long after, they pulled the plug on the war, the draft ended, and I legally burned my draft card. Apollo 13 was thought of as the most successful failure of the space program (there would be worse to come). My uncle drove the same make and model van. Coincidentally, my sister also ran away from home after she graduated from high school. She shacked up with some guy and his friend and went to California. She thought he loved her. However, she came back alone a few days later when she overheard them plotting to steal her money and dump her at the airport. I thought my sister had more brains than that! It seems not. She was just not a very good judge of character. A few years later my sister married some clod who she knew was an alcoholic before she married him. Surprise! He abused her, couldn't keep a job, arrested multiple times for DUI, etc. She eventually divorced him. Some people just never learn.
