Ahh NOVA, a project I'll always love, even with its frayed and unkempt edges. I whole-heartedly agree that its the worst NOVA of the lot, but I like that it is raw and approachable, showing other aspiring mappers that everyone has to start somewhere. It was also cool having the project helmed, playtested, and edited entirely by newbies, as it demonstrates how erratic quality control can be when nobody knows what the hell they're doing. We received (and accepted) the EvilNed maps in bulk when he dropped them on us, and we didn't say no to joe because *technically* he was a newbie, and E1 and E2 were overflowing with drab, unambitious techbases and yet we didn't bat an eye. It's the kind of stuff I wouldn't let fly as a community lead nowadays-and I'm glad this is still around to demonstrate why. I think playtesting Sewer City over and over was the decisive factor in limiting author contributions in NOVA 2 to 1-2 maps... and if I recall, before I took over for NOVA 2 it had like 3 joe maps in it! (I kept the best one in there to show people joe wasn't a completely lost cause.) A great review from start to finish Mt., was fun seeing maps I once knew like the back of my hand but haven't played in over half a decade. Lots of sharp and pithy comments that I couldn't help but smile at too (sorry joe). Was fun seeing how some of the maps you felt had tight provisions (MAP22 & MAP23) were those I had done extensive gameplay editing for; I guess I've always loathed an abundance of ammunition. Happy to see you enjoyed Exuviae but I'm even happier to hear your complements for Megiddo! It's long, bulky, and ugly, but I concur that the big behemoth is the star of the show. It provides such a neat, compact snapshot into each mapper's philosophy, whether it be mouldy's penchant for chaos or kildeth's focus on place first, gameplay second. (Lastly, Getsu's map is indeed showcased in my Megiddo portion-there's a small circular room with 4 packs of cell near the start that's taken from the green armor tower in MAP02. It's definitely the hardest of all the references to spot... a better idea would've been to just repaste the triangle toilets into a secret area and call it a day)

Oh man it's been far too long since I've watched a Dean of Doom episode. Here I am finding a Nova episode 11 months late. I had a look through my personal notes & see that I made map 2 in a few hours on March 1, 2013. If I recall correctly the secret exterior battle was added several month's later near the release of the wad. Unfortunately I can really no longer remember any of my thoughts when designing the map, it was over 10 years ago after all. It's kinda crazy looking back to see how rapidly my mapping improved though, just think that just over 2 years after making this map I would be making map 5 of TNT: Revilution. Looking back at the wad as a whole I do have a big soft spot for it & this actually remains my favorite entry in the series. Playing through it reminds me of playing through those really oldschool wads like Evilution or Memento Mori.
@cannonball1990
@cannonball1990 2 жыл бұрын
Oh God….. I must commend you for playing through this. It certainly was rough around the edges. Map15 - This was the 4th map I ever made (Only two entries for Mayhem 2012 and one for DMP2012 came before this). I must have edited this several times during the development cycle and honestly was a bit of a mess. The only thing I am proud of is giving a fitting secret exit (Well the visual cue for the gem that is Map31). I actually remade this map back in 2018 for an 11 map episode called Demonic Deviation. Map18 - This was made much later in the develop cycle and as such is probably less clunky to play. Apparently I have a weird obsession with making power plant themed maps (Yet I work for a water company). The good thing I can say about this wad is that many of the mappers grew beyond this point, well except Dobu and Cyriak, they were always awesome.

@@MtPain27 cheers, I guess in a way it did show how successful the project was because I was certainly a better mapper after this process (Though that involved a lot of harsh (but needed) criticism from other sources at the time). I see the mention of a Nova 4 in a couple of comments. I am not overly sure it will happen, the discord era has changed things a lot, especially with servers that help newbies like the James Paddock’s entryway server etc. still if it did happen then I would love to play test and give others a leg up, I regret not being there for most of the Nova 3 project timeline. I am glad you enjoyed some of the quirkier levels too, maps 22 and 23 were ones that impressed me for being a bit left field.

Poor ol’ Joe! His older maps are rough as guts - actually, a lot rougher than that even - but in recent times he’s become far better. His Jamal Jones map submission was among my favourites, he’s definitely the most improved mapper I know of, and I can relate to his journey of starting out making garbage, but also slowly but surely improving year after year. This looks like an excellent wad even despite its flaws.. and hell, those “flaws” honestly look pretty damn good to me at times. Maybe it’s just nostalgia for earlier times in mapping culture, but a lot of this goes against the grain in a good way, based on this video. Also, that map30 is definitely something special.. Thanks for the great episode and for putting this wad on my radar, MtPain! (Also, nice posters 😃)

The nice thing about making MAP11 for this project was definitely that I felt no pressure to be “Good”, in the sense that I often apply unnecessary expectation to myself with this unpaid hobby, undertaken for fun. I didn’t want to stand out, or do anything flashy, and I definitely wanted that Soul Calibur II MIDI, even if it is a bit… strident. I’m very happy with my middling grade 😁 Long live MtPain27!

Heya Phobus! See, as the Dean himself said, Nova is delightfully uninhibited. Uncompromised mapping just for fun and practice is some of the best artistic expression for the mapper him/herself. (On an unrelated note, Godforsaken Hole, your map for Cchest3, pairs up _exceptionally well_ with "Waves of Intrigue" from Eviternity's map22. Same energy as your pick of "Waiting For Romero To Play", but fresher. Just thought you'd like to know.)

Hey MtPain27. I hope you are doing well. Thank you for doing a review on this wad. I've not yet played the Nova series, and you've convinced me to give it a try. :) If I may, I have a very, very selfish request, which you can choose to ignore if it doesn't fit the rules for your DoD series. The rest of this comment is gonna be pretty long. I sincerely apologize in advance for that. After going through all the reviews you've done on your channel so far, I've had a thought in my mind, about the challenge wads and the difficulty settings. Of late, I'm seeing mappers put in more efforts towards implementing difficulty settings. I've seen Nirvana985 and Mr.Zzul talk about it here and there, mentioning how much extra care and attention they put towards the HMP difficulty so that it was more enjoyable and also more accessible to the community. Ribbiks is also known for implementing difficulty settings in most if not all of his works. With that in mind, and with your reviews of HR2 and the memento moris fresh in my mind, if possible, could you try reviewing some of the wads but in HMP difficulty? I feel, wads like Fractured Worlds, Sunlust, the Combat Shock series, the Stardate series etc. become far more enjoyable to play when played on lower difficulties. I've played Sunlust on HMP and on UV, and I've also experimented by playing some maps on ITYTD, and I have found even maps like sunlust map29 to be quite a lot of fun. Since your channel is growing so rapidly and one of your goals with the DoD series is to "spread the joy of Doom", I think if you were to review a wad in HMP, it would reach out even to those players who would otherwise just skip on some majestic wads just because they won't play on anything other than UV. After all, there is a sort of mindset in the community where a player must only play on UV. If they can't beat it on UV, they drop the wad and criticize the mapper. I think that's unfair, especially when mappers actually did consider the wide variety in skills in the playerbase and took their time in carefully making HMP and other difficulties more balanced. You had, once upon a time, posted a video about being a save scummer, and, imo, that was a very good, impactful video. It's okay to savescum, and, a lot of people often forget this. Along similar lines, encouraging players to play on lower difficulties would help the general Doom player appreciate the map more. (e.g. I observed a lot more things in the Sunlust maps on HMP than I did on UV.) Your videos have a big outreach (if this is the right word). Many in this community look up to you. I feel, just like in the save scum video, if you were to post a video about Doom difficulty, it may have a positive impact on most of your viewers. Who knows, people may even load up Sunder on no monsters and just stroll through the brilliance of Gazebo's masterpieces. Ofc, I do not mean to imply that players can't play on UV. They certainly can if they wish to. But I am more hoping that players prefer to do their first/blind playthroughs of Ribbiks/Nirvana/Bemused maps on HMP rather than on UV, otherwise they are very unlikely to play it on their own and will probably not think highly of their works. If they enjoy the maps on HMP, that's good, they can then decide to play on UV. If UV turns out to be a frustrating, unenjoyable experience, at least they had a good first impression of the wad on HMP. And, first impressions are last impressions, as they often say. But anyway. I will stop this rant now. Thank you for reading all this, if you do choose to read all this. Hope you have a nice day. (I've also seen your review of BTSX E2. I may or may not leave a comment there. xD )

A peek into the beginnings of many mappers (and also a peek into the MtPain cinematic universe?). This episode is really pushing me to dive back into Doom Builder. I had started working on some of my own maps, but got frustrated with my "lack of progress" and didn't get anything to a "playable" state. This WAD and episode are inspiring in a way and I look forward to seeing the rest of Nova's offerings. Footnote: I'm reminded of a more recent novice-focused mapping project called "RAMP" (Rabbit's All-comers Mapping Project). It's less restricted that Nova is, allowing for full use of GZDoom-isms and UDMF, but it's also much larger in scale with the first RAMP having a colossal 200 maps and the following having 120. That combined with Nova shows that everyone can make a Doom map. If you've ever thought about making a map, do it. See what you can come up with. And as MtPain said about Getsu Fune's maps, make maps that you love, even if they don't appeal to others.

Great stuff Dean, really fun wad here. I find newbie maps that are solid overall a Doom guilty pleasure heh. We all gotta start somewhere and it's really neat seeing how others got going. I haven't made it all the way through the video yet but I'm surprised to see Primevil! I know him only as a composer, not as a mapper. I've worked with him in Parallel Doomensions, a Quake partial conversion for Boom that's still in development. He did the soundtrack along with a few others, nice dude. Worked with Jaws as playtester on TNT Forever (TNT Convultion for those that know that joke name), really great wad - I look forward to seeing it on the show some time. Been really fun working with Kyka (a Doomworld oldhead and very cool guy) in the project, he's mostly who I give input to. Jaws is more of the overseer. MrJoshmon is also an oldhead on Doomworld, very nice guy. No clue there guys got their start in mapping like this. Oh and I like the Hendrix and Zappa posters in the class room now - Doomkid should be appeased! Another edit - wow did you go off on Joe Ilya lmao. Working with Obsidian and all the lovely folks of the Abyssal Speedmapping Sessions, I've heard some stories about this guy. Justice for Gene Bird. He's actually a pretty cool guy (still on Doomworld) and even though Joe has some neat maps I'd take ol Searcher over him, especially with CC1 Map07 and Map28 heh.

I'm usually not a fan of GZDoom wads, but this one plays like a good vanilla wad with room-over-room added on top. The maps are non-linear, immersive, and honestly, the sense of wonder you feel while exploring them rivals Lost Civilization. I am not good with puzzles and I honestly had a very annoying time my first playthrough, and my twitch chat was definitely getting bored and annoyed too, but discovering the secret path was an incredible experience. The midi and the visuals work together so well too, is incredible vanilla textures could produce such a striking world. I was really mad the reward was that map 32 but oh well haha Nova is not perfect, it was definitely rough around the edges but I think it's safe to say that all mappers did not lack creativity. It's awesome to see the starting work of many legendary mappers. Can't wait for the Nova 3 episode!

Was excited to see you take your eye to some perennial mappers' origin stories here. I think one of my favorite facets of the show is when a mapper returns a few times (or more than a few) and you get a more thorough look at how their mapping identity coalesced. And besides, what aspirant doesn't like seeing their creative heroes in a more approachable, reachable light?

I often keep your videos on as background noise while I do stuff, i find your voice relaxing. On this rewatch it finally hit me on WHY you where showing the delinquent this wad in the intro, it was a way of saying "If you don't want to play DOOM you can make maps for it." which makes sense looking back at the jokewad he sent you. The opening maps are quite pretty and aptmospheric, 3D glasses is a cool idea and would fit perfectly in the 31 slot, him clearly knowing enough about DOOMs balance to know how to screw the player over, I could go on! (I know the Delinquent of DOOM is a fake character shut up) My recommendation would be instead to give him an assignment to make a DOOM wad. Assign him a few random limits, a deadline, and a sourceport and send him on his way!

Have watched every Dean of Doom video since you started the series and played Doom since 94. Can you please cover REVOLUTIONS! And some of the other Bethesda's add-on since they're so available on Console's bow. I have had a blast with Revolutions how they go for more realistic environments instead of crazy battles (though some levels can have some sinister traps). So far it has easily made my top 5 Mega Wad list of all time story driven not too hard not too easy plenty to look at ty

I'm sure you've gotten comments on this, but I'd love to see you cover My House on an episode. That introduced me to doom wads in general. I had no idea the game had such a creative modding community, and seeing My House made me want to see what other mods were like. I'd also like to see Grove and "The thing you can't defeat" on future episodes but I'm sure that will come eventually. I've only scratched the surface of the Dean of Doom episodes and I'm looking forward to binging the series.

Just finished this WAD myself, thanks to this video. Couple things I noticed: 1. Those triangle "sinks" in Map02 are (I think) supposed to be urinals, since the other bathroom doesn't have any. Though, honestly, they look even less like urinals 2. In Map 27, I believe the back linedef of the blue door doesn't require the blue key, so if the mastermind brushes up against it, the door opens prematurely

Wonderful video! Its nice to see Nova continued as a series even after a bit of a rocky start. Btw, if you ever do another Sawed Off Wads video, there's a map you MUST check out. It's by my good friend Toxie Rocks. It is titled "The Fantastic Love Adventure of Lt. Feel Good", and is the last map in the zdoom set of the Doomworld 2014 Mega Project. The map is an experience like no other, and was even praised to high heavens by none other than Jimmy Paddock. :)

I haven't played this one, but it looks oddly charming and quirky. Even the ones that look a little rough around the edges have some qualities to them that make them unique. It's always interesting to see how mappers just start out. Joe-Ilya has definitely come a long way from this, though his maps I've played lately (usually as part of a DBP) still have this uniqueness to them. And of course Dobu would be one of those mappers who immediately made genius maps. Makes sense. And that MIDI for map 29 really makes the map feel unsettling.

I checked out Nova 1 a while back and while it did fail to hook me, I did decide to idclev to map31. Good god was that a cool experience, exploring it on its own with the melancholy track playing was nice, it had a sense of "dystopia" to it and the almost abandoned monolithic scale of the exuviate is a pretty memorable setting. The weird symbol puzzle was so cool especially the twist leading to the secret exit, and while the combat there was not my cup of tea, the atmosphere of the map was excellent. On a related note, I think you'd like Devil's Den from TNTR more now that you've grown more appreciate of dgm's style more. Anyways onto the video itself, I was unironically in awe of the thrashing you gave map21, never did I think you'd end up complimenting GB or HR2 in the exact same level, straight up harsh. In retrospective, it makes the same author's submission to NOVA2 a pretty cool redemption story. Also the ending punchline was pretty funny, although it opens quite a can of worms; is "MtPain27" (distinct from the youtube creator MtPain27) a fraud, some of kind of supernatural entity really into DOOM levels, why does he have access to an entire empty school, who is the "Delinquent of Doom", so many questions! Great video as always Professor!

That's so cool how the "Wait, I've been here before..." nightmare vibe of Teleportarium & Immaterium gets followed up by dobu gabu maru's contribution to Megiddo. I'm one of those weirdos who loves 33% of Doom 2 In Name Only enough to be able to endure the remaining 66%, mostly due to my fascination with stock texture use as a minimalist art form. So I am _definitely_ going to take a journey through this WAD.

Just wanna say that I too am a fellow weirdo, then, because I have a soft spot for D2INO. Some of the WAD is unplayable trash, but most of the good maps are REALLY good and completely justify its existence - mouldy's, cannonball's, and Tristan Clark's maps belong to the latter category of course. Would love for the Dean to play through and review that mapset!
@head_cannon1066
@head_cannon1066 Жыл бұрын
Oh, I dunno about that. I think the most entertaining episodes are the ones where the Dean is gushing about something that's captivated him, rather than the ones where he has to do an analysis of something flawed that falls short of its aspirations. kmxexii's ONEMANDOOM blog is quite good at finding positive examples of moments that are fun or interesting, even in the most dire WADs. But that's not the way that MtPain27's creative process works, and he's not able to force it to work that way. When something doesn't really grab him, it shows, and the script and voiceover performance just gets filled with resentment. I don't mind the choppy experience of playing through a community project with a jarring variety of tones, styles, & difficulties, but I find those kind of megawads to be a poor fit for this show's format. ...You're right about how cool those cannonball and mouldy levels are, though. It's really neat to see those two masters take on the Vanilla-Compatible format and make ambitious things within the restrictions as a creative challenge. Antroid's MAP29 is another adventure map that I would say _earns_ its extended running time, and his MAP04 sits comfortably alongside _bruce_'s preceding two levels as good examples of how to make the kind of modest, small-scale level that best excels in those early E1 mapslots. Finally, ProcessingControl's dungeon crawls full of tricks & traps are exactly my jam, so I really enjoyed solving the big arcane machine of MAP06, and further recommend his three maps in the previous year's Interception.

@@head_cannon1066 nah, I don’t agree. I personally don’t find that his reviews of less than stellar WADs detract from his whole body of work. While I don’t think the Dean would shower the WAD with glowing praise, his nuanced take on “mixed bag” community WADs are a breath of fresh air. I think they earn their place amongst his reviews of revered classics and personal favorites. Plus he seems like the type that subscribes to the notion that “the more Doom, the better” so i don’t think it would be a poor use of his time. Ultimately though, it’s up to what the man himself wants to play and review - it’ll be top notch, regardless. Also, I definitely echo your sentiments on Maps 6 and 29 - very unique pieces of work!

25:36 Well I guess we can put Pistol Panic and/or Technodrome on the list of maps joe is a fan of. (I already had devised Underhalls and early Scythe 1.) Which come to think of it, it's probably Pistol Panic he was a fan of, since half that map looks just like Underhalls! For my money, Pistol Panic is (perhaps fittingly both for joe and for the megawad it opens) easily my least favorite Map01 of any DooM II episode or megawad on this show. Oh and Whispers of Satan kinda bores me a bit but no, joe's work does NOT remind me of it. Footnote: On top of that, this map is associate with HR2 yet again, for half its title in that wad's Valedictorian. I liked this episode, there is a lot of quirky work here and a lot of odd selling points. Still looking forward to NOVA III more, but this was a good one. Many call the first NOVA a 'modern TNT' and after the consistently underdeveloped start, that seems a fair way of putting it. Indeed my thoughts of TNT, unaffacted by nostalgia, mirror yours of this wad (which I haven't actually played) once it gets past the dreary first quarter. It's also interesting to see returning mappers improve in NOVA II, which lacks that 'modern TNT' flavor and instead actually seems like a superior iteration of the Community Chest series, but is a better megawad all the same. mrthejoshmon, cannonball, and even joe ilya definitely show advancement in their solo work, and unarguably two of NOVA's best mappers also join forces to create that wad's Valedictorian with a third creating its conclusion. Too bad Megiddo II is robbed of that AWESOME midi of Silent Screams and dobu's equally awesome section that carried NOVA's final map so far...but oh well. As a final note, I find Map02: Smelling Faintly Of Roses of Finely Crafted Fetish Film to be an equally amazing puzzle to Iron Exuviae, although there isn't a secret alternative solution. But I wanted to shout that map out, Ribbiks had some really good puzzle ideas in 2019 to join among the likes of what dobu had already been doing for six years.

In all seriousness and in a separate comment, though, the idea of picking up Slade and Doom Builder and getting to work on trying to make something has crossed my mind quite a few times. I don't necessarily know if making vanilla compatible maps would be my thing though, given this thought was first implanted by wanting to make maps for SRB2Kart more than it was for making challenges amongst titans like Skillsaw who have boiled Doom combat down to a science. What would be worth making that I as a mapper could bring to the table, and would it even be something I could complete given that even in my other artistic endeavors, I struggle to finish my work in what is most likely an ADHD-ridden lethargy. Then I see cool community projects like what the Doomer Boards have going on or the Nova series or Not Even Remotely Fair and it's clear there's still so much TO create. If nothing else, taking the MtPain27 intro to Doom course may actually instill the language of doom mapping unto me in some capacity, and maybe I do get that hit of lightning to the brain and go out thereand do something cool with IDTech1.
